So I have asked this in the "Can my notebook run it.." thread but as I never get a response there I figured I would post this here, since other people might have asked them self a similiar question.
So I really enjoyed OFP back in the day.
And I would like to play it again, I was just wondering if OFP2 or Arma2 would run fine in High settings on my computer, or if I shouldnt bother getting either of them and go with Arma, or since (from what I heard) Arma blows so hard that I should go just with the classic OFP and a few mods.
Any ideas would be welcome!
I would like to try the new games with High-Medium Settings and no Shadows, anything closer to low and I wont be bothering getting those games.
Cheers

Maybe try the ECP mod for OpFlash. I heard about it but never tried it. -
I think you might not get many replies because people know less about the performance of ATI cards when compared to Nvidia ones.
I looked up your card details and judging from the specs, I think you will have problems running Arma 2. According to the info it is a 128 Bit card too.
As an example, I run Arma 2 on my laptop and I get about 29-35 fps with a mixture of normal and high with it occasionally dropping down to 20 fps and I have a GTX 260M which is a 256 bit card.
I recommend you either play Arma with the ACE Mod or OFP again with the ECP Mod. Some say that those mods make it an entirely new game. -

Chrusti, I play arma2. I have a M17 with hd 3870 xfire. I can tell you that the game is very very hardware intensive. I bet you will be able to play it on low settings. I am trying to switch back and forth between the campaign in ARMA2 and OFP-DR. I like the fluidness of Flashpoint-DR. It is an absolute blast so far. ARMA2 has great visuals but it stinks when you get into a fire fight and your fps tanks 25 to 30 percent. ARMA1 runs great on my machine and I bet it will run on yours. Lots of missions for it. Dynamic campaigns which are good because they change each time you play.
I hope you get what you are looking for. Flashpoint DR will play nicely on your rig... The only downfall as others had mentioned is the 128bit memory bus on the 4670. so to summarize...
Arma1 - old but will run good on your machine, lots of missions and campaigns for it.
Arma 2 - good visuals but will not play too well.
Operation Flashpoint DR - good visuals, great optimization (graphics), NEW!!!
Good Luck,
StevenX -
ARMA 1 would be a great try for you. With the graphics cranked, it still looks bloody great. Heaps of player made content for it as well. ARMA2 brought my brothers PC too its knees. His computers a tiny little bit slower than my Dell XPS M1730. Hope this helps a little bit.

Thank you! Well I will try both OFP and Arma1
will report back~ -

Chrusti, forgot to add.. dont confuse the old operation flashpoint with the new operation flashpoint - Dragon Rising. I have played both. Your XPS will play the new Operation Flashpoint - Dragon Rising just fine. You can play the old one as well. I have both and the old one has great AI. Enemies will flank you and all kinds of stuff. ARMA 1 is probably the best of both worlds (between the old operation flashpoint and ARMA 2). It has good AI plus pretty good graphics.
If I had to choose I would say
Get the new Operation Flashpoint, Dragon Rising
and Get ARMA1.
Hope this helps!

I just deinstalled Operation Flashpoint Goty (old one) and FFUR 1985 Mod.
The games Graphics was worse than Half Life 1 (I guess I got spoiled meanwhile by FarCry2 and Bioshock)
It was stuttering worse than Crysis.
And the loading times were unbearable.
I guess that game is just too old now. Too bad, back in the day it was a lot of fun.
I will try Arma next..
From what I have heard Operation FLashpoint Dragon Raising is a pretty neat game, so I might try that one too! ^,^! -
I just installed and Patched Arma: Armed Assault.
It looks and plays just great, much better than Operation Flashpoint!
I will install some mods next! So far this is my favorite!
-
I also got stuttering in the original Operation Flashoint and that improved when I lowered the view distance a little and tested out config for the other graphic settings. Even though that is an old game, the view distance can bring a high end system to its knees. Dragon sinking was one of the worst recent titles I had ever tried.

Well so far I like Armed Assault, its quite fun! and the graphics arent that bad (like battlefield 2 I guess.)
I will download the newest patch and a few mods for it now! I want more tanks ^,^!! -
Armed Assault 2 has two distinct advantages for you over Operation Flashpoint - Dragon Rising:
1. Arma2 loves ati cards, especially from the 4xxx generation
2. Arma2 is the much better game -
hehe well I am pretty pleased with Arma1 so far! it looks not bad, and I got 3 GB worth of Addons installed! that will keep me busy for a while.
Also, without AA I get Solid 30+ FPS (Everything at HIGH-Very High except for shadows) -
I find Arma the best compromise between decent graphics and really good performance. I can't get anymore than 35 fps with lows of 15 fps occasionally with Arma 2 but in Arma 1 with the ACE Mod, my fps at a mixture of high settings and normal I get from 35, 40 - 60 fps with no low frame rate occurrences.

ARMA 2 is too hardware intensive for my laptop. My copy is getting sold on Ebay. ARMA 1 and Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising are the two poisons for the m17 right now. ARMA 2 I can run it at 30 fps but it drops to mid teens at the first sign of a firefight. It is a good game but the optimization needs some serious help. StevenX
Arma - Arma 2 - Operationflashpoint 2 or better Operation Flashpoint?
