I want to be able to play games on med-high? on a lg34um95. I'm going to upgrade my laptop to do it, but I'm wondering will a 970m 6gb do it fine? Would maybe a 870m 6gb do it?

I know the 970m would be better, but at a $350 difference I'm wondering if the 870m would be fine.

I might be wrong and neither would do it...I might have to move down to the 34um65 for 1080p instead in that case. But I rather have the 1440p version.

I plan on buying both in a week so searching for answers :(

3440x1440 is almost 2.4x the resolution of 1080p. If you want to push current and future games at native resolution Medium-High, you'll want a 980M at least, preferably 970M/980M SLI.

If you'll be gaming plugged into that massive monitor, might I suggest building a 970 SLI desktop?

Ya that is another option, building a desktop. I just didn't want to have to deal with syncing files everyday when I get home... but it might be what I have to do :(

Always build a desktop if you can.

    Yeah...just sucks.

But how are some people able to run surroundview with current graphics cards?

    This
    image007.png

shows a 870m running BF4 at 5760x1080 at 38fps with medium settings. Wouldnt the 3440x1440 be easier to handle then 5760x1080? Sorry for that n00b question but I just want to make sure my math is correct...

Don't want to seem like I'm arguing, just trying to figure what is best for me

I can definitely tell you that 60 FPS will be out of the question for demanding games if that's important to you.

Another thing to keep in mind about those very generous BF4 numbers is that most games aren't as easy to run or well optimized--especially nowadays. Tom's used a singleplayer timedemo at Medium preset, not exactly the most demanding or representative test scenario compared to 64-player multiplayer, where frame rates can drop down to half.

Taking the Far Cry 3 results from the same article, you'd get about 24 FPS extrapolating that 3440x1440 is about halfway between 5760x1080 and 4800x900. Not very playable IMO.

The GT60 they tested had enough inputs to take up to 3 external 1080p monitors, that's why it supports Nvidia Surround. Not very laptop--indeed I reckon most don't--has such I/O configuration.

You'd need a 980M SLI setup if you want a laptop, or a 970 SLI setup if you want a desktop.
