    Hey everyone,

I am going to buy a notebook in about 10 months (I know, I plan ahead too far :) ). If possible I would like to be able to play the latest games, since I have a decent budget.

So I wanted to ask, is there any word on a geforce 8800 card being released?
Also, The laptop I'm looking at now has a 8600m GT 512MB. How well do you think that would play a game like Crysis?

    Thanks for your help.

By 10 months, you can pretty much expect to see the 8800m as the premier mobile graphics card from Nvidia...unless they foul up like they did with the 8700m, which is pretty much a placeholder until the 8800m can come out.

In 10 months, by then im sure that there will be plenty of 8800M cards in notebooks., an 8600 would play Crysis though. If you are waiting 10 months, its somewhat worthit, because of the 8800M card.

wow , I just registered and I'm glad i did. Those were some really fast replies. Thanks for the info, because I was unsure if nvidea had even announced 8800m cards.

btw, i'll buy it then cos til then, I'll be able to use a pretty good laptop from work. So itd be a waste to buy my own.

I was pretty much just hoping that in 10 months the 8800m (256 or dare I say it.. 512MB) and DDR3 would be common in laptops.
    Great

They have not announced the 8800m cards yet, but the 65nm G92 desktop 8800GT is being released shortly, and it's almost 100% certain that the mobile card will be based on that. Based on previous nVidia launches, this means that we will definitely see the mobile part on the market by the time you buy.

Yeah, I'm getting a laptop around next summer too...any chance of an 8800m fitting in a 15"?

The rule of thumb for upgrading laptop video cards: don't even bother. Only a small number of models use the MXM-I/II/III GPU form factors, and even if you can find a card with the same form factor as yours, there are other issues that just cripple the success rate.

Edit: Sorry, I just realized you're probably talking about buying a notebook preconfigured with an 8800 card. I wouldn't count on it, as high-performance cards are usually kept to the 17" builds, but there are a few 15" notebooks out there that house the 7950GTX, so it's very possible.

I agree that the chances of a 8800m GT in a 15 incher is small, but it's supposed to be very energy efficient, so we'll see. However, I've not seen a 15 incher with a better card than the 8600m GT or the Go 7700. If you could point out a 15 incher with a 7950 GTX, I'd be surprised.

Momentary lapse of sanity, sorry. I think I got it in my head that the Clevo M570RU/Sager NP5790 was a 15.4" notebook simply because it didn't support SLI (and the 9261, which I ordered, does). I need food...

Edit: And I even screwed up the model #.

The Clevo is 17 inch and does support the 7950. The Sagar 2090/Compal IFL-90 are 15 inchers that support the 8600m GT. They're different computers.

Lithus, the Amilo Pi 1536 is a 15.4" with MXM-III, don't know if it can handle a Go7950GTX, but I know for sure it can handle a Go7900GS or an x1800. And the Precision M65 (I think that's the one) can handle a Go7900GTX.

    Really?

    Where? :D

I haven't heard of any 15" with the 7950...that's just too hot of a card with really high power requirements for a 15" frame to handle (unless this 15" makes up for space constraints by going vertically instead of horizontally!

I wouldn't count on high-end performance cards like the 7950GTX or the 8800m in small frames such as the 15" laptop size. Highly unlikely. :(

EDIT: Just saw your post on the second page, it happens to all of us. ;)

I understand your curiosity of upcoming technology, but I don't understand how people want to decide what laptop to get a year from now. Technology changes quickly, and we all know that the 9xxx nvidia chips will more than likely be in notebooks in a year.

If you were to buy in the next few months, an 8600m GT is the way to go. Anything beyond that who know? ATI may offer something extraordinary down the road.

Best mobile cards are exclusively the preserve of 17" and above. 8800 will be the powerhouse DX10 card when it's released so no chance of it on a 15" unless Nvidia magically shrunk the card size and revolutionized notebook cooling and card wattage.

I agree that its really early to start looking for a notebook, and we cant say with certainty what kind of hardware will be released down the line. However, I am not trying to decide what laptop to get, rather, I was wondering what kind of technology will be available by then. I know computertechnology is constantly developing, but I wasnt sure when to expect something like an 8800 card for notebooks. I was hoping it would be likely that it would be not just available, but standard (in high end notebooks) by then, so I would be able to get it and stay within budget.

Though I admit that even though I am not yet buying one , I am already looking at laptops now. But thats just because I have the time, I'm curious, and I'll be better informed once I make the actual purchase regardless of current technology being slightly dated by then. I guess I'm just excited about buying one, which is why I am already thinking about what to get.

    Thanks for all the answers.

I understand. It is exciting for a new PC purchase, but I usually don't think much about it until a few months before I plan on making the purchase.

Either way, I think it's safe to say in ten months, something else besides the 8600m GT will be the king GPU of the 15" laptops.
