I purchased the retail copy of Arkham Asylum a few days ago for my brother and myself. He installed it on his computer, installed a no-cd crack and has been enjoying the game so far.

I just sold him my Blu-Ray optical drive after installing the game to my hard drive so until I get another optical drive, I cannot play games without the disc. But I like to play games without the disc anyways.

I just installed a no-cd crack as well and am currently patching the game. I am worried if any glitches will pop up, like the infamous gliding glitch that caught a pirate. I hope the game doesn't think because I have a no-cd crack, that I pirated the game and will glitch the game which will ruin my progress in the game, so I'll have to get a crack to bypass the glitches, all this hassle just to play the darn game.

DRM only serves to impede my enjoyment of PC gaming. :(

On a related note, my brother told me that modern PC games install everything to the hard drive and so a developer can release an official no-cd patch or get an unofficial one. What if there's no no-CD cracks/patches for a game, so I rip the game as an ISO to my hard drive, if the game has any DRM, it will probably bother me, what can I do about that?

exactly, and you can blame all the pirates that steal games on it.

if you see one, smash his computer

Sorry mate but I think what you are trying to do is illegal so we can't and we shouldn't help you. As far as I can understand one copy of the game is for one computer that's why they want you to register the game to game for windows live (GFWL).
You are not supposed to install an unofficial no-cd patch and you might get the glitches pirate's copies do.
Since you have the original CD you can wait for the DVD drive to come and enjoy the game. Don't blame the DRM for your situation.

Assuming you really do own the games and are using a real CD-key, I'll ignore the legal technicalities.

Do NOT use cracks for any game that connects to the internet, they make you look like a real pirate and don't go crying if you get banned from the online service or you get in trouble for piracy (obviously the risk of getting sued is slim to none and you'd be able to get out of it, but they can do things like contact your ISP and have your ISP punish you, especially if you use a college ISP they love doing that).

Copying the ISO onto your hard drive is easy, and 95% of games don't have DRM that gets in the way of it.

Otherwise just suck it up and use the disc, or try to get downloadable versions of your games off steam or something like direct2drive.

Don't be scared by all the stuff on this thread Rahul. I know from personal experience that the chances of even your ISP noticing (and the further chances of them caring) are slim to none.

Downloading cracks is by far the least harmful thing you could do. I do it all the time, I don't have the ability to carry around fifteen discs.

Make sure that whenever you patch you install the according no-cd crack. So you probably installed a 1.0 crack and are now patching to (for the sake of this thread) 2.0. You then need to find a 2.0 crack.

Finding cracks is simple, you already know how to do that.

P.S. If I buy a game, I expect to be able to use it on multiple computers. Also, I believe the EULA has changed to include immediate family members, so what he's doing is not illegal at all.

Cracks are illegal, especially when they skirt DRM, even if he owns the game.

Thanks for the replies. I don't think it's too much to ask to play a game on my and my brother's computer, it is excessive for us to purchase two copies of a game. Its nice since now we split up the price of a game so I only paid $25 for Arkham Asylum.

If I have to use a crack or patch, so be it. I never play online anyways so for a game, he can play the multiplayer and I don't have to.

I just don't want to be hit by any intentional glitches used for pirated copies of a game in single-player, that's all. But many games do provide at least 2 installations.

Sorry, I have another question. Some games offer revoke tools for activations and I believe an activation is used up when you format your PC. What happens if a game doesn't have a revoke tool and you run out of activations because of reformats, you have to contact customer service then? All this DRM really is a pain.

    OP = Thief.

I can understand using a no-cd crack for a single game for a single user to play w/o worry of carrying around the disc and it getting scratched. I do it myself. But to blatantly buy a single game and use no-cd cracks to enable friends/family to play as well is just plain wrong.

Don't be ridiculous. I'm only sharing the game with one other person, my brother. Its just like if I buy the same game for a console and my brother and I take turns playing the game on the console, except here, we have our own PCs rather than sharing one console. It is the same thing. What is the problem? You expect me to purchase two copies of every game?

Its not my fault that DRM is so restrictive and unreasonable. Besides, most games offer several installations/activations. I can't even sell PC games like console gamers can, I should at least be able to share them with my fellow PC gaming brother in the same house as myself. Come on.

I can't see the game experiencing glitches because, surely it knows you have a legit copy because you activated it online. That pirate that got caught out must have used a crack and some method of bypassing the activation as well.

Discussion of cracks and drm removal violates are forum rules. Do not bring it up again.

If you don't like DRM, don't buy that manufactures games(and encourage your friends aswell)...companies listen to their bottom line($$$), not customers. Besides, two wrongs don't make a right.
