I know there is a huge thread regarding this video card but I want to go into the specific.
I want this thread to talk about Battlefield 3 and the 6990 because this is the game that everyone is measuring to.
With that said I did some further research and if I am correct, the 6990m desktop equivalent is the 6870 and the 580m desktop equivalent is the GTX 560ti and according to this site GeForce GTX 560 Ti vs Radeon HD 6870 – Performance Comparison Benchmarks @ Hardware Compare, the 560ti is still better?
Anyone can confirm this site is accurate? Now what baffle me is that the only two game that have been benchmark show that the 485m is still better than the 580m, even though this is a very small sample.
Will this wait for the 6990m (if same price or $25 dollar more) be worth it for BF3 setting, whereas the few fps can help me the notebook run on a better high setting or if the 485m are capable of that, then that slight increase in fps can make it wrong a low setting on Ultra.
I know this is all specification or maybe their is already benchmark but love to everyone input as well as resellers input to see if maybe this wait might be worth it for BF3 since it the game that I am basing my purchasing decision on.
Thanks

The 560ti IS stronger than the HD6870 in the desktop world. The reason why they tout the HD6990m to be stronger is because the GTX580m is severely downlocked compared to the 560ti, and the HD6990 is not as downclocked as the HD6870m.
I think the GTX580m is around 35% less clocks than 560ti, whereas the HD6990 is like 20% less, so that makes all the difference. -

good choice if u need more fps just overclock.
-
joking of course.
I'll be fine, I mean if I can run Metro 2033 on Ultra with 485m then I'll be happy with whatever graphic BF3 give me.
While were at it, I take it my desktop HD 5850 still trump any laptop graphic card at this point, I take it? -
your 5850 should be faster than 485m but not by 2 much.
and no chance of running metro 2033 smoothly on ultra. my friends desktop gtx580 cant even because the engine is just not very optimized. -
Battlefield 3 will be optimized to run on desktop 400 series for nvidia. Because those were mainly what were out during the main production of this game so anything above that is more than enough. It would be stupid (and quite impossible) for EA/Dice to build the game around cards that did not even exist. So once again if you have a card thats better or is a high end 400 series card you will have no problem running this game on really high if not the top settings
Ps: anyone who tries to say they ran it with a 580 gtx and didnt even go on ultra dont bother replying to this because no crap it didnt run on ultra, its not a completely optimized game for the 500 series or really any card at this point because its in an early stage. -

maybe not on tessellation heavy stuff. -

How did they do it then? Did they create a GPU for it and not tell us? -

crysis looks better than crysis 2 at some parts. but thats probably i played crysis 2 before there was dx11 patch.
im certain that my 2 year old 5870 is faster than 580m because i scored 3fps more on heaven 2.1 and nvidia dominates tessellation. in actual games i would be a good 10-20% faster. -
I was talking about desktop 400 series not laptop and it's honestly common sense, they are not making this game for only hardcore gamers who have 5000 dollars to spend they are making it with what they had at the time because how could you make something for something that is not in existence what tools did they use to do this? Like I stated earlier its common sense that it will be optimized with what they had to work with at the time of making this game and they said that the computer to run this at max has yet to be made it obviously an over exaggeration, dont take everything so literal. Dice/EA just have not completed the game thus not properly optimizing it to run as it should with what they have at their disposal. Just watch once its released the high end desktop 400 series cards and 500 series cards will run this game at max with the proper cpu ram etc.

what people are asking you is that why you claim that the game will be better optimized for NVIDIA hardware.
-
oh sorry I wasnt trying to say they would be better with nvidia or not i just dont know much about ati and what their nvidia equivalents are, I thought I did mention that the 400 and 500 and their ait equivalents would but i mustve forgot to put that.

they fully intend to support AMD/ATI, along with eyeinfinity and perhaps even hd3d..
Sneak peek at EA's Battlefield 3 powered by AMD Radeon at E3 2011‏ - YouTube
BFBC2 was actually an ATi partner game and ran best on ati cards when it came out but obviously since these games have such a wide appeal and a wide consumer base, they(the developers) will never make the mistake of siding with one company, they will always assure it runs equally on both company's cards of equivalent power..
Edit: btw here's a video of a m18x rocking a pair of 6990m's if anyone cares to see it .. they don't show any benchmarks though

there been alot of cases where games sporting the NVIDIA logo runs better on ati cards. so dont make a big deal of these things.
Battlefield 3 and 6990m!
