Just trying to get some opinions on this GPU. I am looking at the Sager 5797 that comes with the 280M vs the OCZ whitebook with the single or dual HD3870s.

At the moment I can't afford the dual cards and the Sager is cheaper. According to this site the 280M scored just below the dual cards and I'm guessing it would score above a single HD3870.

Anyone have hands on experience yet?

Apparently, the site I referenced has some skewed data based on the search I just performed here for the 280M. So definitely would like to hear some real world experience before making my purchase.

From what I know the dual Mobility 3870s will have far higher synthetic benchmarks (3DMark06, Vantage, etc.) however in real games this might be tottaly differant, I can almost gaurntee you the GTX 280m will get far higher FPS in Crysis and Crysis Warhead.

I don't care anything about synthetic benchmarks and getting higher scores to post on the forums. I just care about real world performance and FPS. I will primarily be playing WoW, but I may have to try out Crysis since everyone seems to love that game.

The 5797 with the 280M is about the same price as the OCZ with the single GPU and it weighs a good amount less.

The OCZ will have better results as drivers evolve.
Also, note, the 579x has a loud cooling system. Had one, I know.

I read that the 5793 was loud, but I thought the 5797 was not as loud. I can handle the fan, but I can just picture my wifes face when the fans kick in and she is trying to watch tv

lol the 280m gtx will run better in games , its proably a good bet but the ocz Whitebook is saposed to be getting 4870's so it will run faster then the 280m if that happens.

To answer your question, there are no 280M equipped notebooks out yet, so no one will have any data for you.

If you can find any desktop benchmarks for the 9800 GT, know that it'll be faster than that.

Will let you know whenever it comes.. ;)

Wish notebookcheck said more about Crysis than they did with the m980nu review. Got 11700 on 3dmark06 with a stock x9100 and stock clocks if it means anything.

Yes I have used a GTX 280m in what was called my desktop 8800GTX :) Good card even today but there is better out there. This GTX 280m Yawn yawn is basically a desktop 8800GTX though far less wide bus.

Well there are desktop cards that are far more similar in architecture. The desktop 9800 GTX is very close to the GTX 280m, however the GTX 280m has the 55nm G92b chip (same as desktop 9800 GTX+ chip).

It's essentially an underclocked 250 GTS, which is a 1GB version of the 9800 GTX+ but on a smaller board. It's not a bad "budget" card for the desktop, and makes for a pretty nice laptop card. Wonder how it overclocks...

wow, the GT 250 benchmarks from Crysis Warhead are impressive to say the least. It even got above the desktop 4850. So I'm guessing the Crysis Warhead FPS of the GTX 280m should be around the desktop 4850. I was surprised by the difference between the 1GB version to the 512mb version, I'm happy the GTX 280m has 1GB!

Heavily overclocked you may get close to the desktop cards but it'd be impossible to match.

Comparing the 280M and GTS 250..

    585/1463/950

    738/1836/1100

    Maybe 650/1600/1050? We'll see...

I definitely believe 9800 GTX clocks are within reach.

    That'd be 675/1688/1100.

G92b is a core capable of heavy overclocks, and Clevos handle heat like no other. It's a good combo for this chip.

I have never had any hardware capable of overclocking so I don't know much about it. Seems like people are obsessed with overclocking to hit benchmarks and FPS. Will the stock settings not give you an enjoyable gaming experience?

anothergeek- can you let me know what you think of the 5797 when you get it? I'm hesitant to pull the trigger on that vs the whitebook because of the screen issues, fan noise and relatively untested GPU.
