Hey guys, i just recently ordered a dell xps m1530 with the following specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 1.50GHZ
2GB PNY Ram
8400GS 128mb
120HD 5400
Windows Vista Home Premium GRRRRRRR![]()
I can run crysis on low settings, counter strike source on high settings, FSX on High Settings but for some reason i cannot start up. I dont know why, but it seems that i have more than the required hardware (maybe cpu or gc memory) but that doesnt disable it.
Anyone know what the problem is?
I have all the updated drivers and what not.
Thanks

There is a huge patch for BF2, the latest is 1.41. Have you installed that?

Is your refresh rate at 60Hz? I know if it's set at 59Hz or so, BF2 won't start at all.
-
I am downloading the patch right now, but what would the refresh rate have to do? Ill check mine, but what should it be set on then? -

Set it to 60 if it's not already there. If it is, then maybe it's the patch like Chaz was mentioning.
-
Ok, well it is set at 60herts, and i am downloading the patch right now, so ill get back asap.
Hopefully it will work, i mean cmon i can play crysis without any lagg at low settings and bugfield wont even start lol wtf xD -
-
Also, run it in XP SP2 compatibility mode.
-
i playu bf2 on my machine in sig,in vista, all settings maxed out and its smooth as a babys ass and plays like a dream ! -
Ok, so i got some updates. I have installed the patch 1.41 (latest). Tried it , still doesnt work. After i ran it in compatability mode xp sp2 and as administrator, still didnt work. I tried with reduced winodw, still doesnt work.
Im out of ideas, help anyone?
Could it be my processor which is a C2D 1.5GHZ ( i doubt since C2D came out after the BF2 game) therefore 1.7ghz before isnt 1.5 C2d now. -
I am running BF2 without any problem Look at my rig spec below. I did not encounter any problem at all. It run like a charm. Have not encounter any problem with it yet.
-
I think it is your refresh rate. I had the same problem, and I ran http://www.pagehosting.co.uk/rf/ and it started working perfectly.

KrieGLcok try this; Right click on the BF2 icon go to properties and under "Target" add this line "+menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1280 +szy 800" without the quotes so it looks something like this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1280 +szy 800
Now the custom resolution doesn't necessarily have to be 1280x800. Try different lower resolutions and see if the game will lunch. -
Keep trying, in a few reboots it will decide to run.
I don't know why, but I have the same problem as you. It can't be explained, just under vista (even with all the latest hotfixes), some times it wont run, some times it decides it will. -

BF2 has some bad coding in it. I think it really does have to have a processor running at the minimum speed it says it requires as it can't dual thread on a dual core, it's purely only a single core/threaded game. On my 1.8 GHz Turion, it loves to crash on servers when there is alot going on like artillery, vehicles exploding, what not. I only play on infantry only servers if I have to play on my notebook. My previous notebook, a Gateway MX7515 had a mobile Athlon 64 4000 and ATi X600 64 MB dedicated + 64 MB shared, graphically it's not as powerful as my current machine (probably because my HP has more video memory) but the game would never have what I call an "orchestration crash" where the CPU gets supposedly overloaded because the mobile Athlon 64 was and still is a beast. On a single core of a dual core Turion, or even a mobile C2D the game's max processing room is severly constrained because of the dual core design, and the game itself only single thread capable. It's a shame that DICE didn't patch the issue. Desktop dual cores are much higher clocked and much more powerful per clock cores in general than their mobile counterparts, so they don't have much of an issue. My Athlon X2 5600 on my desktop rips through BF2 and any other single thread game without remorse. But I just really hate that BF2 crashes so easily due to the clock speed issue, it doesn't even slow down the framerate or anything, "oh my theres not enough processing power to keep my framerate high" says the BF2 engine, "I think I'll just CRASH instead!"
BF2142 is the exact same way, but from experience it's much less inclined to just crash, but it will during graphically heavy and orchestrationally heavy firefights like BF2, it just seems to have more head room. -
uninstall ... then install it again?

Alright i got some more news. I tried adding +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1280 +szy 800 to the shortcut target, but that didnt work, i didnt do anything =[ .
I have tried using the refreshforce thingy, it didnt work because its not for vista. As i was messing around with my display thing, i saw that the Screen Refresh rate was 63mhz. Their is no possiblity to change that.
I dont know what to do. I mean cmon i can run CRYSIS on low without any lag and i cant even start battlefield 2 lol jesus what is this world coming tooo
Im gona call the dell hindous and ea games to see what their sorry buts have to say lol. -
-
in vista u can try right clickng the icon and run as admin...that solved all my problems i had
-
OLAAA! i had same problem as you when i got BF2. its not your system at all..its silly annoyances that screw everything up.
ok, you should try a few things:
install/ reinstall. but before you do that...try close a few unnecessary background progs if you have any.
your firewall and anti virus might have messed up a few things during initial install...try turn both off (cut your internet connection too) before install
most importantly for me though was DRIVERS. first i had latest ATI. it didnt work. then i got Omega drivers. it worked...but then CS:S wouldn't work...so i reverted back to ATI latest drivers and hey presto... everything works a charm...try Omega drivers and see how it goes....
im not that familiar with Nvidia so i cant really say what latest from omega are. but heres link to omega site
http://www.omegadrivers.net/
good luck...
ill try remember what else i did. -
Alright, i know whats not working, its the refresh drivers because i pluged my external flat panel monitor and it works with it on 70MHZ and it can be changed when it's plugged in, but when i unplug it it goes back to 63MHZ.
So i tried powerstrip but have no idea how it works.
Would anyone recomend a refresh rate editor?
Thanks -
Does running in XP2 Compatibility mode actually improve the gameplay?

Try deleting your Game Profile(s). In there, I think, contains files for your resolution, settings, and refresh rate that you can set in BF2.
-
-
Alright ill try deleting my profile, but it is set in the game for 70ghz so idk.
oh btw i bought 4gigs of corsaire ram -
i have exakt the same problem with my BF2 and XPS m1530
have also 63Hz screen -
Some people have reported that it works to edit the games .config files so that you change the default 60hz to whatever you machines refresh is and it works. I've also seen where that 'fix' did not work for them.
Your only choice really is to plug in an external monitor and play on it. I'm guessing your system is out of warranty? Some Dell users who got screens other than 60hz did have luck getting Dell to swap them out for 60hz screens. Might be a way to go if you can.
Best of luck! -
OMG i just got the same xps m1530 laptop 2.6ghz, 4gb, 250 gb.8600gt vista home premium...
and gues what excact same problem, with bfv , bf2, and even bf2142
... but FSX works on highest settings very well too!
any solutions yet??? -
ok i my friend have a PC which is quite stronger than my 5yrs old laptop and he cant play BF 2, he using v1.0. Here is details of my laptop :
CPU intel 2.8ghz
RAM 768gb
AGP ATi Radeon 9600 ( 64mb memory)
The rest i dont think it need to mentioned.
Well ill tell him try your idea ( refresh rate ). If it works ill tell you.
For my memory's shake, i hate to register for a reply, goddamn how many more password i need to remember *&^$
Excuse my 2nd language. -
here is the solution for the refresh rate.... I wrote it a long time ago:
60Hz Refresh Rate fix - for Battlefield notebook gamers -
Do the notepad stuff mentioned in gophns post, hes right.
-
Yeah after a while of tweaking the .conf file it works.
Let me see what mine was. I think i still have it. -
Copy and paste the code into the video.con file usually located in
C:\Program Files\Battlefield\Profiles\Default\video.con
Code:VideoSettings.setTerrainQuality 2 VideoSettings.setGeometryQuality 2 VideoSettings.setLightingQuality 2 VideoSettings.setDynamicLightingQuality 2 VideoSettings.setDynamicShadowsQuality 2 VideoSettings.setEffectsQuality 2 VideoSettings.setTextureQuality 2 VideoSettings.setTextureFilteringQuality 2 VideoSettings.setResolution 1024x768@63Hz VideoSettings.setAntialiasing Off VideoSettings.setViewDistanceScale 0.9 VideoSettings.setVideoOptionScheme 3
