Ok, i bought assassins creed and i was wondering if there was a way to play it without the disc. For example, after installing, is there a way i can rip the disc to my hard drive and compress it into a mountable img/iso/bin/etc?

If a game has copy protection, you cannot play off a disc image unless you have a no disc / copy protection crack.
Not 100% sure if it is illegal to crack a game you own... I suspect that it is, thus this thread will probably be closed. -
I see, well if the above is true then this thread should go ahead and be closed then.

www.gamecopyworld.com is your friend.
If you own the game, you can download the no-cd crack and not trash the disks with multiple usage.
It`s what I always do. -
its perfectly alright to to use no cd cracks for games you own ,but not for ones you don't own
http://www.gamecopyworld.com/
EDIT: i see ive been beaten to it -
Thats a great site... been using it for a long time.
But I'm not sure that it is completely legal to use it even if you do own the game. I've never heard an official statement on that, only people who aren't qualified to make that statement. OTOH, I've never heard of anyone being sued for providing cracks.
It is just one of those gray areas that NBR may want to avoid having discussed on their boards. -
I don`t think it`s gray.
You own the game, you have the right not to kill the cds and dvds by constantly reading them.
A cd or dvd has limited # or reads and writes, so in case you keep messing with it it will eventually die,get scratched or heck, even lost.
The no-cd cracks are just as good as having the game from Steam. -
It's definitely a gray area. Using a no-CD crack is against the EULA, but then again, that part of the EULA may not be legally enforceable, so very gray area indeed.
-
I cant believe the site is still up, and importantly virus free
-
You may think you should have the right, but it does not make it so.
You cannot compare the no cd cracks to steam.
It's a gray area because at some point, reverse engineering of the code has taken place. Pretty sure thats illegal.
Though it does bring up a good question as to why sites have not been shut down that provide cracks. -
Nah, it's a gray area...
-
Fine,it`s purple
-
It certainly is legal to make a backup. It's just the cracks that are shady legally. -
Personally, I think if a serial number/license key is required to be entered during the install then a CD/DVD SHOULD NOT have to be in the drive in order to play!
That's my biggest beef with games. Games like UT3 have got it right. Steam is a different story because an internet connection is still required for authorization. -
but u cant play online with no-cd cracks anyways...so in a way they are pretty much useless....
If a game requires serial number to be entered than i also think like Signal2Noise above that the disc shuld not be required...i know many discs of mine that have been damaged due to this(PES 2008 the most recent one) now i am forced to use a no-cd for PES cuz my disc is unreadable -
Funny enough, I've actually had two games that required a CD crack in order to play. That was using a retail copy of the game... not a copied or pirated version.

im able to play my legally bought copy of call of duty 4 without the cd in the tray. i copied the disc to a mountable ISO using magicISO, mounted it to a virtual cd drive, and have never had a problem doing it that way.

I think we're going to close this thread...gray area...bad for forum.
