Hi guys. I know there are a lot of posts regarding battlefield 3, but I never actually saw any specific information regarding the fps that can be achieved with a single 6990m and 580m. I am choosing between the M17x and M18x. So, I was wondering what frame rates I would get with the single gpu configuration on 1080p high and ultra settings, all without AA. Also, is there a way of getting a 6990m crossfire on an M17x? Thanks a LOT. :)

    M17x R3 - crossfire is impossible.
    M17x R2 - crossfire possible.

To my knowledge no one has put out BF3 580m v 6990m info. On the whole, the 580m is 5% faster.

No it's not. The M17x R3 is a different machine, it's cheaper, and quieter with longer battery life. It competes better with Clevo, Asus and MSi now.

If you want the beast, they have the M18x.

I'm getting around 45-65 fps on Ultra textures, high rest of settings @ 1920x1080. No MSAA, No AA/AF. AO = SSAO

I feel I should be getting more but meh.

I'm getting ~ 40 fps on my 6990m with BF3 at 1080p, everything set to Ultra, HABO, 16xAF, and AA turn off.

Ask, and you shall receive. PC Perspective recently put out some benchmarks on this exact comparison.
Mobile GPU Comparison: GeForce GTX 580M and Radeon HD 6990M | PC Perspective

The nVidia GeForce GTX580M is slightly superior to the AMD Radeon 6990M in High detail levels, and significantly superior to the AMD Radeon 6990M at Ultra detail levels. Between the superior performance, nVidia Optimus implementation, and superior driver support, it should be a no-brainer to justify the higher costs of an nVidia GeForce GTX580M upgrade for an Alienware M17x.

But the 6990M beat the 580M in almost every other test....

    Doesn't matter.

Both GPUs run BF3 fine and you don't need Ultra since the Ultra features just make it seem you are playing a game where someone is recording it with a really lousy camera.

Unless you all have really terrible eye sight. I do not have lens flare, bloom, motion blur, blurring, with my eyes. All that PP stuff DICE has gone overboard with is just annoying. I wish I could find a way to turn some of them off completely.

So basically, the performance boost you're paying for is now actually worth the money. Go with the 580M, OP.

It's more about the features, thankfully nVidia now actually competes with more features without excessive pricing.

Performance is not much of a boost at all, if you were already considering an HD6990m. But this is good because it means that AMD's strategy worked and now we have competitive prices.

It's $330 difference between the 6990m and 580m on the Malibal Satori... good to hear it's working on the m17x... but doesn't quite seem worth it elsewhere.

    Clevo 151HM (6990) is about $800 cheaper than a comparatively equipped Alienware M17x (580)

580M in my opinion. I've read about so many people having driver/graphical issues with their 6990M, which is one of the reasons I'd never get an ATI card. It just 'seems' to me that their cards are more "prone" to issues than nvidia cards, and even if this isn't true, it seems to me that Nvidia is faster at fixing these issues.

Could just be my imagination, but I'd rather spend some extra cash on something that works rather than getting good value and having headaches trying to fix issues. Just my opinion.

580m is now worth it, given the recent price cut. But beware, you may have some throttling, its infamous with nvidia cards.

What drivers are you using? When I put my settings at yours I get like 20ish FPS.

Indeed. I barely get 60 FPS with medium settings and no AA/AF.

Really who cares with this Nvidia vs AMD arguement.

I have a HD5870M and playing BF3 with 40 FPS+ with Ultra textures, rest high, with 8x AF and FXAA High and SSAO on. Motion blur off.

A 580M and HD6990M should be able to achieve 50-60 FPS with the same settings I'm using which are pretty much optimal for this game.

I get 45-60 fps with Ultra textures, rest high, 0x AF, no Vsync, no Motion Blur, no MSAA/AF/ etc. SSAO On @ 1080p.

The most frequent fps drops i get is during tank vs tank battle or when engineers are shooting rockets at tanks (drops to 35-40). I think playing @ 40 fps is unplayable, so I really wish there was something else I could tweak to get the higher fps without sacrificing graphics.

So none of the actual mobile graphic devices can play bf3 (ultra details and 1980x1020 resolution) with more than 60-70 fps? 0_0 not even 2 amd radeon 6990m crossfire? thank your for your answers.

I think you're asking alot from mobile cards. Remember that the 6990m is based off a down clocked 6870. 715 core vs 900 core. The 6870 is a mid-range desktop card. My 6990's don't drop below 40 fps in BF3 on Ultra AA included.
My desktop has 2gb 560ti's in sli and those barely manage 60+ fps on ultra.

With better drivers I think we will see better performance from AMD cards and hopefully dual 6990's will be able to pull off closer to 50+ fps on ultra.

For BF3 it won't matter. I think all the Ultra post-processing makes it more difficult to spot enemies. All you need is Ultra textures, rest on low. That's not just me, talked to some who have much better hardware than I agreeing.

Agreed. I remember in Battlefield 2 that everyone purposely turned off grass and some other things not because their computers can't run it with them on well, but because it was hindering their vision on the enemy. :p
