Anybody have any info on the 6950m? I was reading about the 6970m and how it's in short supply or having defects. I guess the defect rumors might be true, since they are supposed to be the same card just the 6950 slower clocked. I guess maybe that's why we haven't heard about it. Anybody know anything? dates, manufactures, ASus?

    Thanks

The 6970m is not havig any problems, for some reason Clevo/Sager resellers are saying that the card is having problems, but it is not. Dell is still selling the m17x r3 with a 6970m and it has absolutely no problems at all. Even those who have Sager/Clevo machines with the 6970m are not having any sorts of problems with the card.

Yeah, it is curious why Sager decided to drop 6970m cards. But even the Clevo rebuilders supposedly aren't getting any more shipments either, although they still have some in stock, but once gone, they're gone.

    No official word from anyone.

HD6950M uses the same exact GPU as the HD6970M...VBIOS, clocks, and/or VRAM would be the only difference.

If Clevo is having a problem with the HD6970M they're not going to fair better making a HD6950M....and if Clevo is having a problem with their HD6970M while Dell is not then it's likely not the AMD GPU that's at fault.

Unless there is a lot of failing GPU's at the bench, and Dell is willing to test and sort them all and Sager is not. Something just doesn't add up.

There's plenty of places on a graphics card where a fault can exist besides in the GPU.

Dell and Clevo use the same AMD GPU but manufacture different cards. If one company has a problem with their cards while the other doesn't, it should be suspected that the problem exists in the components that are different and not in the component that's shared.

Probably Dell can handle returns just because of their size. I really don't care about sager or why any retailer has decided not to offer the card anymore. Just want to know if the 6950 is going to be made available if so when? I guess no one knows which is weird first time I've seen a card announced and no information at all about it.

This is such a perfect set up to get a great priced notebook we can probably get a descent 17" for around $1300 with it, even though it's almost exactly the same as a 6970 so would suck if it didn't come out

Desktop 6950s can be made into 6970s, I wonder if we'll be able to do it with mobile ones as well?

Once again they'd be using the same GPU with the same stream processor count. As long as the HD6950M has GDDR5 there'd be nothing to unlock.

If an HD6990M comes out with 1120 SPU then you can hope a VBIOS flash will unlock SPU in the other HD6900M cards.

The 6950m is already out. I'm pretty sure you can get one from dell.

IMO its a better card. Its 75w. Go upgrade an Acer with that.

Link please I can't find anything. Yeah all you would have to do for the mobile one is just over clock 100mhz and it's the same card.

possible bad batch, doubt we would know anything for certain.

Still for apple and dell to continue to use the 6970m they are good cards, and as always there is some that come bad

One card failing does not mean that there is any kind of GPU problem. The 6970m is a great card and as MM said the fact that other companies are still using it explains that whatever reason it is that Clevo is not offering these any longer, it has nothing to do with AMD or some non existant defect with the 6970m, it is likely that any defect is limited to Clevo based machines or that AMD has just run into a shortage of 6970m

I have to agree with hawk on this one, based on what we saw and recommended on the what notebook should I buy section the 6970m was selling like hot cakes.

The only info we have regarding failure is from Kobalt and some owners that complained in the sager lounge (3 owners), but that is within the acceptable range, even low powered cards fails

The 6950M was just a paper launch, like so many other of AMD's mobile GPUs, which never saw the light of day.

Idk that wouldn't make too much sense as amd has had a XX50 for the last couple of generations. Clearly doesn't make sense from a business prospective too, i doubt they are just going to have one high end card.

They also brought out the desktop 6950 which is identical to the 6970 besides some minor ram tweak, so im sure some variant of a mobile card will come out based on the 6950.

So whether it be the 6950m or whatever other numbers im sure they will bring out something comparable.

Well Sager is now offering the GTX485m at 6970m prices, that could be the reason they discontinued the 6970m or they could simply be trying to clear the stocks of the 485m as the 580m just launched(they are offering that at the same price they used to offer the 485m at). Is there a chance that the 485m and the 580m will co exist??

Funny the GTX 580M is the same card as the 485M nice nvidia rebranding again, hopefully we can get a gtx485 laptop for alot cheaper.

i also found retailers selling the clevo with the 6970 having a huge price difference, nvidia is about twice as much, so maybe just sager did that.

GTX580M uses a the latest core revision and is clocked a bit higher at the same power consumption.

Have there been power consumption tests shown for the GTX 580M yet?

The official line from Nvidia is GTX 580M is 20% better perf per watt and, since nothing I've seen so far indicates GTX 580M has a 20% gain in FPS over GTX 485M, I'm assuming power consumption came down a bit.

yeah the 580 is just revised a bit whatever that means lol probably doesn't mean much, and it runs a bit faster, but both cards have the same SP's so you can just overclock the 485 and get the same results, and yes the 580 has a bit lower power consumption.

Ok guys I emailed AMD a few days ago and I got a response. They told me they have released the 6950M to various oem providers pretty much every laptop manufacterer. So it is not a paper launch like some stated. Second they said they dont have any reports of manufacterers removing the 6970m from their configurations due to defects. So the whole sager thing is probably just sager related.

So we should expect some notebooks shortly with the 6950m this is great!
