    I doubt its free, the downloads on the web are the cache files only so yes you can install it but it will still prompt you to enter a valid key to be able to play online

    It isn't free, it's just that every other valve retail product lets you get 1.6 free (Blue Shift does, DoD retail does, Halflife does, TFC/TF1.5 retail does).

    if you have source, I thought that automatically gives you 1.6. My cousin bought half life 2 and got both counter strike's.

    How lol. I have a copy of Half life 2 and I only get Half life 2 and Counter strike source, plus the usual hl2 deathmatch and localcoast

    It depends of the package you buy, you can buy a package with all source games and there are other variations. I bought HL2 with CS:S and 1.6 in one but my friend just got CS:S, it depends on the promotions but I am sure you can't get 1.6 free just like that.

    you can't play online by simply exchanging game files without valid account. you can however download games via steam free of charge if your account has ownership of the games.

    My advice would be keep the CSS , as you will have to change accounts to swap it with a CS 1.6.

    Go out and buy CS 1.6 or the normal Half life, costs about 5 euros or something really cheap like that

    Seen it in Media Markt (I am in Brussels atm) forgot to check the price, but it was definitely there. I am going there today again to see if they got new laptops, will check the price.

    Good, source is much better then 1.6 in my opinion and has many more users. The mods are also great, love zombie mod and gun mod, the maps are also very fun.

    BTW went and checked, CS 1.6 + CS condition zero for about 15 euros which is pretty expensive lol
