Besides civilization 4, are there any? I'd love to play the might n magic series online, but its too hard to find a match.

its not turned based but they are bloody good with a reasonable online group (just find a group with a spare slot) but HoI 2 doomsday/armageddon is awesome......its pretty much a grand strategy game set in the period before and during ww2 where you just try to win as either allies axis or comintern............i would suggest havign a quick look. you may or may not like it.

I am familiar with that game, but the MP community is almost dead.

not quite........have a look on the paradox forums in the MP section or look at the lord ederon forums or the MEM starfire forums.........you just need to find a time slot that suits you. generally its one night a week. so if you have no other life you could get a few games going.

What about Battle for Wesnoth? I've heard that the MP on there isn't bad (not personal experience though). And the game is free.

Doesn't Sins of a Solar Empire have a pretty active MP community? It's not strictly turn based, but pretty close.

I refuse to do that. If there is anything less than 50 people playing during peak hours, using the in-game browser, then I won't bother with MP.

Arranging matches through chat servers or messages boards is a pain and I don't want to limit myself to playing during a certain time-slot.

well most turn based strategy games take several hours minimum to play so don't lend themselves to pickup games where you just happen accross half a dozen people at the right time...........so unless you are goign to put some effort in you probably won't have much luck.

Thats true. My hopes weren't very high that someone was going to tell me of a turn based game with a really active MP community. Granted that in most turn-based games, the matches last a long time. This is part of the reason these games aren't very popular for MP.

most (well some) turned base strategy games omit the multiplayer altogether. like medieval 2 total war...........you can do the battles or you can hot seat the grand campaign, but there isn't any online multiplayer as each turn would take ages especially with a battle or 2.

so i don't think you will have all that much luck.............

Heroes of might and magic 3 and 5 have very active multiplayer communities. You will need Hamachi and google "Tournament of Honor". After that it's a matter of getting people on MSN messenger as contacts and arranging games.

If I need to use hamachi and messenger im not going to do it. That is a sign that the MP community really isnt that active.

Yeah, if you are willing to spend half a day or more playing a MP turn based game, why aren't you willing to spend 1/2 an hour setting one up?

The reason Hamachi is used is because the Ubi.com matchmaking service doesn't keep records that well. That's why the ToH people use Hamachi.

It's your call, games don't take long to set up once the configuration is fixed. Take it or leave it, I'm not bothered either way by someone so eager to dismiss a suggestion.

ToH's MSN list had less than 50 people and hasn't been updated in a long time.

lol, its been basically two pages of helpful suggestions and negative responses. I'm beginning to think that maybe you should give up on the idea of playing turn based games online. Maybe you should get a ds and play advanced wars. But maybe you'll be picky about the friends code too....
