Besides, BF 2 is already old anyways...

What are the details? Is this really a version that runs natively in Mac OS X? How well does it run?

It's not an actual native OS X game in that it doesn't use OS X code. It uses Cider which means it's the Windows game wrapped in enough Window API files for it to think it's running in Windows. I don't think there's been actual reviews yet but previous Cider games have been decent considering what's going on. In theory a well optimized one should only have 5-10% performance difference between XP and OS X. Kind of like running in Vista. :D (Although Vista is getting a lot better with drivers).

The concern is whether EA will be as concerned about frequent patches to fix problems and improve performance. It would have been better if Aspyr did a real port for BF2142, and C&C 3 and HP OotP considering they did the previous games in those series.

Sadly you'll have to rebuy. The people at Demonoid have been releasing Cider ports of a bunch of games and I believe they have a guide on how to do it, but you don't get the same bug fixes or performance optimizations, plus it's probably less than legal, so not really recommended.

Really Cider ports may be better than no games, but with the performance hit and the availability of Boot Camp it hardly has the same buying factor. Granted native OS X ports are generally still slower than XP, but after patches they get very close if not on par, while Cider ports are forever limited.
