Eidos Interactive, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, and NVIDIA Corporation today announced that the Games for Windows® LIVE release of forthcoming DC Comics-licensed videogame, Batman: Arkham Asylum, will feature NVIDIA® PhysX® technology, which allows for the creation of incredibly realistic worlds full of interactive materials and objects. As a result, PC gamers will get to experience intense realism and fully immerse themselves in Batmans journey into Gotham Citys asylum for the criminally insane.
Hardware accelerated by supported NVIDIA GeForce GPUs, PhysX technology provides an even deeper level of engagement for players of Batman: Arkham Asylum by utilizing the processing power of the NVIDIA GPU to render stunning in-game physics objects in the environment that not only add to the overall look of the game but create an immersive and believable world.
With PhysX technology enabled, players can explore darkened corridors packed with volumetric fog which reacts to Batmans movement and cobwebs which tear with his passing. Combat becomes a maelstrom of motion as office papers are thrown into the air alongside soda cans and litter as Batman lands each punch upon The Jokers henchmen. Throughout the game, the decaying gothic architecture is realized to an incredible detail with wall tiles chipping and breaking, stone pillars crumbling upon impact, and particles from breaking glass and debris shattering and falling down around Batmans feet.
Supporting NVIDIA PhysX technology has allowed us to add that little bit extra to the PC version of the game, said Sefton Hill, Game Director at Rocksteady Studios. As Batman interacts with the world, the aging asylum creates a more immersive, believable world which really draws the player in.
Batman: Arkham Asylum exposes players to a unique, dark and atmospheric adventure that takes them to the depths of Arkham Asylum Gotham Citys psychiatric hospital for the criminally insane. Gamers will move in the shadows, instigate fear amongst their enemies and confront The Joker and Gotham Citys most notorious villains who have taken over the asylum. Using a wide range of Batmans gadgets and abilities, players will become the Invisible Predator and attempt to foil The Jokers demented scheme.
The NVIDIA PhysX development platform consists of a robust physics engine, API, and middleware designed to give developers and animators unprecedented creative control over the look of their final in-game interactivity by allowing them to author and preview physics in real time. To take advantage of PhysX technology in Batman: Arkham Asylum, players must have a compatible NVIDIA GPU and a copy of the Games for Windows® LIVE version of the game, which ships from September 15th, 2009, in North America, and from September 18th, 2009, in Europe and Australia.
Batman: Arkham Asylum will also be available for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft® and PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system from August 25, 2009, in North America and August 28th, 2009, in Europe and Australia.

this is true about the Physx as i had mentioned earlier in the batman Demo post.
I coudlnt play the game at the beginning i kept getting an error that would say that i needed to upgrade to the Physx driver update. So i did, and it was worth it. You can definitely see where PhysX is used in this game when Batman is running its crazy the way his cape moves. -
i didnt get the physx error but i did get the update to newest drivers error but im already on 186.03 so just click ok and it loads fine.
^^totally agree with you Red about the cape movement.very good effects. -

But on ATI they did not even get AA working.
-
This game plays great! Using a 8800GTXm and I play at 1680x1050, with everything at high, and it runs very smooth. I'm very impressed with the fighting, flows so well between each move and the finishers are lots of fun. Definitely picking this game up when it comes out.

I also noticed there is some PhysX when he is flying down and you are controlling him with his cape. -

I really love the physx. I just wish that there Nvidia 3d vision for notebooks.
-
nice i downloaded the game and its awesome Thanks MrDj for the link
, althou it asked me to update
my driver to the leatest -__- , i do have the last one .. anyhow how can i
notice physx ? as far as i know physx make the game more realistic.
btw it asked me if i want physx on mediam or high .. it says u need geforce 240gx (i think ) for mediam OR geforece 9800 ( if i want it on high ) ...
i have 9700m gts (notebook gpu) which one is closer to me ?
and also how can i notice physx in this game ? ...
UPDATE:- i found out !, i could break the wall partially when i enable physx on high but it affects the performance a lil bit -
spradhan01 Notebook Virtuoso
I maxed out each and every component in my gpu.
-
So is the difference with and without PhysX a big hit on performance? I mean, how does the game run on ATI vs Nvidia without PhysX?
-
spradhan01 Notebook Virtuoso
Nvidia graphics will be better with more effects, details and realism.
-
Well that's kind of obvious if the game is designed & coded with the Nvidia architecture in mind(it'll probably have the Nvidia logo on the box too). My questions regarded the impact of performance with PhysX(as in the past it hit really big) as well as the playability in terms of ATI; some games made for Nvidia simply perform better on Nvidia(but still perform well on ATI) while others just perform horribly on ATI architecture.
-
Physx enabled can reduce performance in this game at over 10 fps. -
I can play with Physx on normal using only my CPU (since I have an ATI GPU) and get 15-18 fps with everything else maxed... except for AA which is also not supported for ATI... looks like Nvidia's marketing strategy of paying game developers instead of developing new technology is paying off... I know, I know, it's mostly on the laptop end that they incessantly rebrand and they were the first to get 40nm chips out, but hey, let me whine.
-
Well to be technical, Nvidia's architecture always did have more popularity amongst PC games than ATI's. It's a question of the engine used, not just "Nvidia paying game developers". For example, the Source engine featured in Valve games utilizes ATI architecture better whilst the Crytek and Unreal engines favor Nvidia architecture in the way they operate. Game developers only choose which engine to perform on and considering PhysX has been out longer than ATI's equivalent(whose name eludes me atm),. then perhaps they made a good move using an engine which supports Nvidia.
At the end of the day the game will run on both GPU sets anyways. -

Ran the game maxed out on my desktop minus AA, gee, thx Nvidia. -

To me though, Physx seems to take a hard hit on performance.....oh well Physx is the future. -

Lol, that is true. This is one of the reasons i cant wait for the 4860/90 to come out. That will be awesome.
Eventually ATI will come out with there own tech to compete. -
usapatriot Notebook Nobel Laureate
Besides, PhysX isn't tech! It's just BS proprietary software. -
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
They are actually doing really good in the notebook segement as well. And now that the ATI 4200 Integrated will come out it shall be fun to see where it goes.

oh yeah i still really enjoy it, in fact i just overclocked and went back and ran with physx on high and all settings high and 1920x1200 on my 24" monitor and it was running at pretty nice mostly around 30 fps, dipping to 25 occasionally and getting up in the 40's occasionally.
-
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
Hm, i have to overclock my processor i just started resarching to do it today........im glad yopu can run it on full though
-
Even on darkest of days, physx high, i get the occasional dips below 20. I guess you really need SLI to get this working. -
motherpuncher22 Notebook Consultant
yeah Im sure it was on high, bc I set it thinking it would not run very well but I would try it anyway, I was kinda surprised. To be more specific...v sync and aa were turned off ( I dont think AA is necessary at 1920x1200) detail level high, and all effects turned on except ambient occlusion, that would cause a drop in fps also. Also, like I said, I had it overclocked as well.

Thund3rball I dont know, I'm guessing
And just how is ATI "raping" Nvidia? If you want a price/performance comparison than in some cases the ATI solution is the better choice however, Nvidia's pricing is really dropping these days and looking at the Steam Hardware Survey from July 2009, Nvidia is WAY ahead as far as implementation on desktop systems.

Firstly hi Iam a new poster. I have been running the demo on my xps m1730 @3.4ghz on 9800m gt sli and all settings on high with physx in 1920x1200. Getting 28-40 fps very playable, really nice looking game.
FYI physx is now open to all developers, altough nvidia purchased it they have opened it to developers and hardware manufacturers. So as far as Iam aware ATI could support physx if they so chose.
Ohh yeah if I take physx off I get 60fps solid.
Cheers,
Ben. -

Welcome tot he forums.......interesting i doubt ATI will want to fill Nvidia's Pockets though.

True mate!! How are other people finding running this demo on their laptops??
