    Hi!

I have started playing games 8 months ago, and I have experience with CS:S, HL2 :DM, DOD:S, RO.

Now, Battlefield 2 is tempting me, but I am not sure that my notebook can handle it, so I am hoping that a kind soul, that has tried BF2 on a similar or identical system, can answer my questions!

    Here are my specs:

    Dell Latitude D810
    Centrino 2.0 GHz
    ATI PCIe x600 - 128 MB
    1GB RAM
    7200 RPM HDD

    my questions:

    1) how well will my system run BF2? I would appreciate infos on resolutions/detail level/fps, if possible/available.

    2) will I be able to play on 64-slot servers? Will I have to lower the GFX settings a lot to do so?

    3) a bit OT... what am I supposed to buy? The expansion packs are confusing me... to play on-line, are they necessary?

    THX in advance!!!!

    =)

With some tweaking you should be able to get it to run. The expansion packs are not needed but you must download the latest upgrades as there were a lot of previous bugs.

    1. You be fine on medium-low settings.

If you get 2gigs of RAM you should be fine on all medium.

    2. Yes you should, more RAM helps.

    3. You dont need the expansions to play online just the latest game patch (1.4).

I played with my X700 on 1280*800 with lowish settings. I had some lag, but that is because I have 1 GB. FPS was around 45-50 all the time.

The X600 should play on 1024*768 with low settings. 2 GB would help indeed, but dont buy it if it is too expensive.

I have a similar system and I am able to play it on low-medium settings. I am sure if you tweeked it around a little bit you could play on medium-high settings. The only thing that I would recommend is that you upgrade your ram to 2GBs. BF2 is a ram hog. :p

I have 1GB of RAM and it does run fine although the loadup times are quite lengthy. Still I want to upgrade to 2GB sometime soon.

Shouldn't have any problem playing BattleField 2 on that machine with reasonable settings. 2GB of RAM is nice, but play a bit and see how it goes. Unless you game a lot or are a hardcore gamer, the upgrade to 2GB of memory may not be worth it for you.

Thx for all the advice so far, guys!

I checked the price of another gig of ram (KTD-INSP6000A/1G), and here in Italy it would cost me at least 200 euros.... Even though I COULD afford that, I'd rather spend that money on something else, if the improvement won't be that much. We'll see, hehe...

I believe that the x700 is much better than my x600, but hopefully I will nevertheless be able to enjoy some quality gaming before my next HW upgrade.

There's something I don't understand about BF2. I could buy this 45-euros "Deluxe" edition, that should have new weapons and vehicles because it also contains "Special Forces"... but let me get this straight... these weapons are available in multiplayer mode, on all servers, and ONLY if you own this "Special Forces" expansion?

Oh, one last thing... do you all usually play on 64 player servers? Are they really much more fun than smaller servers? And, plz forgive me if I repeat myself, does performance drop a lot?

    THX again, guys!

Well, yes the Deluxe edition, gives you the extra guns and I think its worth it.

Yes, you should be able to use them on all ranked servers.

Personally, unless its big map, I find 64 player servers too full, too much chaos, I prefer servers with 48 players to no less than about 24 players.

This is completely untrue. BF2 can run on low on shared x200 cards, let alone dedicated x600 ones. The X600 is by no means a top end card but there should be no reason why you shouldn't be able to run the game on reasonable settings.

Try turning resource heavy things like AA, Shadows etc off, and leave all word and model textures to medium - texture difference is huge between low and medium but not so hugely noticable between medium and high. Always try and have view distance on 100% - you'll be at a disadvantage otherwise.

I see no reason why the X600 shouldn't be able to run BF2 at 1024x768, all textures on medium, 100% view distance, and most likely leaving AA totally switched off and shadows either on low or switched off, depending on performance. Always aim for about 35fps at least while walking around, because it will dip alot in big firefights.

You can get your in game fps by typing renderer.drawfps1 in the bf2 console.

    Good luck. :)
