Long story short, I've cancelled my current laptop's order, I'm waiting for the refund to reach my bank account and until then I'm contemplating on ordering a Clevo.

I wanted to ask first, though - does anyone know if there's a new technology around the corner? A new video card revision, a new CPU, something that is worth waiting for a month or two (or three)? Or is it completely 'safe' to just order in the next few weeks?

    Thanks in advance.

Nope. All the refreshes (IVB/Trinity/28nm GPUs) just came out a couple months ago and the next refreshes are due in 8-9 months maybe. We're at the beginning of the refresh cycle, so it's a pretty good time to buy right now.

I would say the same, I just bought my new desktop for the office, and new laptops for the kids, now is a great time to buy if you want something that lasts for a little while!

Yup if you don't have anything in mind regarding the specs of that Clevo, I'd suggest posting in the " What notebook should I buy" section soon.

    Thanks for the answers :)

Yeah, I know what I'm going with, I just wanted to make sure there isn't anything I'm about to miss, like a 7990M or something.

You could certainly be about to miss a 7990. We might not have much notice for that. Parts based off of new architectures like haswell CPUs and the AMD 8000 series won't be here till next year.

There is always something around the corner. Set your budget and get the best you can get for your needs within it.

Coming to these forums all the time with the attitude of keeping up with the Jones's will put you in a constant state of need and regret. Forget that tactic, get what you can and game!

Yeah, you can't really catch up with the amazingly fast progress in hardware, that's for sure..

That being said, it would definitely suck to buy something just to have the next big thing coming out a few days later, is all.

Now would be a good time to buy imo. We've had both a CPU and a GPU process improvement a few months ago and by now the notebook offer with updated tech to choose from is pretty decent. Technology and innovation are always in motion but we've had a nice performance bump the like of which we hadn't seen in a while, and likely won't see for a while.

680m is the fastest GPU you can buy. 7970m is a close second, but at about $300 cheaper usually. It's as fast as last gen top end GPU's in SLI, but running cooler and significantly less power. In 3-6 months there will be something new out, I guarantee that. Likely nothing earth shattering compared with these GPU's though because these are 28nm tech and there will likely be marginal improvements over the next couple iterations, on the order of likely 20-25% not 100% like this time. So you can wait 3 months and buy or buy today and enjoy.

^Thanks for the info. I've been waiting it out for a new laptop so it's good to know that nothing big is coming out anytime soon.

Of course nobody knows for sure. Some big upgrade could come out by AMD or nVidia in 2-3 months. At the moment though, the 680m is signicantly faster, it's high end desktop level performance especially if you overclock.
