I'm sure, from what I've seen in the other threads, that somebody here is smart enough to tell me if I am wasting my life trying to get KOTOR II playable on my laptop. I have an HP ZV6000:
3500+
2 GB RAM
Xpress 200m (128in/128shared)
The game installs and starts, but the 1-2 fps I'm getting is brutal. Feel free to mock my stupidity as long as it comes with an answer. Trying to solve the problem before the restoration mod comes out.
Thank you.
Somebody told me that it is some OpenGL issue.

Welcome to the forum,

I would tell you its impossible
but you actaully have a very rare gpu, the x200 with dedicated graphics. Im really not sure. Im inclined to think you could run it
I ran kotor 2 on my old laptop which is a g4mx 420 32 mb. that is a geforce 2 with 32 mb dedicated. That should actually be the same thing you have so it should run -
Ouch, I guess that means no...its not really playable.
-
I've run KOTOR 2 on less than that and I've seen it run on a desktop Radeon x200. Try lowering the graphics settings as Kdawgca suggested.
-
Any idea why I can play Madden 07 on above average settings with no problems, but I am crippled by KOTOR II?
-
Could be a mobility x200 openGL issue. I had an X200 before in one of my notebooks, and it was useless at openGL games, even those that are far, far older then KOTOR II. Stuff like Quake II in OpenGL mode wouldn't even run great...

I found that there is quite a performance difference between KOTOR and KOTOR II. If you can't get II to run, you should at least be able to play the original.
-
Different games using different engines that are implemented differently, and have different features, and differ in how scalable they are, how well they perform on low-end computers, and how well they can take advantage of high-end computers, and so on.
It isn't really meaningful to compare two games and say "If I can run this, I ought to be able to run that". Not even if they seem to you to have equally good graphics. Wish it was that easy, but there's just too many unknown factors in between. -
I found both KOTOR and KOTOR 2 played perfectly on my old M9, ATI Mobility Radeon 9000. I thought my X1600 would be better at some points where the 9000 stuttered a bit, but it turns out it was the game and not the vid card and both performed identically, even at SXGA+ on the 9000. KOTOR 2 for me was identical to KOTOR in terms of performance. If you haven't played KOTOR though don't play 2...from a gaming, fun and well everything perspective play KOTOR I first
But if you have played KOTOR 1 you should be able to get KOTOR 2 to play if you lower the sets, though I'd think it should play at least acceptable at defaults.
Wait a sec - are you trying to run this on Vista?
Cat -
I'm not running Vista; I'm running XP Pro x64. Which appears to have been a bad decision.
-
Indeed, XP x64 is not made for gaming, there are so few drivers. Vista 64 is quite well supported now, but for XP it isn't even real XP, its based on Windows Server 2003's codebase and it's an off colour release...
If you can, you'll want to use XP x32 SP2 instead. What drivers are you using for graphics now anyway? I can't find any on the ATI website at all. What 8.xxx version does the Catalsyt Control Centre say when you open it?
Cat -
The latest driver that I can get to work is 8.321 from the 6.12 catalyst update...I guess I'll update to Vista, as opposed to going back to XP 32
-
You'll need modded drivers, but you can do it. KOTOR will be very sluggish, but it's a fun game.

A bit over a year ago I purchased a HP zv6270us laptop with the integrated xpress 200m graphics. I spent an excessive amount of time trying to get KOTOR and KOTOR2 to run on that laptop to no avail. That is not to say that it didn't install... but when you play it it runs at about 1-3fps which is completely unplayable. I posted some stuff on the net about this issue a while ago, I even worked with Killersneak who makes the DNA ATI drivers to try and find a solution... but ended up concluding that it was a lost cause.
The problem is associated with how the 200m handles OpenGL, which is to say it really doesn't handle it well at all. Here is the link to the stuff I posted last year when I was knee-deep into getting that laptop to run KOTOR. Good luck to ya!

Any hope playing KOTOR II with a xpress 200m?
