It is possible. Check out the BIOS release notes, if there is an update regarding this ATI GPU.
IMO, the 8600M GT and the HD 3650 are very similar in performance. Its better to stick with the 8600M you've got.

If you want to upgrade, look for a 9600M GT GDDR3, whose compatibility with your BIOS is also unknown.

To replace the 8600M GT DDR2 with the HD 3650 isn't worth the effort (or money). I'd stick with the 8600.

Other people were making it sound like a ddr2 to ddr3 upgrade was worth it. Is this really not the case?

EDIT: Also, is anyone aware if the 9650m gt will become available for mxm II? Would it be better to wait for that?

I don't think the Mobility Radeon HD 3650 has GDDR3.
    I think it's memory is GDDR2.
Still, even with Radeon HD 3650 GDDR2 it's better than 8600m GT and of course you might avoid potential issues with 8600mGT due to it potentially waiting to drop dead as virtually all of those gpu's were affected by the problem of being built out of inefficient/old parts.

HD 3650 GDDR3 is still not worth it, considering the cost. You'll notice a slight boost in gaming performance, and a significant difference in 3DMark scores.

Wait for a 9650M GT/9600M GT (GDDR3) to be available on fleabay, those cards are much better.

And you'll have to flash the Acer BIOS onto it, and the card's compatibility with the BIOS is unknown.

Plus, if your notebook is under warranty, you won't void the warranty, but the upgraded GPU won't be covered, and it will be a better idea to keep the old GPU with you, and not try to sell it to offset the cost of the upgrade.

Try to buy 9600M GT card. Otherwise you are wasting money for nothing

9600M GT would be my recommendation as well if it's possible.
