    Hey guys

I just noticed that you could play Crysis on DX9 mode. On my HD2600XT, I was getting around 25fps on 1280x800 res with all settings medium. Slowing down to around 20 or so in a big gun fight. Wasnt impressed.

After trying the game in DX9 mode, I love it. Same res, settings on medium and high (game effects, post processing, sound). Everything is nice and smooth. Dont know what actual fps is, but it feels like its in the 30s, or high 20s when it slows down in a big fight. The high post processing effects look gorgeous especially for explosions.
From what I understand, no DX10 mobile card could run the DX10 eye candy in Crysis, so is anyone bothering with it?

I thought DX9 on higher settings looked nicer and ran much smoother than DX10 on medium, which didnt look or run great.

Yes, I run the Crysis demo in DX10 with all max settings @ 1920x1200... runs like f********** but it looks nice :p

I've only run it in DX10 so far. 1024x720, medium settings save for shaders, post-processing and shadows on low and textures on high. I get a good 30+ in most cases, at points spiking at a max of 44. I'm happy with that, but I'm going to give it a run in DX9 with some upped settings and see how it goes. Although DX10 has some improvements over DX9 (in theory), so far I haven't seen anything so drastic that it would justify sacrificing some eye candy for it.

I think it's still going to be a good while before we get the "improvements in graphics without sacrificing playability" that DX10 has promised.

I'm very interested in trying that, but from my own (non-existent) experience in modding game files I don't grasp what it is he's trying to say to do in that tutorial.

Can someone give me a better idea? Or anyone who has taken the time to do this, if you would be so kind as to simply zip and upload the modded files so we could all replace them in our own, it would be more than generous of you.

If you have Vista, go to Games Explorer, right click on Crysis and click "DX9 Play". It says something to that effect in the drop-down menu.

Read the 8th post in that thread. And if you need more info, browse through that thread. You'll get the idea. Remember that you need to have Windows XP, to get most out of it.

Ah okay, got it. That wasn't so difficult. I pulled an all-nighter last night, so you'll have to excuse my half-fried brain. :p

I had assumed that it would still make the difference if you had played it in DX9 mode as well, even on the Vista OS?

If running DX9 looked just as good as DX10 in vista, then I am definitely switching back to XP. The only reason I had kept Vista was due to it's supposed DX10 graphics and "Boost if speed which had not being seem yet".

    Thanks.

I've installed and finished the demo, but for some reason it's not in my in my Game Explorer. Can I right-click on any shortcut to the game and choose Dx9?

    Thanks

DX10 mode is abysmal; on an 8700M-GT 512MB I found the game to be unplayable even at medium settings. Turned on DX9 mode and I was able to run at the same res with almost everything on high.

According to those who have tried the demo in both XP and Vista with same graphics settings (~max) and system configuration (Dual/Quad core,...8800gtx, etc.), the XP DX9 doesn't only look exactly the same as Vista DX10/"tweaked" DX9, but also runs better (=better framerates).

    Yep your absolutely right

also now very high setting which is vista exclusive can be enabled in XP. Although XP wont have DX10 but the quality looks just as impressive.

and fps with very high in XP >>>> fps with very high in Vista

    So many broken promises.
This is all Bill Gate's fault.
Hopefully he and nvidia get together and fix this bs, otherwise I'll have to kick some @ss.

you dont have to mod/hack anything to run the game in dx9 mode. just go into the games folder, then right click, then select play dx9

for some reason, when i play in dx9, the menus are really sluggish. im hoping this is just a glitch. once game loads, no probs at all. much much smoother than dx10. can play on 1280x800 on mostly high settings with good 30+fps

quick question about Crysis.... how do you enable higher resolutions? I'm trying to run in 1440x900, native for my screen, and it's not an option... is that normal? Did I just miss something some where? Highest it shows is 1366x768 or something like that, so been running it in 1280x800, but would like to try 1440.... any ideas or am i just dumb and missed something?

Another disappointing delivery from Vista; not only is Vista's implementation of DX10 unusable as you people report, but it couldn't even run my games, which are by no means demanding (EE2, Steam games, AOE3).

I've run the game in DX9 and DX10 modes on my 8800GTS, and I honestly haven't seen any difference in performance between the two. The only difference seems to be that the "Very High" settings are grayed out, but if you aren't using those anyhow there's no difference.

After trying it in DX9 mode, I was able to play it at the same resolution in all high/2-3 medium settings at roughly the same FPS. I was generally getting something between 20-30. It doesn't sound like much, but for some reason the switch to DX9 even made 20 feel acceptable for a shooting game. Maybe there's some difference in how the scenes are rendered that made it feel more playable to me.

You should try new drivers - the 169.01 are the best for Crysis.
You can actually hack some .cfg files now to get the game to run at "very high". That's what I am doing and it looks even better (although not by much).

Hey Chaz, actually running those drivers, and it runs great in 1280x800, just don't even have the option of 1440x900, my native res... play everything else in that res, but it's not an option in Crysis.... haven't figured out what i've done wrong yet....

I haven´t noticed much difference performance wise on my 8800GTX overclocked to 630/2000 either. I play it at 1440x900 DX10 in Vista, with almost all options on very high except shaders and post processing and it runs really good, now maybe not 40 fps but at least 30+.

I still think the game could be better optimized or the drivers themselves, which I believe will improve.

In dx9 mode i can put water, texture on high the rest on medium and shadows on low...
    Works great :)
