I've never really cared for real time strategy games, but absolutely adored the Advance Wars games on the GBA and DS, so, as the title suggests, anything similar for the PC?

What a great game. All the turn based games on the PC feature far too much Economics.

The closest I can think of is Galactic Civ.

Battle Isle series...little bit difficult to find...the first couple are DOS (use with DOSBox) and then there's a tactical turn-based shooter (Incubation...nothing like Advanced Wars) and then the final installment (Andosian War) is supposed to be something like the first three, but I never played it...don't know...

Same type of gameplay as Advanced Wars with lots more graphics and a little less cutesy interludes...

Tower Defense? There is lots of strategy for dummies on the internet. Armorgames.com has a lot of simple strategy games that can actually be pretty fun for the 30-120 mins they take to beat.

Civ IV is similar to Advance Wars the same way getting a college degree in physics is similar to winning the 6th grade science fair. ;)

lol although Civ IV is very complicated compared to Advance Wars, it is similar in style in a way. But most TBS are pretty complicated aren't they?

You could always emulate the Gameboy Advance and Nintendo DS on your PC. I have spent many hours playing Advance Wars 1/2 on my laptop.

If you own the games themselves in physical cartridge format, then you should have no legal issues emulating them on your PC. I believe it is only illegal if you do not own the games.

Yeah, Advance Wars was pretty much a TBS dumbed down for the console/casual market.

Still illegal. The license you buy in to is for the copy you buy for one, and in order to be able to install the emu version, it has pretty much had to have been hacked at one point, which means you are breaking the DMCA. Ain't unfettered capatlism grand?

I could've reading somewhere that you could rip your own ROM/BIOS/whatever and it wouldn't be illegal as long as it was your own copy.

So while technically it's illegal to download and install a ripped ROM, as long as you have your own, physical, copy it's not since you could always say you had just taken it from your own cartridge.

Incorrect. Regardless of licensing, the DMCA made it illegal to design, distribute, or benefit from the circumvention of any security technologies. So even if you own a copy, if the emu copy you have required security to be circumvented at any way, it's illegal to use it no matter what. And if we keep on this topic, this thread will be closed.

So, OP, have you found any games that are looking good?

Well, this threads not gonna last for very long, now that the R word has been used.

I'll just suggest that OP has a look at Fire Emblem as well (6, 7, 8), as it uses a very similar battle mechanism (well, it is made by the same dev). Also, IMHO, it is one of the best series I have ever played.

Yeah, played Fire Emblem. Fun, but not as fun as AW. One thing I love about AW is the simplicity; I can take it with me to meetings, and others can immediately take to it without too much of a learning curve. Yet, still, the best strategy reigned supreme.

I really don't appreciate the condescending remarks just because it isn't as complicated as some other games.

Emulation is the way to go, these games are more predominate on older handhelds.

Yes its legal to dump your own game for backup, and its legal to use an emulator as long as you dumped your own system bios.

Well if you're looking towards the GBA, you might enjoy Final Fantasy Tactics/Ogre Battle Tactics which are in a similar, fantasy based. On PC there is the Heroes of Might and Magic series, the last of which (V) came out a few years ago.
Turn based strategy has been more prevelant on consoles as it was easier to pull off and required less juice and quick control than realtime, which the PC was better for.

Advance Wars was a pretty awesome game though, as was 2, never played AW DS though.

I'd say the Civ IV is quite the same. A little harder but that's just good about it.

Galactic Civ is a bit less complicated compared to Civ IV I think. You could start with that if you wanted

Gal Civ is a great game, but it still has a big tech tree and econ to worry about. I honestly think that webgames are your best bet on PC. There was one I used to play a lot... unfortunately, I forget the name now. :/
