I recently got a Gateway NX860XL and I've been playing BF2 on it, which runs and looks fantastic on this laptop by the way, but I've been getting an annoying crackling noise in the sound. I have the latest BF2 patch and everything, so I guess it's an issue with the computer's audio playback, though it only happens in this game. I don't know much about built in notebook audio devices, but my control panel tells me that this thing has a Sigma tel audio device... anyone else have this laptop and know of any newer/better drivers to use?

A simple google search confirms that's it's indeed a driver problem. Make sure you have the newest BIOS and sound drivers from Gateway, and failing that I guess just do a google search for the name of your audio device.

Well, I got the latest bios from gateway, and apparently the sound drivers on their site are the same ones that came with the notebook. I checked sigma tel's website and they say that the only source for driver updates is the notebook manufacturer, so that leaves me with no options to fix the crackling sound. Anyone else have this particular notebook and have any experience running BF2?

Make sure to disable EAX in the Audio options.
