    MMO = Massive Multiplayer Online

The only real option is Guild Wars in my opinion

Massively multiplayer online is what MMO stands for.

Guild wars is the only one that comes to mind assuming you meant MMORPGs which are the only MMOs with monthly fees, pretty much.

Guild Wars is great! I bought it because it had no monthly fees. I have to say though that I had no prior experience with these types of games so I can't compare to anything. But I definately like Guild Wars!

I have Guild Wars, and WoW, and I couldn't play Guild Wars again after playing WoW, even at $15 a month, World of Warcraft is so much better than Guild Wars just because of the community and depth. Some people like Guild Wars alot though. To each his own I guess. Guild Wars is pretty though I must admit.

    That game is great
Another way to play MMo for free is either:
-play them at there open beta test, this test can be quick or very long, some game test nearly a year, average is 3 month or more
-Find some free game online, like some of this
    http://au.bugsgames.net/news/notice_list.asp?notice_code=1 break dance online
http://www.onrpg.com/ you can find more free MMO here
    http://www.silkroadonline.net/ very good MMORPG
http://www.blitz1941.com/Blitz.1941 real time tank battle online
and some very original is Gunbound, very original and fun and free
Welcome to gameonline (eventhough my connection suck big time)

I would recommend any blizzard game. Over the years Blizz has gotten many many dedicated fans and most of "us :)" play online. I would recommend Diablo 2. I understand most of these arn't the conventional MMO, but there are few RPG's that can beat the fast paced action and the great strategic value that Diablo 2 has to offer.

Neverwinter Nights from what I understand has a large fan base. Most of these people have created their own modules and host them online.

If you're into strategy try Starcraft one of the best strategy games I've ever played.

You could even try Warcraft 3 which has both strategy and rpg elements.

    BLIZZARD!

BTW, if you buy the battle chest for starcraft it will come with a WoW free trial. The free trial is only for 14 days. I suggest if you don't want to pay, DON'T EVEN INSTALL IT!

Once you play this game if you're an rpg fan you'll probly end up forking out the money.

I'd try Guild Wars (never played it myself), and like another poster mentioned, maybe neverwinter nights. it's not an mmo, but the online multiplayer is free, and extensive. as far as WoW... I was pretty underwhelmed when I played it. (just to, you know, be negative. ;)

I actually feel opposite, I quitted WoW and went for GW.. maybe I am WoW burnt out(been in WoW since beta) and in retail version. I have 6 lvl60 characters on 2 servers, 3 on Lothar(PVE server, Mage , priest, Warrior ) and 3 on Firetree(.ud rogue, orc hunter, orc warrior PVP server) Was the first mage to hit lvl60 on Lothar, and I had the MOST aoe dmg output on entire server.(purple every gear from all high lvl instances) Did everything possible in that game, every instance, even molten core and basically beat it. Oh did the boss out in Blasted land also! It got too time consuming... every instance run takes hours. I was basically helping the run for friends made in game and in real life. but that game after you play it out, it is not worth the time. I found myself just making silly amounts of golds thru auctions in game selling craft goods.( my account inactive right now but i have over 50,000 Gold on each server) It just got too tiring for me. So i started to look ingo this Guildwar ( I started in first guildwar, not the new Fraction version)

Guild war is really really good.
You can pick up and play anytime even if just can play short session. Go straight into arean and just PVP or test various builts. Since creeping/hunting are set in instances, you are not fighting for mobs or playing TAG the MOB against other players in open field in WoW. The way the weapons and armor stats in GW is way more balanced than in WOW. all my characters are really hard to kill off because each are so loaded with very top purple and blue gears in WoW.(was wearing high lvl PVP reward gears before I deactivate account) GW is a game of real team work and skills. you are not able to use all your skills anytime you want, so the character skill builts is very important in relation with other players in party.

Definitely give Guild war a try, the low lvl cap of guildwar and the focus of skilled play makes it a better game IMO.

BF2 is not MMO. It is free to play online, but it's not MMO. The most you can have in a game is 64 players, and you don't have a massive online presence that you can interact with, like in a real MMO.

Theres starwars galaxies, there was a free 30 day trial of it on gamespot at one point, I tried it but it was really had to get into because there were so many uber expirienced people out there, but the idea is really cool if you like the whole sci-fi scene

Currently Planetside, a MMOFPS, is free to download and play until march 2007. I'm playing it to keep from getting too bored over the summer.

Try LastChaos, Twelve Sky, or Shaiya at Aeria Games. All FREE. You can also Try Rohan, Free as well.
Not sure What type of MMORPG you're looking for. These are dungeon crawls with PVM and PVP. Crafting capabilities, private messaging, in game chat etc . . .
All are Xfire compatible as well. :)

Guild wars = best MMORPG i've ever played. Best story, best skill level . It realy rqeuires skill to be good in that game unlike every other stupid mmo.

But wait for Guild Wars 2 which is set to launch early 2009 with beta at the end of this year. It should be just about the best thing ever as far as MMORPGs go.

I bought just the game of the year edition and realized later I need eye of the north to store stuff in the hall of monuments for GW2. I don't know if its worth it. It'll cost me another 15 bucks.

Ok while trying to be helpful be warnned I will mention a pay per month mmo at the end :p

one fun kind mmo is gunzonline
sword of the new world is out
as well as archlord (which has some cool one of kind features)

Now someone mentioned starwars galaxies to which I have to post what I always do :p If you looking for a Sci-fi mmorpg, play eve-online, the largest mmorpg out on the market (none of that 5000 people per world ****, were talking 50,000 people on at a time, with over 250,000 players on one server). it cost 15$ a month but you don't have to buy it, and every expansion is free for the player. which come out every 6 months.

they recently renovated the graphics from
    Minimum System Requirements

Network: 56k modem or better Internet connection
Video: 32 MB 3D graphics card. GeForce 2 Series or greater, ATi Radeon 7200 or greater and Similar chips from other manufacturers
Drivers: DirectX® 9.0c (included) and latest video drivers
    to
    minimum:

CPU: Intel Pentium® IV 1.5 GHz or AMD XP 1500+ MHz
    RAM: 1024 MB or more
    HD space: 8.0 GB
Network: 56k modem or better Internet connection
Video: 128 MB Shader Model 3.0 Graphics cards such as GeForce 6 class card or higher, ATi X1300 or higher and Similar chips from other manufacturers
Drivers: DirectX® 9.0c (included) and latest video drivers

However you can play with either client the old or the new and still play in the same game world

with future expansion such as walkign in stations and ships, optional DX 10 graphics update, and planatary combat via teaming up with valve, eve is the mmorpg you want to get into if your looking for a good Sci-fi game

If you want to pay for an mmorpg and not play a sci-fi game play WoW it's polished beyond reason. Not many if any flaws minus the tiny game communities
