There has been a tangent about RoF in the old-versus-new-games thread, but I thought it deserved its own thread. Anyone else here play it? What's your favorite aircraft? Best war story?
For those not familiar, Rise of Flight is a World War I flight sim originally released in 2009 and under steady improvement since then. It's detailed graphically and it has a detailed realism panel, like the old Dynamix sims and IL-2, so it can be as user-friendly or as brutally realistic as you want. You can get a free "demo" (very substantial) in which two of the planes are flyable. The retail version (about $35) has perhaps 8 flyable aircraft. And then you can continue to expand the flyable planes with DLC; a few dozen are currently available, and they cost about $7 apiece (substantial discounts are available if you buy in bulk). I think it's the best survey flight sim since IL-2 Sturmovik.

Awesome gameplay trailer: Rise Of Flight - Battles Of War (part2) Rated - YouTube
WWI flight sims are different from anything else out there, in that the aircraft are so fragile (the wings snapping in a steep dive is a very real risk, not just a theoretical concern) and the dog-fighting is so up close and personal (I'm generally about 50 meters away from my opponent before I open fire). Machine gun rounds could pass right through a cloth wing without having significant effect, but a couple rounds in an unarmored engine or cockpit could spell disaster for a plane, so accuracy is critical. Clearing a gun jam in the midst of a close dogfight really brings home how new all this technology is.
My one gripe about RoF is that there aren't any zeppelins yet, though rumors are they're on the way. There are observation balloons, and balloon-busting and defense is a big part of the campaign (as it should be). There are level bombers, and making an attack run on a trio of Gothas is suitably intimidating.

Baka thinks that if it's a flight sim, HTWingNut is the man Mitlov is looking for.
Baka do think it looks quite interesting though ._. -
WingNut and I have already talked about it at length in the old versus new games, but I was figuring other people who might be interested would have missed the discussion buried in that thread...

Found another gameplay trailer, this one featuring a German raid on a flight of Handley-Page heavy bombers (true behemoths). Most exciting trailer I've seen for the game so far.

And while the Handley-Page is AI-only in the retail version, you can buy a flyable version of both it and the Gotha (the main two heavy bombers of WWI). -
I like rise of Flight but it's definitely a challenge making a kill even on the easiest difficulties. Flight sim indeed.
But sometimes I just want to fly around and admire the gorgeous scenery and paint schemes on the planes.

Playing a flight sim using a keyboard is a horrible idea. Even a gamepad would work better.
-
For $30, you can drastically improve the gameplay experience. You don't need a $200 joystick-throttle-and-pedal setup to enjoy the game, but a real joystick (with twist function for the rudders) is essential. -
im just trying to figure out good keyboard settings to play the game with any semblance of skill. if you do happen upon some good kb settings please post them here.
ps: wish listed the item, just in case -

Was playing Wings of Prey the other day and looking to trade somebody a spare game I have for HAWX 2.
May add this on the list.
I have an old Saitek joystick, never seems to work too well for me though base does not stay put easy and something about it just feels lack luster.
On racing side I have a G27 though so all good there
I think I would go for something like this if I was to get a new one: http://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-Flight-Hotas-Flight-Playstation-3/dp/B001CXYMFS/ref=pd_cp_e_1
more stability than joystick alone like mine and having access to buttons w/ two hands instead of one could make a huge difference for games that have tons of button binds. -
trvelbug--I like the idea of using a gamepad with one of the thumb-pad joysticks serving as your joystick. Not like a real joystick, but far closer than the keyboard is. Amazon.com: Logitech Gamepad F310: Electronics
Vicious--I've heard good stuff about the Thrustmaster T-Flight. Good mix of utility and affordable price. Though for Rise of Flight, it's overkill. Any joystick with a rudder function (twist) and a throttle slider is adequate. I've only bothered to map two functions to the joystick: fire machine guns, and "recharging" the machine guns (I think something was lost in translation here--it's sliding the bolt to clear the chamber of the machine guns before you fire, and if the gun jams). No gear to raise, no flaps to modulate, no multiple types of cannons to choose between, no rockets, etc. -
You cannot play non-arcade flight games with a gamepad. Response is too slow. Something like that Logitech Extreme 3D Pro is a great budget stick for the casual flight simmer. I have one of those because I like a single stick for quick plug in and go and not setting up a full HOTAS.

I bought Rise of Flight and played it on my i7 920 rig. Forgot to put it into my new i7 2600K rig... will install it soon! I also bought extra planes online. But this game is frustrating because it's TOO REALISTIC and it's hard to shoot down anything flying or on the ground. I had more fun playing the old 1991 Dynamix Red Baron than this game. May I should give it another try, because it has awesome graphics and it'd look great on my Dell 30" monitor!
-
If you could do Red Baron, you can do this. -
I don't want to spend another 40 bucks on another sim right now
-
Didn't know about this one, thankyou. And it has a demo, downloading now. Shall post up what I think.

Just downloaded and installed the free play version. First impressions are good. Gunnery is quite tricky initially, very twitchy, until you learn to stop over controlling. These aircraft are quite slow, roll slow, but consequently turn on a dime, just don't get the nose attitude too high, or you'll stall quite quick.
I must be missing something, but I can't seem to get any missions going from the mission menu. Do I have to buy the aircraft before I can play the mission? Even for the included aircraft, it seems like I have to buy the aircraft. -

Great link. You really start to appreciate what these guys did when playing Rise of Flight?! I'll have another crack now, see if I can get the missions to work, I'll let you know what happens.
-
As for campaign, it's a setup made to encourage people to buy additional planes. They list all sorts of campaigns all over the map, but you can't start the ones that feature planes you haven't bought yet. You have to find a campaign where you already own the plane. With only two in the demo, that might be hard. I know in the campaign mode there's an option to filter by plane; maybe the same is true in single missions? -

How many hours have you logged on the sim?

777 is having a huge aircraft sale! Any plane for $2.99. I got the Sopwith Dolphin (a remarkably handsome and capable late-war fighter, though never produced in the numbers of the Camel), the Fokker Eindecker (the first plane to have a synchronized machine gun and the perpetrator of the infamous Fokker scourge) and the Airco DH2 (the Allies' response to the Eindecker...not having a synchronized machine gun, they instead used this bizarre-looking pusher-propeller design).
Haven't tried out the new planes yet. Still obsessed with the Albatros DVa. Amazing aircraft. I won my first duel today (a one-on-one quick match against an experienced pilot). He was in an SE5a, me in my Albatros. After a bit of a turning battle, I got him squarely in my sights in a split-S and opened up. Didn't hit the pilot, and only hit the engine a little (enough to prompt some extra smoke), but tattered the upper wing and the left side of his fuselage. He climbed away (the SE5a can easily out-climb the Albatros, even damaged) and headed west. Not a kill, but still triumphant. Then went and blew up an observation balloon, which never ceases to entertain -
can you guys recommend me a wireless logitech joystick that i can use with the unifying reciever?
@mitlov
the dolphin and those other planes come standard in the iron cross edition, which is the same price as the regular rof. but i agree that the albatross dv is probably the easiest plane to fly. -
I don't believe Logitech makes a wireless joystick that works with the unifying receiver. Best to get a corded one, because the one stick that's wireless that I've seen is crap.

One of the reasons I have a hard time with ROF is because the target assist does not work in the external view and I cannot free look in the external view also.
I love playing in the external view since I get to enjoy the eye candy and it helps me overcome the limitations of using a keyboard. It's the main reason I like wings of prey more than ROF.

Ok really enjoying RoF. I got the Missions the work Mitlov, I wasn't picking the right aircraft types!
Started a campaign up, really enjoying it. Only up to day 4 though! I like how each days missions are detailed, you see which ones you are taking part in, who you are flying with. You can see the reports on the other missions as they go and see how your fellow squadron mates are doing. Makes you sad when you see someones been wounded or shot down.
Unfortunately I've run into a couple of problems. First one is I keep getting what appears to be a disconnect warning top right of the screen (two red computers with a squiggly line in between). Well I'm taking this to be a disconnect warning? It appears that the game stats are all recorded online, when I finish a campaign mission now, I get no stats. No kills recorded. Quite annoying. Anyone experiencing this?
And lastly, for some unknown reason, my view point in the cockpit has changed. It used to be slightly offset to the right so that I could see the gun sight. Now, it has changed to be completely central, the bar in the windshield runs right down the center of the screen, obscuring the gun sight and the enemy aircraft when I'm trying to engage. I can move my head using the keyboard commands to the right, but when I then use the joystick hat key to look around followed by the numeric keypad 5 to recenter my view, it goes back to the same infuriating position?! Driving me insane, and I don't know why it did it?! Really dampening the fun I'm having. -
Bump, any suggestions to fix my above listed problems?
-
I've had the same problem with the disconnect; don't know what causes it or how to fix. Gameplay is fine, but it tells me at the end of the mission that there were no kills by anybody.
Which aircraft are you having the gunsight issue with? I know the issue you're talking about from IL-2 Sturmovik, but I haven't noticed any offset sights so far. Then again, my gameplay is primarily limited to the Albatros DVa, Airco DH2, and Fokker Eindecker. -
The problem is with the Spad that you get in the demo (free) version. Seriously is ruining the game for me. Also the disconnect issue keeps occurring making the campaign mode pointless. Such a shame as I really enjoyed it and was planning on picking up some new planes.
I'll keep searching for a solution. -
Just spent 90 minutes playing, no problem with the disconnect issue. Are you still having it?
Couldn't reproduce the problem with the Spad either. Camera stayed properly off-center.
Still love the Albatros DVa twice as much as any other plane...
Anyone else here play Rise of Flight?
