I totally tried it. The new catalyst only gives marginal performance improvements (20 more points in 3dmark05) and for some reason more stable overclocks when I really push my card.

I am having one problem with it though: if not plugged in, my laptop keeps restarting just before getting to the welcome screen in Windows. I'm not OCing and have not installed anything but the new catalyst drivers. Is anyone else having this problem?

    downloading here...
not sure about the increased performance, looks that it's all about this CrossFire thingy:

    New Features

This release of Catalyst® introduces CrossFire™ support for the Intel 965 Chipset. This feature is available for D3D applications, and is supported on ATI Radeon® X1900 CrossFire™ edition products. This feature is supported under the Windows XP operating system.

    Performance Improvement

As with most Catalyst® releases, performance has increased in various situations.

    * 3DMark2006 overall performance improves 6.7-23.7% with anti-aliasing enabled due to improvements in HyperZ efficiency on the Radeon® X1300, X1600 and X1800 series of products. The largest gains can be seen on Crossfire™ configurations and/or 256MB card configurations at resolutions of 1280x1024 or greater
    * Doom3 performances improves up to 9.3% due to further OpenGL shader complier and transform engine optimizations on the entire Radeon® X1000 Series of products. The largest gains can be seen on Radeon® X1900 configurations at resolutions of 1600x1200 or higher

While the increase isn't great, I can see a difference in Oblivion.

I can push the game to "very high" settings W/ HDR and still run smooth,
With 6.8 I ran about 20 FPS in very open areas, now I run over 30 FPS everywhere.

Catalyst 6.9 fixed my crashing issues in Oblivion! Finally! :) I could play Oblivion with Catalyst 6.7 or 6.8 only for few minutes before it crashed to desktop.

Not sure about the desktop one, but the mobile version's control center lets you manage PowerPlay, which lowers performance while running on battery power.
