Warning: The link above makes extensive use of the 'censored' smiley due to the emotion surrounding this topic, if true :p

Thoughts, comments or dismissals welcome. Another case of big, bad EA or mere internet slander which I am helping to spread?

Haven't read too much about this, but as I understand it, this is supposed to collect information that will then be used to target in game advertising? How is that even going to work in a game like Battlefield 2142? I can see how it could kind of work in a game that isn't set in another time, but it seems like it would be really bizarre to be playing BF2142 and see some posters around advertising BK Stackers or something.

Well, you have to open the case to get the warning (assuming someone doesn't already know that is)...but if you try to take it back, the stores will refuse since the package has been opened.

    Nice...

Yeah, that is pretty low of EA. I can only assume the adverts would appear much in the same way adverts appear in BF2142 demo - but a bit more subtle, maybe in a corner of the loading screen or something similar. I certainly don't think they will actually be in-game, "in-game" adverts, at least, I certainly hope not! That would be awful...

I seem to recall that EA was one of the companies working with Massive, who is specializing in in-game advertising. In that case at least you actually do see advertising in the game, although some of it is vaguely subtle (i.e. a Sprite vending machine, as in the example photo on their homepage).

    http://www.massiveincorporated.com/

But yeah, I still can't quite see how this would work for BF2142, unless maybe they do something cool and make it futuristic advertising (a la Minority Report or something).

Welp, I guess my transactions with DICE and EA end with BF2.

They (EA) just don't know when to stop do they!

To be honest BF was developed into crap when BF Vietnam came out. BF1942 was the best game and set standards for multiplayer games for years. The graphics at the time was overwelming and stunning. With the mod Desert Combat a new angel was added to an already perfect game. BF2 is nothing but moneyhungry people with no visions trying to suck out more cash from us

I accept that people wants to earn money and even that they wanna get rich for a huge amunt of work as wth BF1942 but when it turns into a circus were development and coding is flushed out in the toilet I just don't like them anymore...

BF2 was in my opinion the last decent BF game.

that's because EA bought the rights after BF1942 went big. They have a way of buying great/popular properties, turning them into crappy, over-hyped graphics masturbation sessions that end up being empty and horrible.

In fairness BF2 was a great game. Amazing engine, lovely visuals, and a real sense of modern weaponry.

BF2142 on the other hand is just, at a basic level, a mere re-skin that is pretty much a mod and all the weapons are cliched sci-fi rubbish and have no genuine or meaty feel to them. Point of Existance for BF2 is a much better game for example and its free, why do EA think they can rush out this game and rake in the big cash with minimum effort?

Sadly they are probably right. But I will not buy BF2142, and will instead continue playing BF2. Hopefully Quake Wars will fill the gap now created by those money grabbing scumbags at EA, but if not, I guess I'll have to stick with BF2.

I would love to see a BF3 return to the WWII era, or perhaps something a bit different like the Korean War, or even WWI.

Yes! I would say that Battlefield Vietnam was actually pretty good apart from the horrific exploits you could do with helicopters, but otherwise it was great, mainly due to the fact it was based on 1942, which is my favourite fps ever.

I went off BF2 very quickly, too much candy and not enough gameplay. As for this bf2142, i think they're taking the rep of a great game and peeing all over it. In game adverts are ignorable but monitoring me? Don't flatter yourself, EA.

    Straight from DICE:

    Here it is
    "Quote:
    Greetings,
We would like to provide more information on in-game advertising in Battlefield 2142. To try and help everyone better understand it, here is how it works.

The in-game advertisement is respectful of players' privacy: it never accesses files not directly related to the game, and it does not capture personal data such as cookies, account login detail, gameplay behaviour or surfing history. As it is an integrated part of Battlefield 2142 and not a separate program, it only runs when the game is running.

Because BF2142 delivers ads by region, the IP address of the player is used to determine the region of the player and helps serve ads by region and language; for instance, a player in Paris will be presented with ads in French. Note that this IP address is not stored on the advertisement server and is not repurposed for other uses.

A unique ID number is anonymously assigned the first time the player joins a Battlefield 2142 online game. It is stored locally on the PC but is not linked to any personal details.

The in-game advertisement gathers what we call “impression data”, such as location of the billboard in the game or duration of advertisement impression. It helps see how many people have seen an ad – but not who has seen it.

We are also conscious that the advertisement shouldn’t distract the player from the overall gaming experience, so all ads fit in the unique environment of each level in the game. The content of the ads is also controlled to ensure that no offensive content is displayed in Battlefield 2142.

We all hope that this explanation will address recent concerns on the advertisement in Battlefield 2142.

    See you on the Battlefield.

    -Your Dice Live Team"
