I was wondering if anyone has Arma 2? if so whats it like, i have seen some really good videos and pics of it which make me want to buy it - but reading on the games forums i have read that many people have had trouble with it from poor performance too game crashes

    does anyone else experience this?

    my setup:
    Q6600
    3gb ram
    8800m GTX

would this be able to run the game well? what kinda setting would i be looking at? max?

I'm just gonna wait for OPF2, might be a better, more refined game than Arma2.

Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising, it's made by the same people as ArmA2.

I enjoy ARMA2, but be warn its a SIM, not a FPS. Do not expect to go out and headshot every guy you encounter, do not expect to be a "army of one" and do not expect to set this game to the highest settings (this thing make Crysis look tame). As for bugs, there are a few (expect mission objectives to finish out of the blue and expect some strange reactions from the AI), but the thing that annoys me the most is the radio chatter.

I had a hard time getting into the game, but one day I just sat down to show a friend how to play this since he was having a hard time and I got sucked in. I had been screwing around so much in the game that I figured out the (overly) complex control scheme and went to town. One thing that you should note is that the back where you carry your gear works more like a bag from an MMO where gear is different sized thus takes up more or less space and may slow you down or prevent you from finishing certain mission objectives.

That's incorrect. ArmA 2 is made by Bohemia Interactive which were the original creatures of the first few Operation Flashpoint series, while the new Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising is made by Codemasters who now own the title to the Flashpoint series. ArmA 2 is a military simulation, while Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising is more of an arcade game with a little bit of reality.

Totally depends on your taste, if you enjoy COD and BF series very much, then you probably won't like this "sim" at all. Just download the demo and try it out yourself, and see how you like the actual game mechanic.

For me, the more I play ARMA II the more I hate it... lol... and this comes from a guy who enjoys complicated flight simulators very much

Anyway, here are some things I hate:

    * Bugs - even with latest patch, you can still notice them, but it will get better as developers continue to fix them. Performance dip, freezes, crashes should be expected. I'm not getting good performance on my desktop with q6600, 9800GT, 4GB RAM with settings on normal/medium.

    * Keyboard mapping - you'd think for a combat sim, the keyboard mapping would be extensive, but sadly not so. e.g. you cannot even individually change the y-pitch for each vehicle/aircraft, like you can in BF2, which drives me nuts when I try to fly helis and fighters with the mouse.

    * Audio - Voice overs in the game is pathetic, especially the voice commands, you probably noticed this on YouTube videos.

    * Complicated controls to do simple things - Granted, it's a Sim, the control is supposed to be more complicated than your average FPS. But why do we need an extra, dedicated key for step over a fence? Can't there be a universal key that is context sensitive to do all these trivial actions?

    * Realism - Questionable realism in some aspects. Flight models of the helicopters and jets leave something to be desired, maybe I'm already used to flight sim flight dynamics. Hummer continues to explode even after it's completely burned down, maybe a bug. There's no indoor fighting, at least I haven't experienced yet, most of the buildings in the game are static objects, doors cannot be opened, you can't go inside to hide.

    Anyways, sorry for the rant.

One more thing, don't let your AI drive the car!

i was thinking about the demo, but i heard it doesnt really show what he full game is like as the map is smaller so that you can get better looking inj the demo but not as good in full game - but as for the gameplay i will try the dmeo and see what i think

Well the 9800GT is not a fast GPU today. You have a good CPU but the GPU is lacking that´s where the culprit is.

Wow people need to get real. On the consumer spectrum of hardware, the 9800GT is very top of the line, just check out the steam hardware surveys. The reality is that Arma II is an intense system hog both due to its a combination of its long view distance, fairly complex AI, and some suspect coding by Bohemia.

The game is coming out for the Xbox 360 fairly soon and if your very concerned about your system that might be the way to go (although the quality of the port is also suspect, so check the reviews).

Just to clear things up, Arma II and Operation Flashpoint 2 are made by completely DIFFERENT development teams. Op Flashpoint 2 will very likely be a realistic shooter by console standards but no where near the attempted battle simulation that Arma is(but by no means does that make it arcade like).
