A good friend of mine has to go out of town for a good 3-4 months for work. He mainly plays multiplayer Battlefield 2, C&C Generals (Zero Hour), and some SWAT 4. Of course he also wants web and email access too. He doesn't have much money, but he'll be hard pressed to go for 4 months without a PC.

Micro Center has this laptop for $299 on Dec. 26 (one day only):

    Acer Aspire 4315-2004
    Celeron M 530 CPU 1.73GHz
    512MB DDR2-667 (will upgrade to 2GB for $35)
    80GB HDD
    Combo DVD-Rom/CDRW
    Intel GMA X3100
    10/100 Ethernet
    802.11b/g Wireless
    14.1" WXGA CrystalBrite 1280x800 display
    Windows Vista Home Basic

I know the GMA x3100 is "significantly" better than its previous 900 series of integrated graphics. I surprisingly played Battlefield 2 somewhat successfully with a Radeon Xpress 1100 @ 800x600 so I would think this might allow for some medium level details to be enabled? I am also assuming Generals should run fine with it as well?

Anyone had success with a similar laptop? Thanks!

Hardwarewise it is significantly better, but with poor driver support it is still up in the air *sigh

It will perform better then 1100 though, which is a good new for him =D

That sucks. Too bad this is more often the case than not (good hardware, poor driver support). Maybe they'll have better drivers soon?

Anyone know of a third party site that offers better Intel driver support?
