Anyone else disappointed with no 4k / UHD laptops for GTX970M / GTX980M launch?

After looking at these it would seem that there are no 4k / UHD laptops coming out with GTX970m / GTX980m at launch.

I did a quick check of all the machines listed and did not find any that had option for 4k / UHD screen.
If one of the machines has the option, then I apologize in advance, but I couldn't find it.

Considering that there are already a few 4k laptops available this really seems like a missed opportunity.

I am assuming all the manufacturers are holding off till CES 2015?

If so, very disappointed as this was going to be my Christmas present ;)

Going to have to wait till Feb / Mar 2015 now and buy a desktop instead until then.

    Thanks Killerinstinct! Much appreciated!

I didn't see it as the GS60 said 3k and while it was listed on Nvidia's slides, I looked at only 4 out of the 5 listed and actually missed the GS60 on the slide. When I saw it as GS60 3k in the post I didn't think to check.

Agreed, but still before Christmas, so it could be a present ;)

Would have really liked a GTX980m instead though. Given the difference between a GTX980 and GTX980m, I am curious to see how a GTX980m SLI performs against a GTX980.

hehe yeah and it is technically in the Nvidia announcement, maybe the sites linking to it could have done a better job of it stating it was a 4k laptop.

CyberPowerPC has their own customized version of the GS60 (the Fangbook Edge) with the 970M, an upgraded CPU, and a 4k screen - and it appears to be available right now: Fangbook Edge

I cannot vouch for the quality of CyberPowerPC-customized laptops, but am interested if anyone knows, since I am considering getting this particular model.

I'm not disappointed at all. I think Maxwell [970M and 980M] puts gamers in an excellent position for 1080p gaming. You are now capable of playing at a steady 60+ FPS on pretty much every game on the highest settings possible, and horrible dips are now a thing of the past. You will rarely see dips into the "unplayable" 20's with Maxwell (970M and 980M), if at all... With Kepler we pretty much always see huge dips into the low digits causing issues with game-play. That's basically no longer an issue for 1080p gaming! Now, even those of us with 120Hz monitors can enjoy nearly 120 FPS on a lot of games! So, no. I'm not disappointed. I expected 4k to become a "thing" when Pascal and Skylake hit, and I think I am safe to say that 2015 will be the last year 1080p is considered the standard for gaming laptops.

    That's my 2 cents. ;)

DISCLAIMER: I do not own a high-DPI laptop or screen yet, but have used others' machines that do (eg the Yoga 2).

It depends on what apps you use. Windows depends on the application to report whether it is high-DPI aware, and many apps incorrectly report that they are when in fact they are not. App developers have been under pressure from their users to fix this issue, and it shows. Chrome, Steam, Dropbox, and Adobe Reader used to have major problems with high-DPI screens on Windows but they have reportedly been fixed (with Dropbox, only in the beta). There are no doubt still a number of apps out there that you will see issues with, though.

Many Microsoft apps like Explorer, Office, and Visual Studio work very well on high-DPI displays. However, MMC (which hosts utilities like Computer Management and Device Manager) is a bit blurry, and SQL Management Studio is just awful on high-DPI.

I am just relying on the fact that fixes seem to be coming out thick and fast for apps that are broken, because there are now a lot of users out there with high-DPI screens. I see high-DPI as the future and would rather buy a machine that has support for it and deal with some app issues, than have out-of-date hardware soon after I buy.

Have you guys seen any 4k display laptops with a 980m or 970m's in SLI. I haven't had any luck finding any. All I see are 970m notebooks.

Shouldn't the card that can actually run it be the one attached to a 4k display?

I've been following 4k laptops for a while. It seems they are always paired up with an anemic card in comparison to the cards available.

The toshiba p50t came with the m265x from AMD and the lenovo y50 came with the NVIDIA 860m. I've been waiting for an adequate 4k laptop for months.

With the cost of the panel, maybe they want to keep other costs down. Also most of the laptops with high-res screens are also in the slim gaming laptop category - maybe partly because 3k and 4k panels are not cost effective yet in larger sizes than 15 inches (and bulkier laptops usually have bigger screens), and also possibly because people associate high res with portables due to Apple and the tablet market.

TDP are not the same. 970m is 65W, 980m is 85W.

also the freq boost might be up-clocked more

Unfortunately GPU's are binned at specific TDP. Actual TDP can be quite a bit less or a bit more. The 870m and 880m are both considered 100W TDP cards, but the 880m clearly puts out more heat and draws more power.

According to Prema, who has the inside scoop on this stuff, states the TDP's as 970m 65W, 980m 85W: Maxwell GM204: GTX980M / GTX970M

If I were to go 4k in 3 years when I replace this machine I would want it in a 17" model. Has anyone seen a 17" 4k screen in the wild?

Nope.. Not seen anything.. I would have thought that the 3K/4K pannels would come to 17" laptops before the 15" ones as the pannels would be easier to make for the bigger screen size..

What I read said that no one is manufacturing such a panel at this time.

I hope that changes. I may delay my purchase until Q1 2015 just to see the new laptops! I read that's when Broadwell gets released and I'm hoping there will be more 4k options.

Heck I'd take a 1080p 120Hz panel any day over a 3K or 4K but those seem few and far between as well. Not sure why.

D2 Ultima was saying that they stopped making 120Hz pannels in 2011... That would make sense of the limited supply..
