I play FPS games. Left 4 Dead 2 and Call of Duty mostly. However, I'm interested in giving WoW a shot. I've never been a fan of RPG games - I really never understood them.

I'm trying a 10 day trial. It seems interesting. I can't really come to a conclusion yet because I think I'll need to invest 30 days at least.

So I'm wondering -- anyone out there come from another genre and get hooked on WoW? What's the appeal?

I love RPGs but not WoW. It got boring, plus I couldn't stand the cartoony design.

I am a FPS fan and used to hate RPG type games however a friend of mine got me to join WoW on the 10 day trial back in December 08 and I am still playing it now (and every day). I found it very boring at first but soon grew to love it.

Don't do it trust me. You will get hooked and blow hundreds of dollars on this game. I'm sure some WoW players would tell you the same thing.

I used to play WoW but I have to say, the money I spent on WoW probably saved me SO much from spending much much more on other games now. So I agree that you shouldn't do it, but it shouldn't be for financial reasons

I figured I would give it a try (fall '08), when i sort of got burned out on Call of Duty MW. I STILL play it today with no end in sight. I love the game, but I have made myself limit how much I play (I only raid one night a week).

I knew people that failed out of college because of WoW. I refused to play it until I graduated. If you are in school then I honestly suggest not playing it.

Ive played it for about 3.5 yrs . And let me tell you , its a pretty damn good entertainment for 15$/month . Beats anything out there . It takes a lot of time too , if you refuse to be mediocre and want to experience game to its fullest . Playing with people is what makes WoW so great .

It was fun while it lasted , but now i devote my time for better things . One of the WoWs cons is that you cant really be a casual player , the game is just too complex and rich .

I played wow for 4 years and I will say DO NOT DO IT. Classic was fun, TBC was pretty decent, but 3.0 and on is just a joke. I have raided pretty much all the content wrath of the lich king has to offer and I will say the game has become a complete joke and centeres itself around the ultimate casual insta rewards only players. Great for business but bad for those who liked the idea of earning things as opposed to EVERYONE having them easily. Just my $.02.

My wife and I have had serious issues with WoW and it truly is scary how addictive it can be.

yes, it can be pretty addictive...

the leveling phase is fine, it's actually pretty good... some of the story line for the quests are well done...

then you meet up with some in-game friends and level together... and begin to discover the community aspect of the game... that is very nice...

then you discover trade channel... yea, there are many morons in this world... and trade channel proves just that...

i have many good friends that are now real life friends, that i've met while gaming...

the community aspect is nice... then there's the character... it grows while you play and it grows on you... that is quite addicting itself...

as you level and as you gear up in the end, it sucks you in.

if you raid, yea, that really does it for ya.
some high end raiding guilds require attendance of 4+ days a week commitment... it's nice to be on the top 10 raiding guild of your server... but it will take it's toll on you.

blizzard has made it easier to enjoy the end game content without having to join such rigorous end game raiding guild... most content can be seen in 10 man raid groups and you can also progress fine in 10 man raids...

and while leveling 1-80, you can meet 10 friends easily... even despite the millions of morons in the trade channels...

i have to agree 100% with this... i was so proud of my T1 (tier1) shoulders in the vanilla wow... and all those wipes in BWL... tough but was worth it...

nowadays, it's just like a dog chasing it's tail...

It also depends on the kind of person you are, it may be less addictive than MW2 to you if you're used to MW2. MW2 has fast paced gameplay, you respawn instantly (for most modes) and it takes a few minutes at worst in between games. There are times in WoW that slows down that may turn players like you off if you're looking for back to back quick paced action. Either way, you should know what you're getting into.

See that's what I'm talking about, for $15 per month you're saving yourself from spending the ($60+ per any other new game X number of games it takes to keep you busy in a month) per month [not counting for the initial cost for your account and any other expansions you may want to unlock immediately]

I disagree about the casual player but i'll go more in depth below...

I'm actually with you on this one liquid, maybe I'm a masochist but there used to be meaning behind those epic gear when it's just out of your reach. After WotLK I got epic'ed out so fast (relatively) and I am by no means one of those hardcore WoW players. And of course I see everyone else also epic'ed out with nearly the same gear (another result of 3.0's appeal to casual). I don't know, it just lost its appeal to me from there on.

Yup, I remember getting the elements on my shaman and wildheart on my druid. It was a grind, but it felt REALLY good finally getting the loot you worked for. TBC felt half as good, wrath just feels like a waste of time and more like a bad job you just don't want to do but feel compelled to do.

See what I love about MW2 is that I could play the game for hours on end, but at any time I could put the game down and forget about for a day or more. I couldn't do that with WoW, between the addiction and my friends/guild I felt compelled to be glue to my PC playing. :(

Agreed. TBC was great, had a nice time working and pushing progression through each tier then on to the next tier. Just liked the way the end game progressed in classic and TBC to how they have it now. You can go from fresh 80 to t10 all star in a matter of weeks.

Well one of my best friend told me to try it even though I *hate* the point and click style (which is more mmo/rpgs) gameplay, and swore that I would never get addicted, but in the end I got hooked lol. Played it for a year, but school got busy, and after not playing for a month I didn't feel like playing it anymore...Its actually a lot of work :/ gold/items/lvl/alts/ the list goes on. I stick will FPS/RTS' now.

Well if your an FPS player you might find WoW boring, I played it when it first came out, and a few more times after that in spurts but I found it to be a huge time consumer. I like games I can play casually as well as hardcore.

I think WoW hit its prime already, all these expansions just ruined it for me.

Im looking forward to Final Fantasy XIV instead. But as with any big MMO they can be very addicting and you have to put a pretty large amount of time into them to really enjoy them and get max benifit from the game.

That of course means your trading out real life stuff for game stuff. Dont get serious about a MMO if you have a needy girlfriend, kids to watch, stuff like that.

If your bored all the time or spending all your money going out drinking, a MMO is a cheap way to subsidized all that.

You shouldn't play on someones account, that aint fun. When you develop your own character and your own style it will be very addictive. I've played it for several years and I quit but sometimes I still think about WoW. I guess my will to get more free time and not failing school lets me not play it.

That's actually a very important point that I missed. Almost everyone plays WoW at one level or another for the social aspect, that's something that's more persistent between games of MW2. I don't play MW2 with anyone really so they're just strangers that I can bail out on at any time. But in WoW you spend hours in dungeons with people, jokes and /emotes and good times will be had.

Once you've made some friends there, the next level of addiction is helping each other out. Your original plan was to run dungeon x because it drops your piece of gear so you message your friends and form the group. Immediately after you guys kill the last boss, one of your friends say, "hey while we have this group, you guys wanna hit up dungeon y real quickly? it drops a piece of gear that I need" And you say yes because he just helped you out, you'd be a real if you didn't return the favor.

So that was an unplanned extra dungeon/hour that you ran/spent, the next level of addiction are runs that are planned. At this point you and your buddies are in the same guild with even more people to play with and an even larger social network. At this point raids of 10+ people are being done so you guys need to coordinate with each other by scheduling a day ahead of time so that everyone will be online and ready to go. So now you've gone from playing the game casually to reserving chunks of your time out of your regular schedule to play it. And this level of addiction stacks with the previous one too!

So you can see how it innocently tightens its hold on you if you let it. :D

i have friends who play and are in the same guild, and they only player 1-2 times per week since they've hit the max level.

anything can be done in moderation, but as with any progression oriented game, you won't want to put it down.

think about if you could do your life over again, except that you age, get stronger, better, and wealthier on a MUCH quicker scale. would you do it? since you're only a stones throw away from the next goal line all the time, you don't want to stop because something you're trying to attain is right around the corner. that's what keeps people addicted to WoW. that and the social portion of it.

well lvnatic, waste of money and time is a matter of perspective...

i am self employed and travel frequently...

i guess i can go out with my colleagues and drink my money away... but that's just not me... i enjoy my donwtimes logging in and playing this one game...

i keep it under control and when work takes it up a notch, i bow out from raiding and take care of my things...

so far, yes, most money spent on a single game... but i'm not at best buys every week or so looking for yet another game...

I just recently got my choppa and I love it!! If you hate the choppa then you must really dislike Wintergrasp, Ulduar and Strands of the Ancients. I got into WoW back in 2005, as a coworker kept hammering me about how much I would love it. My son and I got into it at the same time.

Over four years later and still enjoying it. I have been addicted at times but now I have it in control where I play it and not the other way around. My son and I love PvP (battlegrounds, arean and WG) the most. He is an arena beast, been duelist every season and so close to Gladiator. I have almost 125,000 Honor kills.

I have done heavy duty raiding through Naxx, but get bored of it within a month or two. Too much time standing around discussing what to do with the next boss. Though the dungeons sure are pretty and WoW is awesome looking on my M17x!!

I also love the social aspect of this game, made a ton of friends. This game has also saved me hundreds of dollars as I have not purchased another PC game since 2006! I used to but at least one game a month, so figure it out! I have been a Star Trek fan since 1969 and will NOT purchase Star Trek Online, because of WoW!

Blizzard makes the best games for PC by far and the way they patch this game every 3-6 months and add new content keeps it very fresh.

I am looking forward to Starcraft 2 as I played the original for 2-3 years. I am kind of hoping that it pulls me away from WoW for a few months before the next expansion (Cataclysm) comes out late this year. However even though I have taken a few breaks (3-6 months) since 2005, I know that I will most likely be playing this MMORPG for another 2-3 years, at least!
