Run at bare minimum, or run well? ;)

Almost all pre-2004~2005 games should run at minimum settings.

I'm being specific, would Starcraft and System Shock 2 both work? If so, that's pretty much all I'd need.

EeeUser.com forums and wiki have many games that are confirmed working, as well as fixes to get some games that are stubborn to play. There are a few driver hacks out there that trick games into playing that don't work with the EeePC's smaller resolution.

The game that plays the best for me is Half-Life (original) and all its expansions. Very smooth playback.

Man, I went to a store and picked up an EEE with the 7inch screen. I swear, that thing is just too cute to be a laptop. But They might`ve made the screen bigger and put the speakers somewhere else...

I know about the 9 inch version, but it`s the same crap.
Put in an Atom CPU or ULV core duo , a 20 gb flash disk and 2 gb of ram,and you`ve got the best ultraportable that helps pick up chicks :D
Not like the one in Nirvana`s avatar, but still :D

If you're into the classics, I'd be willing to bet that the EEE could probably run emulators.

I have run LOTS of games on mine:

    Age of Empires 2
    Aliens vs. Predator 2
    Battlefield 1942
    Civilization 2
    Comanche 4
    C&C Generals + Zero Hour
    Counter Strike 1.6
    Descent Freespace 2
    Far Cry
    Half-Life 1
    Independence War 2
    Joint Operations
    Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed
    No One Lives Forever 2
    Operation Flashpoint
    Raven Shield
    Return to Catle Wolfenstein
    TrackMania Nations Forever
    Warcraft 3

Many are on my 16GB SD card, but other larger ones are installed on my external WD Passport HDD. Remarkably most of the games support the odd 800x480 widescreen resolution through some sort of hack.

Just keep in mind that the Eee is a 900MHz Celeron (runs @ 630 stock, but 4G and 8G versions easily softwar O/C'd to 900MHz+) and Intel GMA 900. Newer Eee versions out soon with the 9" screen will possibly have the GMA 950, and run stock at 900MHz instead of 630MHz, with an Atom CPU being added later (more energy efficient and probably more powerful). You can pretty much run anything released 2004 and prior without a lot of issue.

I've seen mods where they install one or two internal USB ports with power on/off switch and install a couple 16GB or 32GB USB thumb drives for massive amounts of storage, and can be turned off to conserve energy. I'd like to do that, but I'm all thumbs when it comes to soldering those tiny connections.

Starcraft might run ok but it will be hard to play with a touchpad and a small screen. I would stick with SNES emulators or something since they only require a few keys usually to play, anything like final fantasy ect that is turn based so you dont need to worry about the small keys hampering you.

I use a VX Nano mouse with mine. Works awesome. Touchpads are useless for gaming IMHO.

MAME games work great too actually.

Looks like Zhang Ziyi to me, I could be wrong though. Maybe nirvana can enlighten us.

Back on topic: I assume playing C&C Generals is possible on something as small as the EEE PC.

No-CD patches? Don't they work on something like EEE PCs. Don't know much about the stripped-down specs though.

It`s not Zhang Ziyi , she doesn`t fit the profile.
Just as the EEE PC doesn`t fit the whole gaming laptop thingy. You might as well play catch with it.

Yes, no-CD patches or a mini CD image and mounted using Daemon Tools. Works beautifully.

I'm surprised how much I can actually fit on a 16GB SD card. Forgot how all these "old" games were like 200-600MB each.

Yes Starcraft works fine. Most all games work fine. It's a basic laptop, no reason it wouldn't. Only limiting factor is the maximum 64MB allocated video RAM. Although there are hacked drivers that allow use of 128MB. But in most cases for most games that will run on this thing only require 64MB anyhow.

Just don't expect max details on anything. Usually minimum detail and in some cases medium work fine. Usually require overclock to 900MHz too, but that's fine. And expect to do a little manipulation to get things installed, like mapping your desktop or laptop's CD/DVD drive with a drive letter on the Eee to install stuff, use hacked drivers to run at 640x480 (yes Intel drivers do not support this res, believe it or not!), or to run at its native 800x480.

My friend put an extra 8M Stick of Ram in his, and the improvement was incredible. He even managed to get minesweeper running at a playable 8fps, even at 320 x 256 (or so he claims !) :D

Here's a question about the EEEPC - how do you install software without a CD drives? I see it comes with the CDs but no drive.

    1. Make iso with your "normal" computer
    2. Transfer it either onto your laptops HD or onto a portable media (Like USB Stick)
    3. Get the installer for either Daemon Tools (theres a better one that I use but I don't remember the name of it at the moment.. just remember the cow...)
    4. Mount the image with Daemon Tools and its as if you had the disk sitting in an external cd drive (which is another option).

You will find that the iso's are remarkably faster than the actual cd's most of the time.

You might want to find No-CD hacks for any of the game you use.. so that you don't have to leave that iso mounted when you want to play (and thus have it take up space)

Try Deus Ex. It's requirements are probably low enough, and you won't be disappointed (It's my all time favorite).
