Recently i purchased a dell vostro 1700 with an 8600m gt and 17" UXGA screen...

When trying to launch battlefield 2 it crashes before intro due to the refresh rate of my screen being 59hz while the game needs at least 60hz to start ( crappy programming) , no config file changes work, but using an external screen loads the game..

How can i change the refresh rate of the laptop lcd to 60hz in vista? All options seem greyed out and i've been doing intense searching around the net, is there a way to get it to 60hz manualy, anyone run into this?

Display settings > Advanced settings > Monitor > Monitor settings > Screen refresh rate

mxxl, he said the refresh rate is locked, meaning options to change it are not available.

bsang, I might have that problem too soon so I had a look around but no success. The closest I found was a suggestion to use an external monitor and then switching to the laptop's screen in game. Obviously, this is not an elegant solution and often not practical.

This might work (the solution is not confirmed though):

(It involves changing a config file for BF2)

Thanks for the quick reply, but no luck, already tried setting 2 config files for bf2, also tried a whole bunch of refresh rate force applications but no luck, the only solution would involve making windows or the lcd think its running at 60hz, anyone know if theres an lcd driver that can put different refresh rates?

Does Nvidia have a tool or something for it.. i know ATI's Catalyst Control center for desktops has a way or manually forcing your Monitor Refresh rate to different levels.

    Rivatuner can override refresh rate.

I don't think the refresh rate is your problem. I suspect the external monitor is running at a different resolution from your notebook screen. Try setting your notebook screen resolution to the same resolution as your external monitor is using before you enter the game. Many of EA's games experience this issue (not just Battlefield 2).

I've been working on this BF2/"59hz" issue for two months on my Toshiba X205. I see no way to report my refresh rate as 60hz (or higher) to BF2. I have tried a couple (including Rivatuner) of the display tweak tools to force the refresh rate with no luck. I too use the work-around of connecting an external monitor 1st then switch to the lappy display after the game starts. BF2 works great then.
