How does Quake Wars run on a GeForce 8400M or similar? Has anybody tried out the demo on their laptop?

I can tell you it runs maxed on 8600M GT, 2GB ram, T7100 and x64. Beyond that, I can't really help you.
The minimum requirements are:
Minimum System Requirements
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 2.8 GHz or AMD(R) Athlon(TM) XP 2800+ processor (Pentium 4 3.0GHz or equivalent for Windows Vista)
Memory: 512MB RAM (768MB for Windows Vista)
Graphics card: 128MB NVIDIA(R) Geforce(TM) 5700 or ATI(TM) Radeon(TM) 9700 (full list of supported chipsets below)
Sound card: 100% DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card
Harddisk: 750MB of free hard drive space, plus 200MB for Windows swap file
Internet: Broadband connection and service required for full gameplay and downloads. Features may change without notice.
SUPPORTED VIDEO CHIPSETS
NVIDIA GeforceFX Series (5700 or higher, not including 5700LE and 5700VE)
NVIDIA Geforce 6 Series (6200 or higher) NVIDIA Geforce 7 Series (7300 or higher)
NVIDIA Geforce 8 Series
ATI Radeon 9700 or higher
ATI Radeon X700 or higher
ATI Radeon X1650 or higher
Since your card slides in safely above the 5700 minimum requirement, I would say you'll do fine. Don't quote me on that, though. -

Based on the minimum spec's and your replies I'm pretty hopeful but still it'd be cool to see it running on an 8400M to see how it performs and what sorts of effects/details can be enabled without taking too big of a big hit to the framerates
-
It runs fairly well on my stock G1s with all settings turned to max (shadows off) at 1280x800.
I'm sure 8400GS will run it just fine. -

You might want to try out Systemrequirementslab.com or YouGamers. Both have interactive meters that can give you an idea of how your computer will run.
Both are little more that glorified system requirements lists, though, so beyond minimum and recommended specs take everything with a grain of salt. -
The game is hardly playable for me, around 10-25 fps. I have everything turned down to the lowest setting and it's set to my native resolution(1280x800). Even using the 163.44 forceware drivers the game is still chugging. I have a 8600m GT, T7300 2.0 ghz, and 2gb of ram. I'm completely clueless
-
I have a Go7950GTX and run it maxed out with 8xAF and 2xAA at 1680x1050 and getting 30fps all the time (I think the game is capped at 30fps?
) My old laptop have a Go6600 128mb (8400 should be better than that) and I run it on low settings at 800x600 with 30fps no problem...
-
is it possible that it's running slow because of vista and directx10?
-
Now if only there was a way to remove that fps cap....from what I have heard they capped the demo at 30fps to reduce load from the servers -
alright, i reverted back to the stock drivers and turned off shadows, vsync, smooth foliage, and smooth particles. I have everything else set to max with 2xaa and 2xaf. Now i'm getting a solid 30fps, but i had no clue there was a fps cap on the demo.
-
First of all, game is capped at 60fps, not 30. If you have vsync on, it will cap at 30fps unless your PC can deliver a consistent 60fps, which it probably cannot.
See this screenshot here, FPS is 56.
Note that this is off my desktop PC, not laptop.

dude even the official website mods and the live chat say its capped at 30fps
-
You didn't even say which 8400M it is - there's massive, massive differences between the 3 different types. 8400MG would suck for the game, 8400GS not so great but definitely playable on something above lowest settings, 8400MGT should slide into that medium-ish zone....
-
8400m GT here, playing at 1280x800, almost all details on high, foliage and grass details reduced to normal. anisotropic on 0, no AA
make sure u get the newest drivers. my 8400m gt gets better framerates with the 163.44 drivers than my 7900gs with 9x.xx drivers...
very much surprised about the performance tho, I "accidentally" bought a gamer laptop, lol -
Oops, yeah sorry I was talking about an 8400 GS. But it sounds like it should be fine
Anybody have screenshots of it on an 8400 (all versions) ? -

In addition, servers are locked at 30 ticks because of load considerations. Rendering physics at 60 ticks, like traditional D3 engines, would be too much of a strain in a 16 x 16 battle, especially in this game's new outdoor environments. It is true that you can render more than 30 FPS, but you will never receive world information from the sever at higher than 30 FPS.
For truly unlocked FPS, then you need to enter the following commands at the console (Control+Alt+~):
seta com_unlockfps 1
seta com_unlock_timingMethod (0, 1, or 2)
seta com_unlock_maxfps 60 (or whatever value you wish)
For the cvar com_unlock_timingMethod, you should experiment with the options (0,1, or 2). 0 will give you the highest pure frame rate, but will also lead to heavy stuttering because it may attempt to render ahead when there are insufficient resources to do so. 1 will slip in extra frames when possible, but will lock it to multiples of 30 generally. 2 will slip in extra frames according to a specific algorithm. 2 is default.
A Note on the cvar com_unlock_maxfps- it rounds down by multiples of 30. Putting anything from 31-59 will default to 30. -
I have T7300, 2gb ram and 8600m GT, run the game 1280x800 and all on High and Ultra on shadow. Anti is off. 30fps all the time. Something wrong with the demo?
-
Just joined an online game and I got 40fps average.
Maybe the singleplayer is capped at 30fps but the online multiplayer isn't...

What can I say Quake wars auto selected a bunch of settings, I set the res to 1280x800 just to see and was very very pleasantly surprised, I didnt have fraps running or anything , but the gameplay was very smooth for my X1400
I was astounded at how much detail they got to run on my machine, where FEAR and HL2 had failed, the demo code seems to be very well optimised, I hope it stays that way, and its definitely a game for me to buy, I have missed that style of play since RAGE went out of business and stopped supporting Mobile Forces (which is still great fun when you get it to run LOL) -
-
i found out that my hardware was forcing 8x AA and AF in the nvidia control panel, i switched those to application controlled, now i'm getting 30-60fps consistently.
i'm running everything with high settings, no shadows, no AA, 2xAF -
No AA? (AA = Anti-Aliasing ?)
That must look pretty bad without any AA?? -
even at 1280x800 and no AA, the game still looks great
-
Would I find these settings in Catalyst? I have an ATI card.
Anybody try Quake Wars?
