I'm thinking of getting Battlefield 2. But I'm wondering if it is still popular and worth my $30?

Or should I just get 2142?

its not really going to an mmo. its just a shooter with customization. anyway BF2 is probally the best pc multiplayer shooter out thier. next to tf2. cod4, and CSS. 10 bucks. great graphics. huge depth. large community. what more can you ask for?

For fast pace MMO-FPS... I'm more of a UT guy. (I hate waiting to round to end... re-spawning and getting revenge is better)
UT2004 is still play a lot of... and playing UT3 a good amount as well.

    Massive Multiplayer Online....

I would say I play 25+ players on maps (with many servers) in UT all the time.

why not MMO? ... it could just be a MOFPS. :)

I'd say MMOs usually refer to RPGs.

    From wikipedia:

A massively multiplayer online game (also called MMOG or simply MMO) is a video game which is capable of supporting hundreds or thousands of players simultaneously.

I thought I would have to buy the ultimate edition or whatever it is. If I can get by with the $10 version, I'll get the instead.

    Does it support widesccreen?

Unreal is too fast for me

EA cut support for BF2142 before BF2 (for good reason). BF2 is still very popular, over 3000 servers listed. You can get it new for like $10, or the Battlefield 2 complete package with all the booster packs like Armored Fury and Euro Force for $30.

yes get bf2. that new "free" battlefield game coming out is in fact free, but if you want the good weapons and stuff u need REAL CASH to "buy" the weapons.etc. and use it in the game... shame ;\

No its not weapons. Its just customizations. Like clothing, there are a few powerups, but they like level you up faster. They were very clear that there weren't selling anything weapon related that would unbalance the game. They are even making future maps free so they won't divide the community.

Battlefield 2 is alive and well. Not as alive as it was one or two years ago, but still hundreds of populated servers are easy to find.

You can get the Battlefield 2 Complete Collection for $30. It's an awesome bang for the buck. I have over 350 hours so far in it and keep coming back for more. It takes a while to hone your skills for each class and to upgrade each class too. So once you get bored with one, you can move on to the next. I used to hate snipers, thought it was so hard. Now I typically get a 2 to 1 kill ratio.

It's a game that takes patience to get to know, and also to find good servers with people that play fairly.

Battlefield 2 is still one of the most popular multiplayer games out there. I suggest you purchase Battlefield 2 and try out Project Reality mod.
It's the most popular BF2 mod at the moment and has won numerous different awards. Project Reality is the most realistic combat mod you'll find, with new weapons, vehicles, destructibility, gameplay, maps (some 17km square maps), armies, etc along with a friendly community.

Hers a direct link to the site:
    http://www.realitymod.com/

Here are a few Project Reality videos:
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=1tioCxvbIyQ
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=Iv99q75O_f0&feature=related
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XW5U8QL_23k

The mod requires patch v1.41 for BF2 and the system requirements are a little higher than normal BF2, but nothing today’s computers can't handle.

PS. Read the PR guide before playing.

Be careful with Project Reality though, as it has huge maps, and the essentially one shot kill is pretty much applicable. I found it more annoying than fun, but to each their own. Maybe I've been spoiled too much by the action pace of BF2, but I like it.

Of course I loved Operation Flashpoint and have been trying to get into ArmA, but BF2 has the right combination of action, map sizes, balancing (ok, there are a few issues there), and fun so I keep coming back for more.

I just reinstalled and I love this game.

Project Reality is better IMO than the regular game. It's alot more realistic and team based. The fact that its more team based means alot to me personally. Not to say regular BF2 isn't team based. It is, but moreso Project Reality. I would give it a try.

I play the regular game just to do like a Halo type thing and kill whatever and rank up. But i'm mostly on PR

I'd say go ahead and spend the thirty dollars for the complete collection in relation to Battlefield 2. It's not as popular as it once was but the last time I checked it was still frequented by a nice horde of people.

And suddenly I think back to when I was ranked within the top 1200 out of 500,000+ for aircraft.

    Damned military.

BF2 was a great game but you've somewhat missed the boat if you're only contemplating buying it now. I used to be addicted, playing online nightly for about a year. Went back to it recently for nostalgia's sake and found it fairly ugly, clunky and boring compared to newer titles - still an OK game, but a shadow of what it was in its day - it just doesn't have the long term factor of SOF2, United Offensive, etc going for it.

I stopped playing BF2 in 2006 when EA's crappy servers would only let me download their updates at 20kbps or something MAX for an update well over 100mb. What the hell was that all about? I was stuck with a rubbish, outdated version so I just stopped playing altogether.

I remember back in the day ('05-'06), Joint Ops was the way to go :D Such brilliant fun. I owned the most hated clan in the community ^.^ (RAM - Randomly Attacking Morons... And our motto was "We píss people off for fun!") It only lasted a couple of months though.

Damn... I miss online FPS gaming :p Ah well... If you can get your hands on speedy updates, then I would recommend BF2 to anyone really. The physics for flying helicopters is great!

    ????

BF2 has a huge fan base still, tons of servers with thousands of players online at any given time. The graphics are from a game released three years ago, so take that for what its worth. If you find decent servers it is far from boring. Just look past its flaws and deal with it and it becomes a very fun game.

I still play Operation Flashpoint which has very dated graphics but the gameplay is spectacular.

A lot of the newer titles I think have all flash and no substance. Games like CoD4 multiplayer is nothing but Quake 3 but with modern military. It was fun for a few weeks, then it got boring.

    Woot for Necro posts.

Stryker, I would estimate that you'd want a dedicated GPU with atleast 128MB dedicated VRAM and maybe around an Nvidia 8400 to have med/high settings.

My only source of reference is my laptop (in the signature) which I can run it on low/med settings, and my friends XPS M1530 8600M GT which plows it at max settings.

And yes, to be on topic with this thread I still play this game regularly, partly because it's one of the few games I can run on my laptop, and because it's still an awesome game.

Yeah I know it's an old topic but why create another thread when this will cover it. Also, will the Radeon HD 3450 work well? I guess that's the only card you can get in a non-XPS laptop.

According to The Mobile Graphics Card Info Page By: Chaz the HD3450 is the strongest of the Mid-Range cards. I'd be comfortable in saying you should be able to run BF2 at max settings at a reasonable resolution. The game is several years old and the HD3450 can handle some newer games at medium settings so BF2 should be pretty easy.
