Well, I get temperatures of about 68 to 70 C while doing practically nothing but surfing the net. Hits about 78 C while on load...but I've seen my maximum temperature hit 85 C. When I overclock my GPU to 575/900, it averages at about 82 C while on load, and hit a maximum of 87 C. Should I be very very worried about my system? (I should, shouldn't I? :()

    What laptop/GPU?

Dont OC any further than 85c just to be safe. Its recommended to try stay below 80c

Yes it really depends on your laptop and GPU...

How long have you had it? Maybe you havent been cleaning it regularly?

If your using vista, make sure you are on powersaver mode when doing lightweight tasks such as watching vids / browsing the net. During gaming switch to highperformance mode.

If on xp, make sure powermizer is enabled in nvidia control panel and working.

Also some drivers are known to increase the gpu temp, two of them are 174.53 and 174.74 I think.

Cleaning your laptop also helps, try blowing compressed air into the place where the heat comes out from.

Also keep the laptop elevated by putting an object such as a dvd case underneath the backside when using it on a table or some other surface

Thanks for the help, but yes, powermizer is enabled. I'm using 169.04 drivers, but I noticed my temperature was already this high before even touching them. I know cleaning helps, but seriously this laptop's brand new out of the box. It's still clean inside. It's evalated too with two books, although after monitoring it for a few hours yesterday it didn't seem to change a thing.

check using gpuz or rivatuner if the clocks of gpu when browsing web are low or the defaults..if the max defaults then powermizer ist working properly.

what are you using to monitor temps..some programs give temp of 10 degrees higher

your laptop could also have a problem with cooling system

    OR

I dont own a macbook but perhaps bootcamp might cause higher temps, have you checked the temps in macosx? Since macs are pretty thin they get hotter inside, compare your idle temps with other mbp owners.

I'm using ATITool 2.6. It automatically downclocks itself when I'm not running 3D games. Well, anyway I boosted the fan speed to 4000rpm, GPU temperature is currently idling at 60 C. Read around in other Mac forums and 70 - 80 C is quite common. Well, I'll probably buy a notebook cooler soon then use it whenever I'm overclocking. :)

Anything below 85C is pretty much ok IF you clean your laptop on a regular basis, and reapply AS5 every few months.

Alright. Haha Crysis averaged at 80 - 82 C on overclocked settings, peaked at 84. No cooler, but boosted fan speeds. :) What's AS5 btw?

Arctic Silver 5 . It`s a thermal compound which when used on certain areas of the laptop, between the heatspreader and the heatskink and such will help disipate heat faster resulting in lower temps and less fan noise.
    Highly recommended!

What I meant is that you apply it between the heatsink and heatspreader.
Glad you mentioned it , I`ll edit my post.

AS5 isnt the ideal solution as it will definately void his warranty and isnt easy to do. He just got his macbook, i wouldnt recommend this method or cleaning the fans just yet.

Try a laptop cooler first, that should help by 5c cooler
