Like any other new game, this needs a little getting used to. Remember guys, it's a new game all together. Some of the keys are different too (space bar is for the parachute, not the number 9). One of the vehicles maneuvers through the mouse, not the keyboard. You can customize a soldier's gear.
It's an awesome game, but I still love BF2.

One thing I loved about the game, is that you can find where your buddies are playing and join them like SOF2. Unlike BF2, where you have to go to BF2S.com too find your friends.

When I'm not playing, I'll try posting some news and update this mini review. So keep checking out this thread and any questions are most welcome.

On what computer are these screens taken? A laptop, and/or have you tried it on a laptop?

    Thanks, looks awesome!

The screen shots were taken from my beloved Toshiba P100-222 (specs and review on sig). Graphics are nice and any machine that handled BF2 can handle this.

They really need to figure out how to do a fast paging of large areas. That fog is retarded. If that's how foggy it has to be to perform on a 7900GS...

This is just a demo, I'm sure when the real game is out this won't be an issue, after you customize video settings.

I'm guessing anything with at least go 7400 or x1400 and 1 gig of ram can handle this.

P.S.Thanks for the rep power ;)

Your mini monster can easily handle this, I would however recommend an external LCD. I personally can manage gaming on a 12"er, but an external 17"lcd would blow!

For anyone who's played both this and BF2, are your machines performance the same for both titles?

I can run BF2 fairly satisfactorily on my 7400 and 1gig of ram, but wondering how well BF2142 would hold up, and if there is a large difference and what I should be hoping to acheive.

Same thing happened to me at first. Download and intall the latest version of directX (9) from here. If it still doesn't work, re-install BF2142 but I'm pretty sure it'll work.

I just read on the EA site that you need Direct X 9, and that, that error is caused by not having it.

For the direct x issue, see the forums at bf2142.com

Both battlefield 2 and 2142 perform the same on my laptop.

BF2142 needs direct X 9. Download it from here, install it and presto.

The error is not caused by not having direct x 9, it's caused by having a later-than-April-2006 copy of direct x 9. Again, see the forums at bf2142.com for detailed instructions on how to solve the problem, it's a very easy fix that does not require reinstalling the game.

Anyway, does anyone experience random crashes to the desktop during the game and the debriefing screen? Seems to have something to do with the video drivers, because the terrain textures dissappear before the crash. I'm using Catalyst 6.9.

Hey yan, how is these games performing on your laptop? Is the gameplay absolutely "fluid" and smooth, or are you sitting there wishing you hade a 7900GS under the hood?

I know that these are questions of personal taste, but as I will buy my first notebook in a couple of days and are an avid gamer, it would be nice to know other peoples feelings for the gameplay quality, rather than benches and FPS number crunching.

    Thanks in advance //Patrik

If you are into games I would recomend that you get a laptop with minimum 7900 or x1800, and throw in 2 gb of ram as well.
I play bf2 and have tried the bf2142 demo and they perform about the same. Actually, bf2142 loads faster than bf2. With my laptop (see below) I get a framerate of about 25-45 depending on what/and how much is happening on the screen. That is with every setting on max and res 1440x900.

Actually, now it definetly seems like I'm getting a A8Js. That should be plenty I guess.

Especially since I've seen very nicely rendered Oblivion screenshots on a A8Js @ 30 fps. :D

Here is how I run BF2142, runs great!

I run Terrain and Texture on medium because there is very little difference between medium and high and it saves some FPS.

Geometry high so i can see vehicles from afar.

Lighting medium so the black titan inside bug doesnt happen.

    Dynamic everything low works fine.

AA at 2x which really helps in the BF engine.

Texture Filtering (AF) is set to medium which I imagine is 4x.

View Distance maxed for strategic purposes.

Enhanced Lighting (Bloom) Off, no need.

Lovely looking game... I have a new V1JP and was thinking about a multiplayer tactical shooter to play on it. Do I need a headset and working microphone to play this game? Is it better than BF or BFII? I am used to Enemy Territory so was looking for something a bit more advanced than that given I now have a better graphics card...

havent played bf or bf2 but i can tell you that headset and microphone arent really essential for this one...only used if you wanna communicate within squads properly...i play the game without it....i like it a lot... and also nice laptop :)

I remember playing the demo and experiencing how badly the game ran graphically (it has the same requirements as BF2 which runs alot better!), and don't get me started on the crashing issues apparent in both games since either one uses the BF2 engine.

i think that bf 2142 is based on the bf2 engine with improvements and i havent had any crahses so far...(also added the patch 1.20 aswell) graphics are ok...all depends on your gpu and how much detail your setting it too..one thing that is a must is setting the viewing distance to around 85% minimum...sometimes you get random people (bloody snipers) jus popping you off from long distance and you cant tell cos unless your distance is set high enough...Started popping them off myself from a long distance now hehe..

I had my laptop for about almost 2 months, I think I'm going to attempt a reformat and see if it helps with performance and BF2142 (it runs pretty smooth but stutters quite a bit once in a while).
