Yeah, I also notice that. I first thought it's because of less explosions and etc, but when I have a tank and a chopper shooting at me and also having exploding grenades and vehicles, the FPS don't drop as much as in BC2. Perhaps it's not Frostbite 1.5 ( BC2 ), but 1.75? :D

believe it or not, the wide outdoor environments don't really push the polygon envelope, it was well done and has less polygons that need computational horsepower to build the scenes, so that's why it feels smooth, because your system has enough "horsepower" left over to calculate and then generate the outdoor scenes at high frame rates, but the moment you go into a cavern, especially on that map where the whole forest is just embers and burnt down, you will witness a substantial drop in the frame rates when you look around. It's because that cavern with the 2 mountain walls you walk through, takes a lot of polygons to build and then calculate on the fly. They need to refine that scene, by making it with less polygons and thereby making it less taxing on hardware. BTW it makes my GTX460m "hiccup", so a lesser GPU is guaranteed to witness this also.

Odd, in that cavern ( Hill 137 ), I have no drops or even looking at the burning mountain. Very odd.

    Haha ;)

I'm not sure though, I would need to check. But as you see in my sig, I can't :(

But I am pretty sure I had no FPS drops.

Anyways, let's stick to the point.

From what I asked to repi ( twitter name for a dev at DICE ), he said that the GDC slides about DX11 rendering and lighting techniques will be available tomorrow, so we can see if BF3 will be ground-breaking in terms of sys-specs :).

What do you guys think the system specs for BF3 will be? I'm estimating the minimum specs to be the recommended specs for BC2 and the recommended specs to be a bit higher.

Although I'm sure DICE will optimize BF3 so that it runs on the widest range of hardware since they are trying to market BF3 to the widest audience possible.

    Holy crap! No way lol.

    I'm guessing a little higher than Crysis 2's min specs. A 8800GTX, C2D 2.4ghz, 2GB RAM, Vista 32. Recommended : quad core 2.0GHz, GTX 460 or ATi 5850, 4GB RAM, Win 7-64.

From what I gather, Frostbite 2 is a totally new engine compared to 1.5. So it's not just an incremental update to 1.5.

I believe it is a big upgrade. I remember I saw a tweet from DICE that FB2 is a big upgrade and not a whole engine. NOT SURE THOUGH. I have asked Demize99 and Jasper on twitter about it. I will post the answer when I get one.

    Yep.
In 8 player games you can Rambo.
In 32 player games you can teamwork
In 256 player games you can never live to get to the other side of the map

^ Unless the map is big enough! Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising did 150-player, six hour long matches on HUGE maps many square km's in size. It worked reasonably well minus the super long travel times (no planes).

I think 150+ player matches CAN be done and can be FUN if the game is designed to do so. Just think of large-scale warfare, hundreds of players in battle around you. Some areas will have high intensity fighting, others low intensity, others none at all. Big maps with lots of players opens up so many opportunities.

Although I wish BF3 had more than just 64-player support, if DICE says it's good enough then I believe them.

Bach also said that it might not be fun because they have not correctly designed the game for it. There is still hope tho... Gimme gimme mod tools for big maps and 256 players :D

Also, MAG ( PS3 ) had 256 and it is awesome...

BTW, usapatriot, do you have Steam?

I hope select fire weapons are actually select fire in the game like in BF2. Meaning i can go from full auto/burst to semi. I cant stand how in fps games guns are always full auto. full auto is useless and does not benefit me and is a waste of ammo.

Joint Ops. I ***LOVED*** that game. The way a ground war battle game SHOULD be done. I loved the ability to be able to swim underwater and get in a knife fight with someone under water too. They had a huge number of verbal commands too. Some were just for fun but others were actually useful. The hovercraft that could transport vehicles. Simply incredible. I might have to install it just for fun again. Wonder if anyone still plays that game?

If you guys are interested, here are the GDC slides. Apparently, the system requirements will NOT be as high as we think, because they say they have optimized DX11 to have lots of quality, while not having "frame latency".

I think I installed it about a year ago just for kicks, there were still a few crowded servers but none of the 150-player variety. Novalogic was supposed to come out with a new game but I don't know what happened.

Are you talking about the gun having a switch, or the actual HUD element having a switch funcion, because there are several weapons in Black Ops like the famas that on the gun has a fire rate change but you cannot switch the rate. And not all guns in BC2 or BLOPS are fully auto, the M16 and several others. Its either one or the other most times, and guns that are bust, or single generally are more accurate then the full auto, but can be tough to pick up for newbs who are used to spraying bullets and having 4 hit out of the whole clip...

this whole thing about switching fire rate reminds me of Ghost Recon on Dreamcast. I hope they bring back single player games with depth like that. If BF3 single player implemented a squad system similar to that then it would give the multiplayer a run for it's money. Ghost Recon single player element of planning and controlling your team/squad was almost as if you were coordinating with real life people. You really felt like you were a team, even more so than BFBC2 or even Cod series multiplayer games.

Personally I think 1942 with Desert Combat mod was the best gameplay over all. BF2 just wasn't great the flying characteristics I just didn't like much and the maps were far to advanced, personally I like the basics.

I'll buy it either way just for fun.

we don't want the BFBC2 servers getting empty anytime soon. And at least that gives us a year when it's released to try and master BF3 before the end of the mayan calendar and end of the world.

Everything I've heard or read has been "before October 2011".

EA / DICE need a new cash cow. Running BFBC2 servers doesn't earn them money at this point. 99% of the people who are going to buy BFBC2 have already bought it.

Wow, what a crappy sniper. Hope that's not in the game because it seems it's just a way to show off the improved destruction.

First thing I do after loading BF3, when it's released, is disable bloom. It's like playing through the Fade in DAO.

And I just need to wait only a couple of months to play, unlike you all need to wait like 7-8 months :p

Also, I can see that, apart from amazing textures and models, the base core engine is still here, so the main reason why the specs will be up a bit is due to DX11, because shadows and shaders are almost the same.

I really hope this game turns out to be the next big thing. I will eventually need a replacement to Crysis Wars. But I'll need a game that exceeds it graphically and stylistically.

Well, DICE finally nailed what is important : MODELS AND TEXTURES. The texures and the models are amazing! They are just like real life. They focused more on those things, because it's the most important, unlike Crytek, with "fancy OMG sunshafts", that can be ignored, while high-red textures and models can't be.

    So yeah, BF3>Crysis 2 graphically.

Yeah but, Crysis Wars/Warhead>Crysis 2 graphically as well, and it's not all about the graphics, there is more to it. We won't know any of this until we see some reviews and try some demos etc.
