Ive tried many times to get my HD5650 to the newest drivers, but it refuses to go beyond 8.712.

Update: Im now trying to install 10.10 and yet again im stuck on the previous driver. Ive tried the .cfg edit and it still refuses to install. What can i do?

What laptop do you own, it might be locked down by your manufacturer.

if the newest mobility drivers from ATI do not install, it is because your OEM has requested that ATI not release driver updates for their machines. If you're lucky, other Toshiba owners have figured out how to bypass this and install the latest drivers anyway. Go take a peak in the NBR Toshiba forums and see if there's anything you can glean from that community.

Hmm thanks for the info, ive been trying for ages but no one else on the internet seems to have the same problem.

You got any links to other people saying their manufacturers have locked their drivers?

have you tried the workaround trick?
download the latest official from support.amd.com

download the option1 all in one package

when it's downloaded try to run the install and it will fail
find a file called installmanager.cfg and open it up in wordpad

(for me it was in C:\ATI\Support\10-8_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc\Config\InstallManager.cfg)

there should be a line which says "WorkaroundInstall=false" change it to true

try the setup.exe file in the main folder (C:\ATI\Support\10-8_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc\Setup.exe)

it should now install the latest driver version without issues.

This is pulled from a Tom's Hardware article in February when the full fledge support for ATI mobility launched:

ATI Catalyst Mobility: Hallelujah, right? For a while now, Nvidia has offered direct updates for its mobile hardware. Now that ATI has the only DirectX 11-compliant notebook-capable GPUs, it was only a matter of time before enthusiasts buying Mobility Radeon-based laptops started raising hell over the slow process most OEMs use in validating new driver updates. Starting with Catalyst 10.3, ATI says it’ll offer support for all Mobility GPUs, so long as the system builder doesn’t opt out of support. Currently, Sony, Toshiba, and Fujitsu are asking that their products not be updated by the new drivers.

As you can see, Toshiba opts out.

You can always try Extreme G's mobility drivers 10.5 .... they are the most stable highest performing ATI drivers I ever tried also it has a geometry instancing function that gives + performance & the High Quality AF which gives superb quality graphics with minimal performance loss because you can avoid using AA

you will lose nothing by giving them a shot you can download them from tweakforce.com
