Did anyone get Napoleon Total War? I'm hesitant to purchase it after wasting money on Empire, so I'd like to hear some opinions about the game before I buy it.

check the reviews. I bought Empire on release date and really felt I got cheated by Creative Assembly. Not really excited about Napoleon because in essence its just a different timeline with some more graphic upgrades (cannon explosions, smoke, etc.). Not worth 40 bucks IMHO. Already paid 50 for Empire and should be getting Napoleon for free for their botched Empire game. Going to acquire Napoleon by other means...

P.S. Bought Rome, Medieval 2 +expansion and Empire. I've just lost faith in CA.

i looked at it, the single player is alot more constrictive then previous total wars. I used to love to do a long campaign over 50 years or so.

In this the campaigns last maybe 15 years, i know its called Napoleon total war, but it appears very narrow minded

They should make something like Medieval II again.. It was awesome, just everything about it.. Empire is a mess, imo.

    ntw is a stand alone
fwiw etw is much better now all patched up to 1.5 and there will be a patch coming out this month i believe.
i thought id hate this game after coming from mw2 with so many troops and nations.
but i like it since tactics and formations is more important in this game, which is a reflection of the era.
but i have to say that the added troops in the dlc make etw so much more fun though.
there is also a mod out there called darthmod that heavily changes the game into something more realistic and challenging ( better ai). havent used it myself though.

I have played all of the TW series and graphically Napoleon is the best. The single player is constrictive in the sense its limited to just a few years (each turn is 2 weeks).

The point is to recreate the battles and scenarios leading up to them. Also, it allows you or others to take part in an active battle. For instance, if you are about to engage an enemy force the game will allow another player to control the other army (drop in battles). You can ofc turn this off in the options.

Reinforcements are controlled via supply depots and you have to be in friendly territory with a depot to increase your troop count. The campaign map does a better job of explaining where you can intercept other troops or setup ambushes. In battle, generals also highlight their sphere of effect when you have them deployed so you can get a better feel of where you need to place them for maximum performance.

Furthermore, I like the overview much better now as it actually shows you when your general is in trouble or if there is a potential critical vulnerable to your army. The battle map also takes into account terrain.

As I had mentioned before the graphics are quite nice when turned up. Seeing troops make a lot of smoke when on a double time march or the cannons blasting out is more refined than it was in Empire. Musket fire is also more interesting.

Overall, I would say if you are a fan of the series then get the game as it is a good step forward. However, as a fan of the series myself I think this should have been considered an expansion of the Empire game similar to Barbarian or Alexander was.

You guys feel Empire is still nerfed even with the newest patches? personally i try to keep an eye on the modding community. some of those guys can turn coal into a diamond.

    http://www.totalwarforums.com/

About napoleon's brief campaign i made alexander campaign which was similar in length to napoleon last four times as long. its all about editing the turn length from (1.00 to 0.25) did it in midieval 2 as well to be able to play out my game before those pesky hand gunners made my elite units obsolete. they should explain it in the forum above.

they way the series is going i think we may see WW2 and modern TW before long.

    i like it too.
of course the battle ai is kinda lowsy and ii read that its much better in napoleon.
for more of a challenge everyone is recommending darthmod.
it adds new graphics, new marches, new ai, corrects many bugs, more nations , etc.
like lannik says - turn coal into a diamond.
i have downloaded it but havent installed it yet.
some say its better than napoleon:tw ai-wise
