You won't hate Vista so much if you give it room to stretch its legs ;)

2GB is enough, but I like Vista with 4GB minimum. That's all really.
I'm sure it runs fine, but since I play mostly online games and assassian's creed was bad on PC, I see your options at either Far Cry 2 or RAM. And I love hardware too much to opt for a game I only care about a little bit.

Um, what? One could make the case that the game is bad on any system, but it's certainly better on the PC than on the console.

Go for whichever game you think you'll like the best, there's plenty of videos and reviews to give you some idea of which you'll get more enjoyment out of, and since you have two computers and your desktop already has 3GB of ram it wont really be worth it, for you, to upgrade the ram in your laptop.

I've gone from 2 to 3 gig in my laptop and while some games eat into it, it'll only really improve loading times, not the actual playability of the game.

    Get the RAM.

Especially if (as it sounds) you're only running yours in a single stick/single-channel mode right now.

2 GB is fine for playing games on a laptop. You'll be more bottlenecked by your GPU anyways.

I'd vote for Far Cry 2.

RAM. While Vista needs 2GB to run properly IMO, 4GB gives it wings. Especially now that some games are using up to 2GB of RAM themselves, such as GTA IV. You'll see an improvement in load times, a slightly increased frame rate, and an overall better gaming experience.

I hate console games but after playing assassian's creed on console I could not stand it on PC. It's all opinion of course, I was simply stating mine.

Misconception that comes from not understanding Vista's memory management. Vista only has about 400mb of "bloat"

I can play AC and FC2 med-high on my G2S pretty well with 2GB RAM on vista32. Im sure more RAM would help though.

Yep, agree. More ram would certainly help

But note that, lets say if you have 4gb of ram, vista plus 1-2 big programs and a number of smaller programs wont fill up the whole 4gb. I have 4gb on my laptop, even when running games, it only fills up to 55% of the whole ram.

So i think 3gb should be more than enough. But then again ... there is a performance increase when using 2 stick of ram of the same size ??? (ie 2 x 2gb stick as opposed to 1 x 2gb + 1 x 1gb) dont know ... hahaha

When using two sticks of ram with the same memory capacity and same speed they run in "dual channel" which combines their bus' to double memory bandwidth.
This will only show a noticable improvement where system ram is being accessed concistantly; most notable is with audio and video where playback(etc) can become "choppy" with large files, otherwise you'll have a decrease in "loading" times but it won't be as noticable.

Oh and yes 3GB is MORE than enough for games and general use :D

I guess you aren't an intel guy.
Intel P965 and up (including mobile versions) all support flex mode, which entails the first GB of the 2GB module and the 1GB module running in dual channel, and the last 1GB of the 2GB module running in single channel.

 My life has just become so much more complex :(

    "flex mode"
I'm gonna google it now :D But please feel free to impart your wisdom on those fortunate enough to stumble across your wisdom... Is it effective?

Take for instance a desktop board with four DIMM slots and dual channel.
You can run 3x1GB or 1x2GB and 1x1GB to get the same exact results, 2GB in dual channel mode, 1GB in single channel mode.

    Pretty neat stuff.

I know the link is for desktop boards, what is important is the theory. It applies to all chipsets P965 and up, PERHAPS SOME EARLIER, but if anything prior to the P965 I do not know of it.

    Awesome :)

Will we ever have benchmarks though? As in real life benchmarks?

So if it's P965 and up, this takes cars of DDR3... ie. my future desktop :)
