I just moved into college and since saturday i have only been able to connect to maybe 2 games and then I get kicked because my ping is insanely high. Is there an alternate port that I can use to connect to BF2 or something??

This probably isn't a port problem. Most likely the college just doesn't have a fast enough connection. You could ask IT people at your college to see for sure.

Are you trying to connect to favorite servers ? maybe because of your move they are not so close as before ?

Update the servers list , then sort by ping , then look for the lowest ( the top servers ) , you should be able to find <50 ping and most servers allow up to 150 ms .

Shut down any program that might use bandwidth including auto updates , and make sure both BF2.exe and PB ( update it ) are open with your firewall .

If you already done that then before starting BF2 go to RUN > CMD > type "netstat" , it should be empty of connections , if not someone/something is hogging your line .

    Hope it helps soldier .

most of the time i can't even login, and after 5 minutes if I can no servers show up at all when with the same settings if I were at home with my internet i would get like 800 servers.

The school is it's own ISP. We have a T3 connection. like i've downloaded a 20mb vid in like 30 seconds, so it's not a speed error.

the problem is most likely thier firewall. most colleges block gaming ports, so you will find it very hard to play games online. what you could do, ask the IT department if they can open ports for you, or ask them how you can play online games. (some may be helpful, some wont be, so keep trying)

yea, i figured I'd have to do that. A friend told me that after a few weeks we should be able to play anyways, but I wanna play like now while things are still easy.

if you have enough people, try to setup a LAN game. get a switch and have everyone connect to the same game.

i dont think we need a switch mainly because i can see other peoples' itunes **** so I assume we're all together so I should just search for a lan game every now and then

I’ve got the same problem… my ping is no stable at all (soon i get kicked) varying from 50 to 500.

I don’t think they gonna open the ports for me, especially because the issue is about gamming. I tried what Gilo says and it worked, my favorites are not “favorites” anymore, since I changed of city, but I'm still having connection problems in other places in the same city.

well the problem with being on the network will still remain the same, the ports are blocked. if you all connect into the switch, you bypass any and all firewalls from the school, and create your own setup.

true. the thing i want to accomplish is being able to play on a regular ranked server not on a lan party and so far I have yet to do that and it's irritating me cause i paid a lot of money for me laptop and the game + expansions and now I cant even login.

aside from everything we have stated previously, not much we can do..it has to do with the school's firewall and how they block the gaming ports.

Yeah, me too. And the worst thing is that right now I can’t afford to pay home connection, so the only place that I can play BF2 is at college.

Don't give up hope yet friend! This is going to sound strange and sorta stupid, but check in your in game options that the network is set for your appropraite internet (T1 or cable/dsl). I had the same problem the last time I tried to instal bf2, I would get pings of like 180 and get kicked. It turned out that for some insane reason this game causes your ping to go nuts if you don't have that option set correctly. All I did was switch the tab over to cable/dsl (I have dsl) and my pings dropped down to like 60. Its stupid, but it worked for me, so give it a try.

Ohh, sorry. Well, heh, then its gotta be your school blocking gaming ports as the others said.
