Does anyone know how well the Asus G51VX-RX05 runs GTA IV? I prefer not to overlock anything. Can any owners shed some light on how well it plays? In particular, what settings can I run it at to achieve 60ish FPS? If I can achieve 60 FPS at all.

    For reference, the Asus G51VX-RX05 has a 2.0GHz C2D and a GTX 260m.

Thank you very much in advance!

Notebookcheck.com says that the GTX 260m video card should definitely be able to play it

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-260M.14559.0.html

but the only drawback is the 2.00 GHz processor. You should still be able to play it at reasonable frame rates though. On low settings you'll hit around 57.9 FPS or less. Hope this helps!

GTA IV is extremely CPU hungry, you will be lucky to hit 30fps without a quad core

Why is 60FPS the new standard for some people? I think a constant 25-30 is fine, jesus what the hell more do you want.

He's right, though. Especially for a game like GTA IV you don't need 60 fps. As long as it never dips below 25 it's fine. You're low-end dual core will be an issue. You'll have to turn the number of cars way down. It's the only game I've needed my turbo (20% CPU overclock) on, and mine is 2.4 GHz stock.

This. I find that 25 - 30FPS is just fine for GTA IV, maybe not for MW2 or something, but GTA IV looks great like that, considering that the consoles run at about 23FPS.

Hell, if you have 60FPS, it feels like your car is driving really slow and the controls are like ultra responsive...

And OP, you'll find that the 2Ghz P7350 really just isn't enough for GTA IV. GTA IV eats dual cores for breakfast, so you would optimally want a quad core or a very high clocked dual, like a P9700, or a T9600, which you could probably upgrade to later on. You can't upgrade to the quad though, the G51VX-A1 was the only G51 that ever supported quad core processors.

60 FPS is what's usually recommended for most FPS (hee hee).

Games like GTA4 are perfectly playable at 25 and up.

What's a good price for a T9600 chip? I live in Canada. Is EBay a safe place to purchase a mobile processor or would I most likely encounter a lot of counterfeits?

Also, does GTA IV on the Xbox 360 really play at 23 fps?

Ebay will be fine, as long as the processor is OEM. ES chips are Engineering Samples, and therefore not really for general use. They are also technically stolen from Intel. T9600 should be around $200 - $400.

And it does play at around 23FPS, give or take a little bit depending on the onscreen activity. The fluctuation of the FPS is much lower though, because it is better optimized. Heavy action in Multiplayer is not pleasant.

Even when gta iv dips to 20 fps for me its still playable. i do like my fps games to average 60+ fps except for crysis. gta iv loves video memory and CPU power. you have enough vid mem but a cpu will help a lot. gta iv makes me wish i had a 1gb card.

Crysis is one of those exceptions. I generally like 60 FPS for my FPS games. With my reasonably powerful GPU and low resolution screen, I don't usually have problems doing it.

You can generally push it a little into the red zone, not too far though.

Crysis works well at lower fps because of the motion blur. Lack of motion blur is the reason some people are bothered by FPS in the 20-30 range, despite the fact our eyes only process about 23FPS.

I was hoping more games would start using and improving upon motion blur like Crysis', but I guess developers think it's too much system hogging for not enough visual gain.

Our eyes can see well over 23 fps but i think that argument has had enough.

Well, yes and no, but any further than that and we're getting into stuff that I guess the average gamer just doesn't care about.

What can I say, I'm a biologist, I'd want to know how my hardware processes stuff :D.

It should play GTA IV but like shadow said , u can get a T9600 and it should have no problems... for T9600 , u can find it on ebay but i would generally stay off that.. try amazon or newmegg.ca or tigerdirect.com... they should also have a T9600.. and seriously , 20++ FPS is more than enough... even for crysis...

20-30 fps is enough for GTA IV but when I played at frames above that, I found it a lot more enjoyable and much smoother.

Hi, ive played GTA IV and completed history mode, without oc anything, and it goes just fine, around 30 fps, no lag at all.

My settings are textures on high, and view distance low, still looking great.

I tried to play it with a T8100 and could not get it playable athough i was also lacking in video memory but the cpu was still struggling and at 100% usage most of the time. Lots of vidoe memory gefinitely helps. My desktop uses 890mb of its graphics memory when plaiyng the game.

I aim for 35-50 (40fps is where I usually settle) personally. I like to give myself some cushion just in case I run into something that'll bog me down-- smoke grenades and explosions in battlefield, for example.
