Ok I found out what was causing my horrible hit detection in Battlefield Bad Company 2. So those of you who play the multiplayer and can't seem to kill anyone even though you unload a whole clip into the person, try going into control panel>Network & sharing center> on the left panel click change adapter settings (win 7) or manage network settings (vista), then right click your connection and/or click properties/adapter properties, then under networking tab both "internet protocol version 6 & 4 (TCP/Ipv6 & 4) should both have check marks. Uncheck version 6. Apply by clicking ok, and now try running Pingtest.net and in Battlefield Bad Company 2 you should have a better & more effective hit detection. Let me know how it's worked for you.

Any there any negative consequences due to disabling Ipv6?

no problem, it's conflicting with Ipv4. I believe it's just something new from microsoft that is on by default, but is not really utilized. This is according to my ISP.

EDIT: I am so enjoying the game now, since before this I could never make much kills because of the awful hit detection.

IPV6 is the replacement for IPV4 that everyone's been clamoring about for the past few years. Basically the world is going to run out of IP addresses (IPv4 is 32-bit, and therefore supports 4 billion devices), so everyone needs to move to IPv6 (128-bit, supports such a large number of devices that I don't know how to express the value). A year ago, they said we would run out in 6 months. Two months ago, they said we would run out in a month (this has been going on for years). Someday we'll actually run out and then everyone will get into Y2K syndrome and actually change over. Until then, everyone's going to continue to pretend nothing's amiss.

Jacob, I also suffer from the "hit detection" problem. I blame it on lag, even though I know it's because of my utter lack of skill.

Good to know, I'll try it out.

IPv6 will sneak up on us sooner than we expect though. It's needed due to the vastly quick expansion of the web, but major changes will need to happen across the board before it's commonplace.

well for now, I'm not having any problems leaving IVP6 unchecked. Infact, I was supposed to go out on a date with my girlfriend, but I cancelled because my hit detection is actually working and give me head shots and kills like never before in Battlefield Bad Company 2, the date can wait for another day. LOL...

You know I thought the same thing, since I live in Hawaii and I can't get any ping below 250, but I can testify to the fact that with this fix, I am now having effective and precise hit detection. It was not a bug on DICE's part or Battlefield Programming. It has to do with the network connection and I posted the fix. I want to post the fix all over the web, in all the forums I've been too that tried to find a solution to this problem and heck, it actually came from my ISP from trying to resolve the lost packets I was having on Pingtest.net. :)

LOOOL. I wonder what excuse you gave her, because you couldn't have possibly said: "BFBC2's hit detection is working for me now, so I can't make our date today." :D . Glad you could fix the game for yourself though.

IPv6 and IPv4 are two different protocols ... they don't conflict with each other ...

IPv6 will exist for at least until the next decades if the growth of devices connected to internet remains stable .
    it supports
    zomgftrigazibillion number of devices

let's not get off topic. I found the solution to the miserable hit detection in BFBC2. This thread is not a description about what IPV6 is, we already know from previous comments. I believe my Internet service provider is well versed in what IPv6 does and how important it is to my computer's health and system performance. If they advised me to turn it off, then I don't see any problem in doing so, besides it's as simple as "check marking" the box to enable it if it does pose a problem in the future. So give the fix a try and be happy the BFBC2 horrible hit detection mystery is solve.

Some routers have issues with ipv6 and other things. could be a router issue but by disabling ipv6 it fixed it.

I do know that the MCCS wifi in the barracks has issues with ipv6 and i assume they have issues with it since their router blows.

Routers are by far the most crap shoot in buying ever. Which is why i am glad that www.smallnetbuilder.com exists! Gone through 3 routers all have sucked but i was recommended to that site and got the netgear 3700 and its awesome. My best bet is this ipv6 fix is because your router sucks

I agree that this should not fix the issue.. There shouldn't be a confliction between IPv6 and v4..

However, I disabled IPv6 just to give it a try and it seems to have dramatically improved hit detection.. I can actually snipe now without having to take 10 shots to hit something...

I am 100% sure its a problem with BC2 and not a problem between the two protocols conflicting with each other.

no placebo effect going on here. I'm actually getting lots of kills now, before I did this, I would spot enemies close up without them noticing me and would unload a hundred rounds with the medic LMG and nothing, they would turn around and shoot me with one shot. Not anymore, when I shoot first I kill first. Again I was trouble shooting with my ISP because of loss packets according to pingtest.net and they offered me this solution, my grade went up from a C to a B on the ping test and then I tried it playing BFBC2, and surprise, surprise! I was now playing like a pro. :D

it still fluctuates up and down. I never had good download speeds with Clearwire. Most of the time I get 1-2 mbps, sometimes I get 4-6 mbps on speedtest.net. Also I always fail the packet loss test on pingtest.net, but using the command promt and testing ping there I don't get any loss packets. So it's pretty unreliable and when I do get real low download speeds it does also effect the hit detection in BFBC2, but overall though, the fix has worked wonders in BFBC2.

I'm happy this has worked for some of you, but I have IP6 enabled and have for the duration of owning this game, and never had a problem. I noticed that after about 5000 kills, I just began getting better. K/D ratio improved with every game. What poor performance I blamed on hit detection, went away and I was a professional killer. I think the problem is more accurately attributed to learning how the game works after a lot of experience and knowing which weapons do what kind of damage. It still takes me 1/3 to a 1/2 a clip to kill people sometimes, but this depends more on the type of weapon I am using and the rate of fire it has. Not on what protocols I have enabled. Burst firing with most weapons will dramatically improve your accuracy.

I will say that hardware definitley plays a part in how good you are. And possibly those who this fix has worked for, may be in fact suffering from poor network adaptors or badly written drivers. But I can't see how disabling the IP6 protocol on your adaptor will automatically improve BFBC2 play. Especially when there are tons of people who haven't disabled IP6 and are running fine.

jacob808, you definitely had a problem with the multiplayer and found a solution (disabling Ipv6). There's no question about that, it is just that many other guys who know a little more find the explanation a bit weird since these protocols are still not enabled. Thus leading to suspect the culprit (if ping is fine) is an issue with the data transmission (like the router or as above proposed some bad drivers for the communication device).

In any case, its good that you found a solution to your problem. :D

BFBC2 does have horrible hit detection problems, and I don't care how much I'd play, there were times when I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with shotgun standing two feet away. Other times it's pretty decent, seems to have improved recently, don't know if there was a patch or anything. I haven't played for months, but got back on since I got the vietnam expansion, although found myself playing regular BFBC2. K/D isn't everything, mine is 0.74, but since I got back on in the last few days I've been at much better than 1.0, probably average 1.2.

I checked to turn off my IPv6, but it was already disabled, so no way to tell if it would help or not, and not about to reactivate.

That being said, it really ticked/ticks me off when people say "I don't have a problem with it I don't know what you're talking about", because the issue exists for lots of people, nobody has been able to determine what it is.

I fired up BF2 yesterday to see how things were going and man they were bad. Hit detection was terrible, even when iron sighting from the crouching position a target less than 50 meters away, out of 30 rounds only like 2 hit!

And then of course was the continuous air pwnage by BF2 veterans with K/D's of 50-2. You know, because DICE couldn't have made it any easier for the planes to dominate with automatic squares around ground targets and stationary, ineffective AA.

Getting in a vehicle on any BF2 map with planes is a death sentence.

Yeah BF2 can be pretty bad. Although I ended up being decent as sniper, otherwise I'll go with splash damage weapons. I always wanted BF2 to have a kit for the AT class to carry an AA (Stinger) shoulder mounted weapon. It would help level the playing field against aircraft.

I hope for BF3 they hire a good team for netcode. I mean this franchise is worth probably hundreds of millions of dollars. Spend a few bucks and get it right.

I'm not blind to the hit detection problem. I too experienced poor hit detection. It was as a child when my friends and I played Army or cops and robbers. Those kids never got hit! :D

I think all games have bad hit detection to an extent. I'm sure it's caused by a myriad of reasons that I cannot intelligently explain. It would be great if a game developer could chime in with how hit detection is affected by environmental variables.

I've played FPS's nearly all my life. Literally thousands of hours in FPS's and I can tell hit detection problems. In addition I've played BC2 since the first day the beta came out so its not that I'm "new to the game" or "haven't learned the weapons" as mentioned above.

6-10 shots at a target with a one shot kill sniper rifle and they don't go down? I'm standing still, they are standing still, I'm aiming appropriately, plain sight with no potential objects to block the bullet... and I never hit them.

This is not an issue with my abilities to snipe, this is an issue with hit detection. I noticed hit detection was significantly improved when I disabled IPv6 last night. I sniped for a few hours and was consistently getting 1 shot kills and never once had to take more than 2 or 3 shots to kill a target.

Now, it could be placebo effect.. Unfortunately theres no way to prove it one way or another..

From a technical standpoint, IPv6 shouldn't interfere at all with IPv4. However, my idea is that BC2, the game itself, has some sort of programming issue. Maybe they have tried to make their game future proof by implementing a feature that checks to see if IPv6 is available and this causes in game lag and bad hit detection. Maybe they don't handle protocols properly and having two enabled trips the game up and causes lag. There could be a dozen different things they are doing with their game that could be affected by having two IP protocols enabled and the games software not handling it properly.

I'm not happy about having to disable IPv6 as very soon we will get to a point where it MUST be enabled to go to certain websites.. however, for now this seems to be a great fix (placebo or not) for the hit detection problems.

Funny, I've never experienced hit detection problems in BC2 or BF2. BF 1942 was a lil' wonky for me but that was usually because of a poor internet connection and my sole tactic of running and jumping around while never letting go of the left mouse button.

If you take your time, lead your targets, aim a tiny bit above their head to let the bullet drop, fire in bursts, you'll end up with kills.

Edit: Heck, I remember counter-sniping from long ways away with a pistol! Just gotta be a little patient.

Here's another fix you can try. This is the "go-to" fix for the WoW community, and It seems to have the same perceived effect on other online games as well:

    Leatrix Latency Fix

If you wanna know the details about this, just read the page. There is a good explanation there.

Need to know a few things, your ping. Do the speed test and report your ping, it will be pretty accurate for what you are, ping may be and indicator. I have a feeling because your on an island your subjected to a bit of ping. Im glad that this fix worked for you but a few things people should know about fps games.

There is a fine balance between too real and fun, and by that is in real life, there would be no way you'd aim down your gun and the first shot to come out is perfect on target, so developers program a bit of a pattern into the shot. Like another poster said if you tap the button your gun is more accurate because your not spraying your bullets in a pattern that may be undesirable, like in real life! I shoot rifles and I know others here do too so they'd back me up by saying that. So just a helpfull hint the next time you get into a gun fight in your game, don't hold the trigger, this will spray the bullets forcing the game to jump your gun around, even if your still aiming straight your bullets will fly around in a random pattern. That is designed.

Yadda yadda yadda, been down this street before. People know not to spray bullets, etc. On the other hand I see level 40+ to 50 spraying all day long and getting kills left and right. There are hit detection problems period. My ping is usually one of the better ones too, but it still is a significant issue. I don't know what it is, I don't know that anyone does to be honest. Some people claim all day long that I suck, blah blah blah when on my screen I blow their face away with an RPG but they don't die, and they turn around and shoot me from 1000 yards away with a one shot headshot from an uzi.

I get good games and bad games, and try to stick with servers that I usually have better games than others.

Of course this is all opinion based, who knows whats really wrong. Just like BLOPS it has horrible hit detection, no doubt about that, another problem could be the game was designed first for consoles so maybe the conversion process hasn't made it pc friendly.

Although I do pity the net coders because that has to be difficult to manage any amount of varying pings and ensure what one person sees is what the other person sees as well and the appropriate reaction is shown on both screens.

I live in chicago and play mostly chicago servers. I join with servers with a ping ~30. Maybe servers closer than an ocean away would help.

    obvious exaggeration is obvious.

Not far from truth... I hear lots of people from Chicago or New York who play servers in their city get great pings and have little issue with hit detection. Good for you. For the rest of us, it matters. There's few if any servers near me.
