2 weeks ago I've bought BC2, was playing fluid without any problems at single player but when I try to play multi sometimes my desktop freezes. Sometimes after an hour sometimes after a minute and sometimes it freezes absolutely not. I've done every possible stress tests and didn't get any overheat problems my temps were all fine
My specs are:
Zotac geforce 9600gt
Core2du e8400 3mhz
4gb 1066mhz ram
Windows 7 ultimate 64bit

Would it possible be the sound loop freeze that people are experiencing? (check it out on youtube)
If so, it's related to Punkbuster and possibly onboard realtek sound (driver specifically). It's been stated by other forum users at the official forums and that this issue was common even in BF2.
My 'fix' was that i uninstalled the realtek drivers and let windows 7 use it's standard drivers. This has been noted that it doesn't fixed it for everyone but it did for me.
I can't find the original thread on the EA forums where i posted my fixes though but you could try this;
1. uninstall realtek drivers through add/remove programs.
2. reboot to safe mode.
3. run driver sweeper, Guru3D - Driver Sweeper
4. remember to only tick Realtek, clean it out.
5. reboot to normal mode and try playing the game.
In the original thread it was also stated by someone that it could be caused by IRQ issues. This was on my desktop so i decided to disable some ports in the bios (like printer ports and stuff).
Another thing you could try, if you indeed have onboard sound, is before uninstalling drivers, disable the onboard sound in bios (if possible).
If you do not notice crashes then it can be traced back to this.
The easiest solution for laptop users, i believe, is to buy a headset with built-in usb soundcard or just a usb soundcard. You may also be able to use an express card if your laptop supports it. -
Yeah that's what I'm talking about. I'm gonna try it and report here.
Edit: Hmm now I don't have any sound... -
Your sound will be disabled if you disabled it in bios.
If removing the driver windows should make a popup appear where it installs it's own driver.
If it doesn't, make sure to check windows update because there might be a new update regarding a onboard sound driver but IIRC this driver should've been coming with win 7 x64 in the first place.
If, for some reason, windows doesn't try to add their standard driver for you and you need the realtek driver i'd be happy to give you a link for this.
I will assume you're on a desktop, yes? Well, if you know what kind of motherboard you have i can provide you with a link directly to that site.
You can also go directly to realteks site in order to find it. -
I've done everything you said step by step didn't go to BIOS and disable it there if that'S what you mean
GA-EP45-DS3R (rev. 1.0) - GIGABYTE
Now i'm downloading the latest driver from there but i didn't get this. When i download it won't i have the same problem? -
Yes you probably will.
My 'fix' (as in, it fixed it for me), was that i cleared out the current realtek driver i had installed.
After the reboot from safe mode windows automatically installed a standard onboard driver that i assume is a standard driver used for common onboard sound cards.
This allowed me to have sound and the sound loop crash in BC2 was fixed (i played for 5+ hours every single day for about a week).
As it seems now your standard windows driver did not install, thus that would explain your lack of sound. Your problem will however probably persist once you install the realtek driver provided by your motherboard manufacturer/realtek's own driver, as it's this coupled with PB-enabled servers that's likely the cause.
I have not followed the issue lately since it was fixed for me, and there might be new updates regarding this (maybe something else is interfering).
I would advice you to check out the official BC2 forums regarding this, but i can almost guarantee this issue is caused by a combination of realtek drivers and punkbuster.
I remember users reported they had fixed their problem by buying an pci/pci-e/usb soundcard.
I refused however to buy a standalone soundcard for just one game and did what i did as per above and it fixed it, however as stated in my OP, your mileage may vary. -
My headset used to plug in i took it and played like one and half hour without any freeze
Funny solution i guess -
My computer freezed again so I've decided to try your fix again. I've done all the steps again and now i can get a sound. It says:
Digital Sound (S/PDIF)
High Definiton Audio Device
Is that the true one? I haven't tried it yet -
I'm not at my desktop atm but IIRC i never installed the realtek driver on my laptop as well so in the device manager look for "sound, video and game controllers". there should be "high definition audio device".
Double click and check if the driver is made by Microsoft.
This should be the one (assuming you haven't installed a driver from realtek/your mobo manufacturer's site).
It worked for me as i said, but not for everyone. The other 'fixes' was at the time;
1. buy a new soundcard, one without a realtek chip.
2. disable sound in bios, play without sound.
3. play on punkbuster disabled servers, exposing you to cheaters.
IIRC, one member on the official forums contacted Punkbuster and said they were aware of the issue and it was going to get fixed. This was months ago. -
Guys thanks for the solution .Here i got my answer. The solution is really tricky & logical.Keep posting more.

I've played like 3 hours without any freeze, guess that worked for me also, thanks for the solution

Feel free to update drama89 if you're still not experiencing any crashes.
Also note that when playing that you're infact playing on PB-enabled servers and that it's working properly now.
Feel free to rep -
I forget to update sorry yesterday evening I had another freeze
I've changed my setting to 24 bit 48000 Hz (I read it from EA forum) hope this will help. If I get a headset with its own sound card will I be still using Realtek's driver? I was thniking to buy this one:
Plantronics Gamecom 777 Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound Gaming Headset -
I managed to find the original post where i explained my fix;
Display freez with Soundloop "Brrrr..." on Battlefield Bad Company 2 Punkbuster server - Electronic Arts UK Community
You can have a read there and decide what you want to do.
I can not vouch for any hardware you buy if it will fix your problem.
