I just got a new dv5t about 2 weeks ago. I am a little worried since ive been getting blue screens due to "graphics driver failed".
Whenever im playing some video games, sometimes the game starts to seem very laggy. I check the cpu usage and one of the cores is up to 80-90% capacity while the other one is normal. I can continue playing but its very laggy, cpu usage remains at 80-90% the whole time if i continue to play.
Other times, while im playing, the screen goes black entirely. It comes back a few seconds later running normally, and a little bubble pops up from the tray saying "Display driver has stopped working and has recovered successfully". Sometimes when it goes black it doesnt recover at all and goes BSOD.
Just wondering if it really is just a grphics driver problem or could it actually be a defective GPU. im a little worried, i just got this laptop.

Contact HP but I say there is something really wrong with your gpu. You could try updating your drivers and see if that helps. But I suggest you call HP and see what they say.
-
I agree with Halo360Fan. The display driver error message I have gotten as well (and my GPU works fine), and is caused by drivers. So check with some other drivers and see if you stop getting those errors. Otherwise, HP should fixthat.
-
ive already tried hps recommended drivers from their support site. some laptopvideo2go ones as well and an xtremeforce one too. they all have the same problems....
-
then your option is to call HP and see if they can determine if its a gpu failure. Call them and see.

im going to college in 3 days and this is my first laptop ever...*** am i going to do!!!! do you think i can use my dorm address and manage my repairs from there or do i have to use the address they shipped to?
this is a monstrous pain in the *** -
I bet its a pain but you have to ask them those question because I'm not sure if anyone knows. HP should be able to answer your questions!

there might bee dust in your laptop. my laptop kept getting bsod and i found that my fan was caked in dust and after i cleaned it out i stopped getting the bsod.

So i talked to the hp tech support dude. After spending an hour going through some stuff which didnt work, they finally told me that i would have to send in my laptop to see whats wrong....
they still say its a driver issue though.. i really dont want to send it in cuz im going to college next week... Since i just got the laptop, is it a good idea to hold off on sending it in cuz the warranty lasts a whole year and the date it expires is Aug. 2009. i want to try to hold off on it until next summer or until something really wrongs happens. is that a good idea??? -
lol bad idea, they may be geeks but the can void your warranty, you basically have to contact hp, its hardware, if driver updates are not working. btw whats the core temp like?
-
lol?
btw would a clean install be a reason why im having these problems?
core temps around 50C idle and 80-85C while gaming. these are for the GPU btw
btw theres something odd going on when i game (2moons) one of the cpu cores is constantly between 70-90% usage while the other one remains normal between 0-20%. *** is going on here. that seems pretty odd -
There is nothing wrong with your laptop, the bubble you see is Vista telling you it restarted the video driver after an infinite loop error. This happens often especially gaming on laptops. Games are hard on desktops so they can be even more punishing to laptops. I have already burned out a cooling fan on a Toshiba X200 playing Mass Effect. The video driver reset happens, it is not serious. I get them alot cause I like to try out the laptopvideo2go beta drivers. Consider yourself lucky, with XP the same issue causes a BSoD every time. lol
Oh and if the game you are playing does not support dual core, one core will always take the bulk of the games activity. -
You may just have to tough it out not having a laptop for a few days of college. Its better to send it in now as all your classes are easy than later in the semester when you have homework/quizzes/tests to worry about.

First thing I would try is a clean install.
But before that, have you tried using driver cleaner pro after uninstalling your drivers? If not try that first, if that fails do a clean install, and if that still doesn't work you're gonna have to tough it out a few days without your laptop. -

Instead of doing a clean install you can use a small software program called " Driver Cleaner" which costs $10 and will remove all traces of a display driver on your system.
I used it when it was free and it seemed to work very well.
Then you can install fresh drivers, I would probably recommend that you use your manufacturer's recommended drivers. -
Or you can use the freeware version and not pay $10. From here

i did a clean install as soon as i got my laptop, so i dont think thats an issue. unless the clean install actually messed something up
Anything wrong with my graphics card?
