I saw MW2 was on steam sale this weekend for $14.99, with all the map packs it would be $30.

    1) Does anyone play this online or is it pretty much old news?

    2) I head this game is full of cheaters and hackers, is this true? (ie more cheaters and hackers than Black Ops)

I play a decent amount of COD:Black Ops, but I prefer the MW theme and I loved MW2 on PS3. I like the larger maps vs Black Ops and I prefer the audio & perks in MW2 vs Black Ops, so that makes me think about switching.

But with MW3 just 2.5 months away, investing in MW2 kind of seem like waste of money.

    Thoughts, opinions?

    Thanks in advance.

MW3 seems like a waste of money since it looks EXACTLY like MW2.

And are there dedicated servers for MW3? Cause there are for MW2 now.

    1. MW2 is still one of the most played games on Steam. It usually has more active players per day than Black Ops. You can check out the stats here: Steam: Game and Player Statistics

    2. I haven't played MW2 in many months now, but I used to play a lot (Prestiged a few times) and while yes you do get a hacker/cheater in a game every now and then, the vast majority of the time I didn't encounter hackers.

If MW3 were not coming out so soon, then I'd say go and get MW2. However, with MW3 right around the corner I do not recommend getting MW2 now. MW3 would have to be really terrible for all the MW2 players to not switch to it. I say wait until MW3 and then go for that if you're set on getting a MW series game.

They both are bad in my opinion. MW2 was some of the worst PC port ever made.

A Modern Warfare game actually going on sale for half the original price? What is going on here? ._.

MW2 was good in terms of the basic mechanics (the feel of the game, not the balance), and the graphics were good.

Major problems included no dedicated servers. Usually there is a computer dedicated to handling the game server on it's own (fast) internet line. In MW2, one of the players is chosen to be the host. This can cause extreme problems when the host either disconnects, or if the host has an average or worse internet connection. Since there is no vote kick, there is no immediate recourse for hackers (or griefers, which aren't that common because most modes have no friendly fire). Since there are no admins, you also can't check to see for sure if people are cheating or hacking. All you can do is leave if suspicious. Eventually, they should be banned from the game, but they won't be forced to leave while you're playing in a server.

In games with servers, the server administrators can review and oversee operation of their server. They can ban players who cheat or cause grief to others.

The fact that there are no servers means that automatic matchmaking handles the game setup. The problem is that the matchmaking is implemented poorly in MW2. Often times it takes forever to find a match, or will mess up and not include everyone in your party.

There are also serious balance issues with the perk system, some of the weapons and especially the explosives, and sometimes combinations of those three aspects.

This is what I mean, well said. Also the mini nuke was really annoying.

Yep I agree that no dedicated servers for this game really degraded the funness (is this a word?) of the game many times when I was playing.

Depends on the gametype you like to play. During the day is when there are the most people on line, and the game types played the most are TDM, Dom, SnD and hardcore TDM. At night though it is hard to get into a game thats not TDM, it takes time and also hoping that you dont get in a game with a waller or aimbotter. If you do buy it, skip the DLC's, I had to message steam to remove both of them from my account because I almost never got into a game unless it was with a bunch of friends I play with. Pay the $15 and leave it at that, it is still a fun game to play. If you dont play it, its $15, no harm done.
And just to repeat, there are NO dedicated servers
