Hello
I have read about GPUs and regarding over and underclocking. It seems quite interesting. I'm still getting used to the terminology and how modules work with each other....
I downoladed the FreeEdition 3DMark05 and ran a test...
No tweaks were made, what so ever, everything in default settings. I still have to get used with features and settings...
I checked the Result Details and it scored a 2421.
Game tests 2421
GT1 10.2fps
GT2 7fps
GT3 12.7fps
CPU Tests
Test1 1.9fps
Test2 3.3fps
Feature Tests and Batch Size tests were not available.
Are the marks normal for an Intel P M 2.13Ghz with 1GB Ram and ATI X700 128MB. The HD is a 5400rpm.
Any comments? What can I do to improve the system...
-
I think that look likes a normal score for an X700 based laptop.
As for improving score, you can try using the latest cataylst drivers, or the latest modded drivers (Omega). Or just try overclocking. -
I was searching for other results and comparing fps for the 3 Game Test, seems to be very low...
Why is that? -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
3DMark is designed to stress even the highest-end video cards, so it is normal that the framerate is very low. Your score is good for a 128MB X700 - updating your drivers will help as sionyboy posted.
The last two tests run exceptionally slow because the CPU is doing the work there and not the GPU. The CPU tests in 3DMark05 are 100% useless and mean nothing anyway, because a processor wouldn't be subject to doing anything like that in real life. -
Ohh ic...this is very interesting....
do you recommend to download and upgrade to 3DMark06 instead of 05? Is there any differernce...? If so, in what way?
I saw results achieving 17, 10 and 19 fps in the game tests respectively...why is that gap between my results?
Thanks a lot? -
your score is normal for a x700. it is in par with my go6600 which gets around 2500 3dmarks in 3dmark05
so yes you score is normal...
also try updating your drivers.............it helps alot
(on my laptop the defualt drivers were very buggy, giving me a 2700 3dmark05 score....and very bad performance in games.....so i updated to the 2nd to latest drivers for my card......and though my 3dmark05 score is not so impressive.......the gamming performance is!!!!!) -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
There's a gap in the framerates because some of the games are more demanding than others. -
there's quite some gap...
Regarding drivers...do you recommend to download them from the brand's name manufacturer site of my graphic card or is there a particular one?
thanks for the comment! -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
I recommend getting the Omega ATI drives from www.omegadrivers.net. They are excellent. Be sure to uninstall your old ones first via the Control Panel.
-
Ok, it makes sense...
thanks -
Thanks Chaz MAn...
I will take a look at it...
hope I will not screw everything, cause it will be going the first time to update graphic card drivers....and I think I'mnot good at it...
-
and btw, are those game test mentioned and used in 3DMark05, real PC games??
or just used to test graphic cards? -
no because they are more like "Stress" testers
yes, because they use current game engines and stuff (rendering tequniques and other stuff) -
Is the driver Radeon Omega Drivers 3.8.252 (Catalyst 6.5) siutable for my ATI X700?
-
yep they are1!1
-
ok....they seem very advanturous ;P
-
is there any particular site regarding how to install video graphic card drivers correctly on Xp OS?

Hey likair,
Go to www.omegadrivers.net and select the Omega 6.5 drivers. You can see a bar there, click for XP. Thats all you need to do. I must say you have a great notebook, the new driver will hopefully be a good boost.

I would recommend getting the latest drivers from your manufacturer, as they are most compatible with your machine. Other drivers, like the Omega ones, might cause some compatibility issues with your computer (for example, not downclocking itself properly in batter saving mode, which happened in my case when I used Omega Drivers).
However, feel free to try out a few drivers. Worst thing that can happen is that your monitor won't start up and you will need to plug in an external one to do a driver rollback. -
Thanks Budding for the comment...
Actually I downloaded Omega 3.8.252 Radeon Driver, but still not installed...
Do you have any suggestions for any particular ATI drivers, that will work for my system...?
I have read something about all this but still it's not my forte
Thanks for your help -
You could download the latest ATI Mobility Catalyst Drivers from the ATI website, but do note that their Catalyst Control Center is uber resource hog, and it is strongly suggested to disable it from startup etc.
But ATI Tray Tools are good, and give you quite a lot of options (not as much as Omega drivers, but some of the options on the Omega Drivers caused my laptop to crash), although I believe those have to be downloaded seperately. -
Hello Hitman
yes actually I downloaded Radeon Omega Drivers 3.8.252 (Catalyst 6.5) but still not installed...I'm not very keen to install graphic drivers...this is going to be my first grpahic updateHope I will not screw it up....
Hehehe thanks for the nice comment reg. my system. I'm very happy with it!!!!
Cheers
-
yepp I heard about ATI Catalyst Driver that its a resource hog.... so I was more interested in the Omega 3.8.252 Radeon Driver...
Still abit confused what to install...
I just want good drivers that dont cause my system to crash and boost it up! ;D
Undecided... -

likair, I merged your two threads into one so you can find all your information easier.

Thanks ChazMan421

wooohhh
I have just downloaded the 3DMark06 and saw the Demo preview. I noticed that it ran very slugish and slow on the system compared with the 3DMark05. I also noticed that the contrast in colours are more vivid and bright than in 3DMark05...
I still have to do the test...
is this normal? -
Yes, very normal.
-
For reference my 3dmark05 score is in my sig
For me, overclocking the memory made the most difference -
ohh that s a great difference...
mine with 3Dmark05 scored 2421.
guess with 3Dmark06 is much lower and sluggish...still have to do it...
can you expalin whats' the meaning of the last 2 numbers "256mb ATI x700 GPU @ 370core/380mem"
Do you think if I update the current drivers to Omega drivers will improve the system? instread of overclocking? -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
Don't overclock unless you have to; the X700 at default speeds is fast enough for any game right now.
Chaz -
Both those numbers can be overclocked. I'd recommend overclocking. Just be careful! If you do it properly nothing should go wrong. Just up the clock and memory speeds by 10mhz at a time and then run 3dmark05. As soon as you start seeing artifacts, its time to turn things down a bit. Also overclocking makes a much bigger difference than drivers. The default drivers for most cards are not too bad. You might see an increase of 100pts in 3dmark05 with newer drivers though. You can download ATI tools and try some overclocking.
-
ok ChazMan421
From where do you actually identify the video card's processor and the memory's running frequency?
Is this ATI TOOL version a recent one?? ATI Tray Tools 1.0.5.880
or do you recommend another one? -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
Do you have ATI Tray Tools installed likair? If so, post what your core and memory frequencies are here and we can figure out what kind of memory your X700 has.
-
no i dont have ATI TRAY Tools..
Is this version a recent one? Shoul I work with it?
ATI Tray Tools 1.0.5.880 -
Here's the info
Clock Information
BIOS VPU 345.00
Current VPU 344.25
BIOS MEM 331.00
Current MEM 330.75 -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
Your memory is running at 331MHz - you have GDDR2 memory in your X700. Different memory types run at different speeds, so that is how to tell.
-
Thanks chazman
Now I'm grasping a little bit all this stuff...
I have installed ATI Tray tools...
What I did was that I disabled it to load automatically when windows start. This is to load it my self when ever i want instead loading when windox starts. After I disable it and tried to load ATI Tool manually the system freezed!!
Restarted and when loadin, windows showed me that there was an error, checking all the system folders...
Should ATI TOOLS load automatically when windows starts?
and Whats the difference between ATI Tray Tools and ATI Control Panel?
Thanks alot... -
You dont want it to load when windows starts on a laptop. Laptops can greatly change their clock frequencies and if ATI tool is telling it to do one thing and its startup tells it to do something different, theres frequent crashing involved.
When loading an overclocking program make sure your cards powerplay is disabled first. It can cause conflicts just like the one you're having. -
thanks vamp...
Ohhh I had the PowerPlay Enabled...no I disabled it...guess it was the reason for the system crash.... shewwwwwww
I didn't overclocked nothing...and I'm not gonna...I'm just checking how all this works...
What is exactly powerplay used for?.... -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
PowerPlay is ATI's power saving technology. It reduces the voltages and clockspeeds of the ATI video card when on battery, works quite well.
-
ok, so powerplay should be disabled when loading ATI Tray TOOLs?
thanks alot! -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
You can leave it enabled. I do not have any problems and have had ATI Tray Tools installed for months.
-
strange casue when I had it enable, and manually load the ATI Tray Tools the system crashed.
I tried to disable it and load it again and it worked perfectly....
Another question...how would you know the defualt (company setting) for the GPU and Mem frequency clock...?
-
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
The default clocks vary across manufacturers, so I can't say.
-
My powerplay usually stays on too. I just make sure its in full power when I turn an overclock program.
-
so why did my system crash with powerplay enabled? It was set to Max
I did not overclock and when launching the ATI Tray Tools the system crashes...
Any ideas? -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
Let ATI Tray Tools autostart with Windows. I have always had problems trying to start it manually.
Bench Results...
