I just really really really really really really hope that they don't botch this. Battlefield 2 is one of my all time favorite games ever. Bad Company 2 is fun, but it just doesn't seem to capture that same feeling of teamwork and overall battle experience.

DICE has said they have a special and dedicated team working on the BF3 version of the game. So hopefully it will not disappoint. DICE employees have let out a few tidbits or clues on their Twitter's about BF3 but nothing concrete yet.

Seems like we will have to wait till GDC or that German magazine that's supposed to feature BF3 next month.

New engine means new problems but also great advances... I'm guessing once the bugs are sorted it'll be better than BF2 and won't disappoint. Unless they are doing it backwards and making the console version firstm then porting it to pc :|, which results in something like CoDBO (BUGS!).

I hope there is a commander mode like in BF2 and 2142. I also hope we get 64 player games back.

If this game doesn't have 64 OR MORE players I am going to be supremely annoyed. If they could do 64 players years ago in BF1942, why not now? Even with destruction it shouldn't be too bad given how powerful computers are these days. I would rather have more players and less destruction than only 32 players. Of course the problem with these multiplatform games is that (at least in the past) they have had essentially the same maps for PC and consoles, and it is very hard to have one map work for both 16 people and 64 people. COD4 had 50+ player limits, and then we had 52 people playing the tiny shipment map, which is cramped for 8 people. The map sizes in BC2 are pretty pathetic compared with BF2 and 2142 (1942 as well). Many of the maps in those games are just as long as the longest Rush mode maps, but much wider.

I also hope we get more team organization, and VOIP that people actually use. Some planes would be nice too, as well as PRONE FUNCTIONALITY!!!!! Seriously, if there is no prone in BF3 I am not buying it (ok, I probably still will since I have been waiting 3+ years for this game).

Game will apparently be running on Frostbite 2.0 vs 1.5 which is what BC2 runs on. I expect 2.0 to be pretty much an all new engine vs. 1.5 which was incremental from 1.0.

Let's hope they do a good job with it. Frostbite 1.5 already has excellent capabilities.

I am pretty excited for this, I never played BF2, but I am most certainly a shoe-in to buy after I spent a combined total of $35 for BC2 and Vietnam, really can't think of anything that has yielded me so much "bang-for-your-buck" out of any purchase I have ever made.

Any details on a release, or is it still too early in development to say?

You don't understand the problem. Computer speeds have been getting faster. A lot faster. And so, the engines are getting more complicated, including additional physics, and the result is that you need to keep all the clients in sync with a lot of additional information. But internet speeds have hardly changed. That's the problem. 64 players was reasonable when basically all you had to do was sync up everyone's location and orientation. There is so much more data that needs to be passed around in a game like BC2... We need faster internet to handle more players.

Not me, I refused to be extorted by EA for access to the BF3 BETA. No chance I was gonna pay $60 MoH, which sucked, just for BETA access.

ding ding ding! Exactly. That's me too. I almost bought MoH just for the beta, but glad I didn't. So stupid you have to buy one game to get into a beta.

I don't want them to take BFBC2 and improve upon it, I want them to take BF2 and BF2142 style gameplay and put it in a new game.

I would personally be totally okay if they kept everything the same from BF2 and simply updated the graphics. I mean, the vehicles worked perfectly (jets and helos especially), squad/teamplay was great, never used in-game VOIP but I think it worked, maps were fantastic and balanced, and overall the game is exactly what I want for BF3. I mean, can anyone name any improvements for BF2 they want to see in BF3?

I wouldn't be happy with an updated BF2. I want to see something new, some revolutionary in FPS gameplay while still featuring all the strong points of previous BF games.

Personally I want them to limit certain weapons to factions, go nuts with the amount of weapons even if stats are exactly the same for some of them, unlimited sprint, and spawn on any squad member. They're already adding destructible environments so everything else copied from BF2 is fine by me. Only after they deal with hit detection issues, would I want them to add new features because I don't think it'll matter much if you can't kill your opponents.

Well, I hope DICE has something up their sleeve that will blow everyone's mind away. Frostbite 2.0 is an all new engine so the possibilities are really endless. I guess it depends on how much time/work/effort DICE feels like putting into BF3. If successful, BF3 could be the defining FPS of the decade like Counter Strike was for the last.

I want realistic weapons per factions. Nothing experimental either, rather stuff that is in use TODAY or whatever will likely be in use when BF3 takes place.

I'd rather have fewer, more realistically and detailed modeled weaponry with unique stats than see a million different guns with mediocre differences. Quality over quantity, I tend to always say. However, DICE should still keep in balanced.

Unlimited sprint is a definite no-no, but I think they could work out something where depending on what you are carrying affects how long and fast you can run for.

BF3 needs the perfect mix of arcade/realism to succeed.

    Random thoughts:

    1. Add ability to change kits with the supply crates.
    2. Add an anti-air weapon like a shoulder mounted stinger, but I do like the tracer darts in BC2.
    3. There must be destructible environments. VOIP was good, but only worked for your team plus commander. Expand that to your whole team as well.
    4. I hope they don't take out the commander element though. Keep it in!
    5. Please keep a command wheel, and no dumb one button for everything like BC2 'Q' key.
    6. I like how medic and ammo packs work in BC2. Better than 'consuming' the pack.
    7. Hit detection. Hit detection. Hit detection. Get the basics right first, everything else is gravy.

I'm certain I've got more just first things that come to mind.

One thing I really hope they don't do is the customizable characters BS. If we end up having assault class running around with pink party hats, Harry Potter glasses, clown shoes and MC Hammer pants, i'm definitely going Milton Waddams on the DICE offices.

If they take the good from BF2, add in the good elements from BC2 (ht mentioned above), fix the damn hitbox and connection/PB issues, and have fully destructible environments it'll be awesome. By fully I mean, if you blow up a tank on the road, there better be a crater for the rest of the game.

Different guns for the armies would be more realistic but I bet people would complain either way - a real AK47 is quite a bit different from an M16, but you just know that if they gave russian armies ak's and USA m16's in game, they would be the exact same guns with different skins.

Yeah, you have to keep same weapons on both sides for balance. It'd be quite difficult to balance having different weapons on both sides.

I really liked in BC2: Vietnam how the tanks could actually run over anything. They can go up nearly any hill, over some porches on houses, that kinda thing..

I hope they keep this in BF3. Or make it better and have tanks be more realistic ---> can run over anything including through buildings.

Haha true, but I doubt Dice is stupid enough to do it. It only works for TF2 XD

I hope they take out too much customization completely. To be perfectly honest, I am starting to miss some of the faction specific weapons that used to be present in games, as long as overall factions are balanced of course. Think cod BO - everyone running around with bloody Ak-74, AUG, famas only.

Wow, if they're putting as much resources into BF3 as they say I wouldn't be surprised if they had a Fall 2011 launch. It's been well known that they have been working on BF3 for a very long time now.

    Here's how I see it:

    BF3 BETA: Summer 2011
    BF3 RELEASE: Winter 2011

    ***UPDATE***

Apparently DICE is planning something BIG with regards to BF3, tomorrow, Feb. 4. Perhaps a teaser of some sort?

I'm expecting the launch of the BF3 website along with a very brief teaser.

    Taken from enterbf3.com:

    UPDATE:
Take a look at this tweet:

    locust9 wrote:
You guys ready for tomorrow? You sure? Really really sure? #BF3

In an article posted today on DICE's Battlefield blog, they have made some surprising announcements. Most importantly, all development on other titles have stopped! The only game that DICE is working on is Battlefield 3. They state that they are out to make the best Battlefield game thus far.

    DICE wrote:
it’s time to look ahead to the next giant leap for DICE – the release of Battlefield 3, powered by the mighty Frostbite 2 engine. Our goal is crystal clear: we’re going to build the best Battlefield game ever, and we’ll do whatever it takes to make this the biggest launch in DICE’s history.

The last bit (italicized) is the most interesting. The biggest launch? Hopefully this doesn't mean that DICE will be launching Battlefield 3 during the holidays 2011, just to compete with Activision. A few months ago, EA said that the Battlefield 3 team was not being pressured to turn out the game to quickly, and to take their time. Hopefully DICE is still upholding this Battlefield 3 specific promise.

Some may wonder what titles were cancelled. Bad Company 2 Onslaught mode for the PC and BF1943 for the PC have been canned. Given the reason that the talented team at DICE has turned to make Battlefield 3.

The post was signed off with "watch this space for some exciting news I think you'll like." The DICE pressroom also has the same post:

    Edit:

I took the announcement the other way:

    "Let's just be friends"

That's exactly what I heard coming out of DICE's mouth to the PC community.

I'm a pessimist so I am setting myself up for BF3 being the biggest disappointment of the decade. We're getting a CoD console port...

Battlefield 3 will run on Frostbite 2.0 as opposed to 1.5 which is what Bad Company 2 runs on.

Some people are saying Frostbite 2.0 will be a incremental update from 1.5 while others suggest that Frostbite 2.0 will actually be Frostbite 2, as in a whole new version of the engine.

So performance estimates and system requirements are still up in the air really.
