So I've never played this game and now that the movie will soon be released, I feel that I missed the Assasin's Creed Bandwagon

Do I need to buy/play them all in order to understand what the duck is going on or can I just play the latest?

Which one is the latest anyway?

Latest would be the Syndicate. Though it's not the best one. Crap story and characters set in a typical Ubi sandbox, meaning a big empty world with repetitive missions and craploads of useless collectibles. Surprisingly I did enjoy the gameplay, but it's because I tend to like stealthy games, but that's about it.

Personally for me Buttbuttin's Creed started and ended with AC II, so I always recommend that. Sure it's somewhat old now, and it doesn't look very shiny, but for me it's the best in series, at least from the ones I've played (I, II, Brotherhood, III, Unity, and Syndicate).

I did kinda enjoy Unity's, despite it being known as a buggy game. I've played it a year after release, so by that time it was fixed. It had an intresting Templar/Assassin dilemma between main characters, and main assassination missions were unrestricted (meaning you are dropped into a mission area with a few points of interest, and the rest is up to you. Syndicate had that also). Combat was a bit slow and clunky, so there's that. Oh, and of course the memes.

A lot of people recommend AC IV, but I' haven't played that, so I can't say anything about it. But if you like pirating theme (not to be confused with software pirating), it's supposed to be good.

As for continuity, from AC I to AC III they had a sort of continuous modern day story going, but later they scrapped that. Just left the general Templars vs Assassins thing. I missed a few games, but I never felt like I had to go back and play the games. But to be honest I never felt invested in AC story, but if you do get interested, and wonder what is what, there's nothing spending a few minutes and AC Wikia can't fix.

Personally, I think it is generally meh as a series. It had potential but the story is bad (imo, obviously) and the retconned elements that added supernatural elements were toned to a different tuned that was worse.

I am not sure how far the story was developed, but I do know that at least Assassin's cred 1, through 3, are directly connected and continue the plot. Bear in mind, that Assasin's creed 2 is actually a trilogy, so we are talking about 5 games here.

I am not sure if black flag, unity and syndicate follow the main story at all.

You don't need to play previous games to understand current events in each game, but you do need to in order to understand the main story and the events happening outside the game's timeframe (meaning, Desmond's story). You could say that each AC has a unique inside story, while also advancing an overall main plot outside.

Personally, I dropped it with AC2 and never played 3 and onwards, except syndicate. They are fairly repetitive in nature but the one that feels tremendously repetitive is the very first one.

Found all of them Meh at best.
Syndicate was appealing in the begining, and then came the repetitiveness.

Thanks all, from these comments, I don't feel so tempted to go through hours of gameplay through all these series of games just to understand it.

I'll just watch the movie *if* it gets good reviews

Which means, you won't be watching it :)

Seriously, there hasn't been a good video game movie ever. And Mortal Kombat doesn't count.

If you don't feel like playing this type of games, and the question is only about the movie, then no, you don't have to play, just read an article on wikipedia or something like that, it will be enough to understand the whole assassins vs templars thing.
However, as a huge fan of Prince of Persia trilogy (first 3 games of 3D reboot) I enjoyed the AC series, and even the very first one, for the parkour stuff. I forced myself at first (in AC1), but looking behind I don't regret playing it. It depends on how you play. I didn't go for 100% completion and only did tasks that were necessary to advance the story.
The second game is a huge improvement over the first one, I enjoyed both story and gameplay much more than in first game. I'm now halfway through Brotherhood (standalone expac for AC2) and it still feels good.
In other words, if you put your primary focus on the story, and not collecting everything on the map, you will probably enjoy the AC games, maybe even more than the movie :) Although I kind of agree with above said, it's not stellar, just "good" (imo, ofc)

AC is and was until the ACII and Brotherhood though the story continues to the ACIII and not overwhelmingly insane like the II but until III it's fine. From there it's waste & just for the gameplay, Also note that the AC Developer lead left Ubisoft and there it started the downfall of the AC going mainstream B$, Just like BioWare founders left and the company's lost it's valor in this competitive industry. But yeah we saw DOOM giving "hell of a heat" more than it's former self - IDTech and Rampaging through the FPS Action and won countless hearts !!

No idea about movie, Personally don't like any spoilers..

The first 2-3 games are great, I will be honest. The story is kinda meh as mentioned.

The series has been milked tho, and about the movie, I have no idea wtf they were thinking.

I have played all the games (expect the latest) and still sometime dont get what the duck is going on.
There are three story arcs in each game, the present day, the historical timepiece and the mythical fantasy over the top lore.
The first two are easy to get, but the last one can be tricky. But i feel it is the most vital element of the series.
If you want to play for lore (and want to keep the games limited) then, i suggest ACII, brothrehood and revalations and then maybe III.
If you want top play for Assasins creed type gamely then i would suggest AC brotherhood.
If you just want to have fun then play AC 4 (Black flag). Its strange that the most fun i had in the series is being a pirate. After all "nothing is true everything is permitted" as per the creed code.

OR if you want to just learn about the story/lore, i can give you a brief run down.

EDIT: "AC Syndicate" is the latest.

These video game movies are never made for people who actually play the game. They always change the things to make it more suitable for mass audience.

I still remember when they first announced the resident evil movie, I was really exited. But when the movie came out, it was so far from the games that it never felt like a RE movie. Then came Tomb Raider and the same thing happened. After that i realized that these are just regular movies with video game Easter eggs.

It really boggles my mind that these game series have so much material and lore available but when they decide to make the movie, they throw all of it out of the window and make a generic a$$ movie and slap video game name onto it.

The only video game movie that respected source material little bit was Doom, but unfortunately this was a series which needed some innovation in terms of lore because Doom is pretty weak in terms of it.

Resident Evil movies are special. They steal lore and characters from the games but they do whatever they want with them. On top of if, the world keeps ending and in peril since the 3rd movie, and we are at number 6 now right? Each movie feels like something unrelated to the previous ones despite being direct continuations!

Such a bad bunch of movies ha.

Yes. And to be honest, its not even about the movie being good or bad, its just that they completely ignore the the game story line. Heck even RE Degenration /Damnation are much better movies these main movies.

Just imgine if the next Harry potter movie is about a Harry Potter who is a western gunslinger and Harmione is damsel in distress under captivity of an evil bandit named voldermot.

Edit: And dont even get me started on how they turned Prince of Persia into a count of monte cristo / Lion King wannbe.

Yeah, I remember watching and thought it was pretty decent too. Although I was younger back then, so my judgment might have been clouded.

Actually one of my buddies went to see AC: The Movie, and he said it was pretty good. But he likes this sort of movies, so I guess that's the reason.

It's related but independent. I believe the characters, artifact and happenings are unique to the movie and related only by the artifact itself, as a part of the series's artifacts. Half of the movie is fassbender (with bad spanish accent) and company speaking spanish and repeating creepy/silly phrases and trying to look cool.

The movie deals with an apple of eden device that can control human's will/though, and reference it as a means to subdue people. Their goal was to "eliminate violence" but in reality the templars wanted to eliminate the assassin's creed brotherhood and subdue humankind.

I believe most happenings and characters are specific to the movie, with cameos appearing. The protagonist is a descendant to a spanish branch of assassin's, specifically Aguilar. He was the last known assassin in that timeline/event that ever last saw/held the apple of eden and thus they wanted the protagonist to find where he had hidden it.

The movie is horrendous, I just had a group of friends go in and watch it (I had an exam so I couldn't) the feedback was.. traumatisering.

Save the money, buy the game on the cheap when it is for sale instead.
