Hi, Im quite suspicious of this card it says on notebook review that it can get 132FPS on high on the sims 3... Thats higher than my 260M D:

Im thinking of getting a inspiron N5010 see and it has one of these cards in it
I dont game too much but sims 3 will prolly be the most demanding game i would play on there anyway

Also what are the temps on this laptop if you own one?

132fps? i dont think so, but I got 40-50fps on sims 3 all maxed with my 4670m, which nets about the same performance as the 5650m

Notebookcheck's tests for Sims 3 are... mysterious. Gf has a 5650m in her lappy and frame rate fluctuates wildly between 35-60fps on max.

For the newer cards you need a 6770M or higher to go beyond 260M levels.

Heh, i doubt ill be able to get anything better than a GTX 260M then for the price, Suits all my needs for gaming and most laptops will give me over 2h 30m just browsing the web.

several AMD tests from notebookcheck are mysterious. For example I saw a 5870m being beaten by a gt 330m

yeah... some of the tests are kinda iffy and/or may be at weird resolutions or on low settings.

or use outdated drivers, incoherent testing procedures and so forth

Im not against notebookcheck, the problem is the reliability of those tests that they do, so use it as a rough metter of what you are going to get. Dont use it as a gospel

I have a 5650m and I think it should be OK if all you want to play is the sims 3. It doesn't have much memory bandwidth so it really can struggle with some games at 1080P or higher (even older source engine games like TF2).

The thing about the 5650 is that 1) it is quite power-efficient compared to Nvidia counterparts, and 2) it overclocks like a champ.

I can push my 5650 from 500/800 all the way to 715/1040 (and quite a bit higher too if I want, this is just software limitation); it's been like that for the past year or so and the overclocking really makes a huge difference in framerate.

I could never get my 5650 past about 970 for the memory speed. For some reason I could push the core all the way to 800, but as the memory bandwidth is the biggest problem this didn't help that much.

well I can't push my memory past 800mhz (stock) so...yeah. Outta luck with some games at 1600x900

You sure it's not undervolted? That sounds screwed up (not being able to push past stock clocks). Also, maybe you are OCing the core clock too much and that's causing the card to crash despite little to no increase in mem clocks?

Yea but 5650 is a little TOO underpowered. I would like to see GTX 560 Ti level gaming power in sub $1000 laptops. That will make my day.

First-gen Envy 14's got underclocked 5650's, most of which don't seem to overclock well. I tried overclocking mine to 500 I think (from 450) and got an immediate crash in FEAR, and the chip deteriorated over the next couple months to where it couldn't play Half Life 2 at its base 450 clock without crashing. I'm not sure if there was a connection between the overclocking attempt and the deterioration, but even though I got the MoBo replaced a couple months ago and have a new GPU in there, I'm not gonna try that again.

Bottom line: Envy 14 5650's suck.
