So I'm running BF3 at a mostly medium spec with high textures, however after playing for one hour or longer I feel that my performance takes a drop. After checking tempratures, I decreased my overclock from 800/950 to 770/950 and surprisingly it runs better, with a less drop in performance as time goes on.
Initial overclock temps were around 85-87 degress while now I'm hovering around 80.

I heard people get like 70 degrees maximum load temperature, how is that possibe? I'm on a brand new P170HM(3 weeks old) with MX-2 paste and a Zalman cooler. I'm considering repasting but I'm not that good with computers and I'm afraid I'll screw something up. Any tips?

Well if you're not comfortable repasting, find someone who is. Although the Clevo P170HM / Sager NP8170 is one of the easiest laptops to remove the heatsinks and repaste.

Does sound like a bad paste issue.

Just if you do it, make sure to clean it well with the highest concentration of alcohol you can find (99% can be found at drug stores usually) and soft paper towel. Get a non-conductive paste like IC Diamond to prevent possible shorting if any gets on your motherboard or CPU/GPU board.

    800/950 isn't a high overclock at all...

I typically run 825/1175 for gaming...it goes even higher when benching and my temps aren't as high as yours. Even at those OC'ed speeds, i never run over 72c. It is definitely a bad paste job.You might also consider a newer thermal paste like MX-4 which should knock a few degrees off your temps.

So can I do the repasting myself? Is it complicated, can alot of stuff go wrong?
Is there a guide around that I can maybe check out? I'd rather it be this forum then a google search, notebookreview has been helpful in the past.

    Sorry if this is off-topic.

Check out Chasity's pasting guide/info in the Asus section. She's probably the one I've seen the most involved with repasting on these boards. Although it may be aimed at G53/73 laptops, you may gain some insight and knowledge on how to apply it to your laptop properly :)

You can pick up an IC Diamond 24 Thermal Compound tube for 20$~ from ebay if I'm not mistaken. IC7 goes for around 10$. IC24 is what some resellers use, so I'd go for that.
